Alex, I need to put XP on an old computer. All my old Adobe & some music stuff won't run on newer stuff. You keep up w/ that windows info - can I still download the updates until April? I've got the disk. @

I'm running Photoshop CS2 on Win8. I'd be surprised if your Adobe stuff wont work. If you have issues with installing please Google for workarounds.... If you are running Windows Pro you 'should' be able to use your old apps in compatibility mode or even in native mode.
I think updates will stop being made in April but I'm not sure when they cut off the delivery service.
Cheers...

I agree with Alex. Don't give up before you start. See if they will run on Windows 8 first.

Guys, several of the music programs just won't work. Such as the programming for my Ensoniq Fizmo. As far as Adobe - it wants to see windows internet explorer 4 before it installs. The computer is an old Vista. @

It is true, there is a lot of XP 32 bit software that will not run on Windows 7 64. I have Ultimate and Pro and tried both, and tried the compatibility mode , read everything I could on line at each software forum etc. Nothing below Wave lab 7 runs, so I had to pay to upgrade. Nero 6.6 the same story. Easy solution is keep an old beater P4 running and use it when needed. I have enough spare parts to run Window Xp for another 10 years and that's my plan. Just because they say they are dropping support means zilch really. All that security hype. Baloney, stay away from ****-y web sites. Better yet unplug it from the net.

my opinion about plug ins that wont run on newer OS and only run on older OS like XP. think about the quality of the plug in. its 10 years old probably, am I right ? there is a lot happened in 10 years. quality, cpu usage. a long list. what im trying to say is their are better plug ins out there.

Also XP if I recall correctly supported 16 bit program as well as 16 bit dll libraries. That ended with Vista.

Kenny, may I bestow "my favorite post of the week" honor upon you on a Monday. I'm 52, don't have a smart phone and I have one computer on 8.1. My elderly, elderly spouse has a laptop on frikkin' Vista (which he won't let me change) and a desktop on 7 that he hates (huh???). I think you should give me your Mac and both our lives will be much simpler.

I can boot to it whenever I need an XP-supported program, and as an added benefit I can access any of the files I might need on the XP partition while using the Win8 DAW partition.

Better yet, you could probably run Windows XP in a Windows Virtual PC as a guest Virtual PC on your Windows 8 PC... http://www.microsoft.com/...d/details.aspx?id=3702 Correction: In Windows 8, you now can enable Hyper-V which replaces Windows Virtual PC, however this does not support Windows XP Mode, however if you are running Windows 7, you should still be able to run Windows Virtual PC and host a Windows XP guest... http://windows.microsoft.com/en-au/windows-8/hyper-v-run-virtual-machines

But can you access and transfer files, like VSTs, between the host OS and the virtual engine?

I haven't tried it, however if you can create a share on your Hosting PC so that the Guest PC can access then you should be able to scan the VST folders - though nothing stops you from installing the VSTs in your guest XP Machine...

I should have been more clear, the "beater" is a laptop... I'm typing on it right now.. I use it for the internet. I also use it as a back up live playback machine for my solo gigs. I'm 300 Kilometers from home today. I also have a couple of very small workstation IBM think something P4's that are the size of a old school CD player. There is no monitor and they will just sit there unplugged until a situation arises where I need one. My wife's Dentist office just upgraded so they were tossing them out. The new workstations are the size of a ATA DVD drive. Same thing at the hospital where I work. IT said they are scappinh 12,000 XP P4 computers and installing these new W7's. They are so small the common call he gets is staff can't find them to re-boot!

Hyper-V not great performance from my experience. You wouldn't want to run Sonar on it. XP dual boot better idea. Swings and roundabouts though as virtualization is better at sandboxing XP which will soon be prone to zero day vulnerabilities.

Windows 8 does not support Virtual PC although Windows 7 does. I use VirtualBox in Windows 8.1 to run Linux applications and they perform quite well. I installed Windows 7 in VirtualBox and it also ran quite well, although it clearly was a bit slow, though not bad. I never tried XP, but it would probably run a lot faster in VirtualBox on a newer machine than natively on a older one. It's free and easy to set up, so you could try it out easily. I set up a shared virtual folder so I can send and receive files from my host to Linux and back.

That's interesting. I haven't tried using virtualization, I've just been assuming that XP installed on a partition would be faster and more trouble-free than using a virtual engine. I'll have to look into this... maybe it could free up a partition/disk space.

It's fine for Linux, office work, virtual servers etc. Anything like games, DAW's that require realtime screen or sound updating... Naa forget it. Performance sucks even with high spec machines. 50% worse at least. Go multiboot.

Installed VirtualBox as no Hyper-V for me (grr, I have the normal windows version that came bundled with the notebook and recline PC, they use standard version of windows, hyper-v comes with windows pro)... Installed a copy of XP in a virtual PC and works just fine! Actually it runs super fast.... Haven't used XP for so long, forgot how damn good it is/was (seriously)..
