I have enough seriousness in my life already, I come here FOR the light banter and word-play (and to read UBubba's absurdities of course!).  Sometimes, despite my frivolous intentions, I end up learning something anyway.

I must also add that I just don't get people who come down here from the forums that should be focused on the topic they were created for and feel that this forum should be serious and topic-oriented as well.  It was created as a refuge away from all that!  It's like someone going to a nightclub and not understanding why everyone is dancing or why the music can't be quieter and in the background.  Obviously it's not an environment that was made for them so they should go off and find a more suitable place to hang out.

Steve Strummer:
And just look how we repay them.

We showed that we could be 'trusted' for a couple of days and now look at the place again - thread after thread after thread of complete and utter tripe. Doesn't anyone ever get bored with the 'slightly altered' thread title thing.

Doesn't anybody get even a little bothered by the "few posters ruining the CH for everyone else" comment we received upstairs?

It made me feel incredibly thoughtless and selfish.

It's going to end up with just three or four of us in here doing the same 'jokes' over and over to each other. If anyone posts something remotely interesting it disappears off the page in just a few hours, submerged under a boring repetitive deluge of Am's and Ya's.

Sorry for that, but this place just doesn't seem to have the spirit and the sense of genuine fun it used to. I'm a big part of the problem I admit, but doesn't anybody else think it's just getting too over the top in here?

Even birds don't crap in their own nest.

Nicely said Steve; and isn't that pretty close to what John said a few days ago? and we all know how John's thread was received.

It seems we all could be a little more receptive to other people's views, ideas and opinions. (something which, at times, is quite lacking around here.)

There are thousands of Cakewalk forum members and it's sad to know how small a percentage actually post at all. Why is that? Are they intimidated? Do they feel not part of the group?

Any forum is better served with a large number of participants, rather than a small group dominating the threads. In order to get more people to post you need an audience that is receptive to new people and more importantly new ideas and thoughts.
I would love to see a coffee house where at any given time we could talk about politics, religion, whatever, without fighting, name calling and threats.

Unfortunately, that is a pipe-dream Tom.  Having been on other forums which specifically have subforums for both politics and religion, I can tell you that what you're suggesting isn't possible.  If you think people get opinionated and defensive about their music creation gear, it's NOTHING compared to what happens when you tear apart their religious fantasies or political idiocies (derogatory adjectives used intentionally for effect  ).

Beagle

as far as inane post counts and yada yada, and Am and +ya.  who cares?
Judging by what others have said upstairs (and not just John), quite a few folk Reece.

As I said yesterday, when I read (sorry I don't have a link to it) that: "a small group of posters were spoiling it for everyone else" I felt quite selfish and thoughtless. Guilty as charged m'lud.

I don't want to make anyone feel unwelcome here, and if I've been contributing to the (often constant drivel), the proliferation of slightly edited thread titles, and all the other in 'jokes' in doing that, then I think I need to change my behaviour. If nobody else wants to change, that's cool with me too. But that's how I feel.

That's not to say I'm not going to be inane, or post daft stuff, but honestly, doesn't 'Am' this and 'Ya' that get just a little tedious after a while? And it must appear totally incomprehensible and very cliquey to anybody stumbling in for the first time.

As I say, and I want to be clear - I'm cool with whatever anybody posts, and I certainly wouldn't dream of telling anybody what they should or shouldn't post. That's nobody's job but Cakewalk's. But sometimes I think we just maybe need to step back and see the bigger picture.

Edit - spelling

If I knew how to quote more than one at a time this would be a very big post...

The biggest attraction to this forum for me is the different thoughts that others have.
It's fantastic reading different points of view from the folks that post. There are very
many amazing personalities here IMO.
I may not understand their sense of humour sometimes or exactly where they are coming
from but it sure gives me something to think about and I can say I've been enlightened
many times.

Ones that have been here for some time know that every time somebody has a meltdown
we go into check mode. Trying to make sure that we are the thoughtful caring people we
are and want to continue to be. You're there with the finest of them Steve.

The difference is that the Wright brothers were dealing with a physical science issue, not one of the "human nature" variety.

I do not think that politics or religion could be discussed rationally amongst all members without a little bit of frisson.

There have been some rather enlightening threads about some topics pretty close to that that actually did not implode but that was more of a reflection on who was in those threads...rational people.

But I figure that one could still have good solid topics with attached silliness and still get something out of them...

Competitive post count padding has got old

I think it should be called The Neighborhood Pub rather than The Coffee House. Coffee houses aren't what they used to be. Most are not social gathering places, they are places where people sit alone reading the newspaper or a paperback. A few old-style coffee shops still exist, but they are withering in the shadow of Starbucks.

Pubs, OTOH, have never gone out of fashion nor been replaced by some characterless chain franchise. They are always tailored to their own clientele. They are places with well-respected rules, but not too many. Nobody gets censored for saying "suspicious" in a pub.

I meet my wife in a pub, it's still our favorite place to meet up with friends to have a drink, a bite to eat, and some great conversation.  Good idea.

Anyways, wouldn't the Coffee Hose Band rather play in a pub than a Starbucks?  I know I would.

Steve is not alone in his sentiment. I'm not exactly sure what I want the CH to be, but I've gotten to the point where I know what I don't want it to be. I'm also tired of the same joke over and over and over again. I like my humor to be somewhat original. Alot of the stuff in here has become trite and inane and frankly just tedious. It's gotten to the point that becan, or post count, or Am, etc enters what seems like every thread. It was amusing once, but not anymore IMO.

This place is full of intelligent, talented, well traveled and experienced people and most of them have an excellent sense of humor.

We can do better.

You-we-us, make the coffee house something different all the time. It was the bacon forum for quite a while. That's ok, bacon is a common. How many attitudes can you derive from bacon? We've seen a few. I'm a ham man myself but I won't go overboard with that preference. This sub-forum is a symptom of what goes on "upstairs" in the technical forums where not many are really technical but want technical answers. Some people bring their symptom to the CH and expect a technical answer, but all we've got for them is humorous banter. That's all we should have. If you're going to get pissed at being made to examine your problems, you shouldn't come here, because, we are not your support group, we are your community, your adversaries, your freinds, your unknown group of enthusiats engaged in the same art. We are not your dumping place.

Why has this place suddenly gone so serious? If I want serious crap there's always the X1 forum.

Do I really have to take my trousers off and run round the coffee house with my underpants on my head or will it get back to normal soon without that?

On the plus side, I always thought this was quite a cliquey place but was pleasantly surprised when I did start posting here. There's far worse forums on the web than here, although most of the ones I belonged to have been shut down.

That ain't too bright an outlook for here is it?

Speaking of ham, my wife bought one on sale at Target and stuck in the fridge for me to nibble on while she's gone. Brilliant idea.

How do you say ham with an Australian accent? Hawm?

British? Hom?

Transylvania? Vlam?

Hmm... Another place for serious discussion and depressed attitudes?  Yeah, that'll fly.

Guess I'll have to find yet another place that allows you to be free in your boxers.  I already do too much of the other - maybe if I had a job where thinking wasn't such a large part of the work?  That's like leaving an 9-hour nightmare wedding gig only to be asked to play Brown Eyed Girl when you get home.
