Angry Eyes (Loggins and Messina Cover)

Cover of Loggins and Messina's 1972 hit Angry Eyes Written by Jim Messina and Kenny Loggins.   Performed by Robby Robbins(The Band19) and Markno999.   Originally 7:40 in length and somewhat of a "jam" we reduced the song to just over 5 minutes to keep the song more listenable.   Robby did all vocals, saxes, organ, marimba, and Mbira.  Markno999 did guitars, xylophone, bass, and drums - also did the mix with a little help from Danny Danzi.   All the good parts of the mix are Danny’s, any mixing problems are mine

This song has a lot of moving parts so may have some mix updates based on comments.   For those not familiar with the original, or Loggins and Messina, it starts out a bit Country Rock and then goes into a jazz rock jam format with several solos before going back to the country rock vocal style.   Comments welcome on any aspect of the song.    Thx.

http://www.soundclick.com...ngid=12590553&q=hi

For those interested the guitars are played through a Line 6 HD500, Bass is Trillian, Drums are Superior Drummer, Percussion is EZDrummer Latin Percussion, Organ is an NI Organ from Komplete 8, Horns are JABB except for the Sax Solo which is Mr. Sax T. Marimba and Xylophone are recorded from a Yamaha Motif Rack-ES.  A number of Waves plugins are used throughout including Kramer Tape and SSL Bus Compressor and SSL Channel.  Also using some ProChannel EQ.

:-) It rocks HARD! And we started working on it "in the spring" LOL! I can't believe Mark hung in there this long with me and I'm really pleased with the final result. It was an "extremely aggressive undertaking..." The saxes were the most fun to do, and the Hammond (for me)

And I think Mark just nailed the mix, and the percussion and drums. It really glues it all together (it goes without saying that he kicks arse on the guitar)

Tim - Thanks for the listen and comment.   Glad to hear a long-time fan of them approves;)  I like all their stuff quite a bit, as solo artists or together.

Frank - Thanks, appreciate your comment.   This was quite a beast but a lot of fun to work on.

theguitarplayer (John) - Thanks for the comments and listen.   Appreciate the comment.

Janet - Thanks, it definitely was a ton of work, seems like it took forever but glad to have spent the time on it.  Learned a lot of new mixing techniques on this one so well worth it.

Rimshot - That is too cool, playing on Messina's album.   Must have been a really awesome experience.   He seems like a nice guy from the interviews I have seen him in, super humble.   Very rare in the music biz;)

Leadfoot - appreciate the listen and comment.   Means a lot, the production quality is why I'm here, to learn and grow as a mixer and producer.   I have learned so much on this forum and appreciate it very much.

I am heading out on a business trip today so will have to leave comments in the capable hands of Robby.  Thanks everyone for the comments thus far.

Great job Mark. I know how much time you put into this one. I like yours better than the original sonically. It's also really scary how you did all the orchestration and instrumentation on this. I remember listening to this when we first started discussing it and shook my head when I listened to the detail. You really put in the work brother, I just barely coached you and showed you what I might do differently. But out of the box this mix was quite good as far as I was concerned. Great job Mark....you get better with every mix man. Be safe on your business trip. :)

I've been away for awhile and...Jeesh! The talent in this forum just keeps getting better and better!

Does not sound like a home studio recording at all. Sounds like a professional multi million dollar studio recording.

Brought me back to memories of L&M, Poco, Pure Prairie Leaque...

Awesome job! That took a lot of work.

An ambitious undertaking for sure. I do remember hearing the original “back then” but I haven’t heard it since. Cool tune - sounds more like “Stills and Mark” to me. I think Robbie’s voice has an edge that works better than the L&M version (their vocals always seemed a bit sugary to me). There’s so much going on throughout this that it kind of overwhelms me as “rock tune” (I know, there’s that jazz/jam thing going on as well). The guitar playing is killer - well, actually, all the playing is at a pro level as far as I can tell - that’s  to say “great job” to the both of you.  If you’re taking requests, how about Dirty Work by Steely Dan?  Oh, you’re not taking requests. OK, never mind. Again, very impressive track.

Ha! I'm just happy to be able to collaborate with someone as talented as Mr. No999. He's really a nice guy too, I have a lot of respect for him. And I help balance him out by being a dirtbag? It's the Ying and the Yang? Or in our case, he's the Wing and I'm? Well... You know.

I'm glad people dig it, I wish someone would love on me for my saxes? Or that sweet Hammond... Come on people? I'm more than just a singer? :-) It's like that chick with the hot rack? (she plays pool and can arrange the balls correctly before the break, i.e., "hot rack...") But she also has a nice personality? But people only focus on her "ability to arrange the balls correctly before the break?" I'm that girl damit! Pay attention to my personality and not my hot rack!

I mean, I am biased? Because I contributed? And in fact? It was my song!! :-)

But people, we need to stop and appreciate Mr. No999's talent and ability, both as a performer? And as an engineer... Mark knocked this MF'er out of the park!

He is the man? As an Engineer? And as a performer :-)

And it is my distinct pleasure, "and honor" to be able to collaborate with him... I think the man deserves a high five, really. There are a few people I look up to, and he's one of them.

I received some spam in my inbox with a link pointing to this song. This is the best tasting spam I have ever encountered. The work that went into this is real evident. You guys covered this extremely well and beyond. Great work by all involved. Thanks for the spam, Robby!

Thanks John, I love the music from this era, I guess it's just what was big when I was at a certain age, but I think a lot has been lost musically from these days to modern music :-( But i'm sure guys my age back then were complaining that it wasn't as good as Glenn Miller :-D
