Malibu.. ok back on topic.. the instruments, well some you can get elsewhere in other forms, the one that comes straight to mind is the mellotron.. as for the bass and guitar, depends on their forms.. loops or single sounds, with the various strumming , gliss etc.. how many sample libraries have carried that off successfully? might be handy for reference just get a real guitar or bass player in and use it for reference until the song is near complete. pretty much how I feel about strings, yep I'd like to use real players on what I do.. but you can get some good effects by layering sounds and trying to make them sounds more human.

Yeah! I like them very very much! Since I´ve heard them 1st time around 1974 (I was just 3 yr old). Being one of bigger Beatles collectors in my place (more then 700 CDs, near 500 Vinyls, lot of books, all Monthly books, original German Hofner bass, Epiphone Casino (sunburst), Gretsch Country, Gibson J160 (i´m looking for Rickenbacker 360 yet heheheh).........It would be very hard to think I would not going to buy this pearl......EW FAB FOUR. It arrived 3 days ago and I just can´t wait to test it. Best regards. Marcio (Stu) Porto Alegre - Brazil

I love the Beatles, this looks/sounds really cool. Can't afford it right now though. I was just listening to Revolver for the past few days on the car stereo (driving to work and back), got hooked on it all over again

Hi: I've had my eyes on "Fab Four" for a while now, and even more so since soundsonline discounted it half off. Just wondered if there are any current users of the product using the Play 2 engine (this thread is aging), and whether they would still recommend it based on the strengths of the guitar samples? I personally loved the sound of the demos, but have also seen the product reviewed negatively in other forums. Some folks attacked the value/quality of the guitars and the stability of the Play engine. Anyone out there currently using it on Sonar 64-bit and the Play engine, and have an up to date recommendation? I'm inclined to get it since it is on sale, but am wary of other forum reviews using words like "unusable". Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Still gets slated on a regular basis for the bugginess but the sound demos are the sounds you get and they sound good. I've looked into this myself quite a few times and they had a sale during namm and now 50% off. It appears to be buggy with no appetite to update. Reminds me of another company????? If you've got a good PC and a good wind behind you then you'll probably be ok. It's not easy to find out the exact problems as people are quite general in their opinion. 'It's buggy' - yeah but how? why? where? when? The play engine probably seemed a great idea in someones head and then on paper. Then someone made it and turned out it wasn't that great after all. I'll keep me ear to the ground for any play engine comments but there's more than a few cheesed off with the old play engine.

I love that band! Wish I had the vocals to make my own projects sound that good. I'm aware of two other overtly beatle-obsessed groups, The Red Button, and the Sponge Tones. The later in particular were great song writers. Worth seeking if unfamiliar.

Marah Mag Thanks AT. BTW, the Fab Four product page led me to Ken Scott's web site and some really good interviews with him. http://www.komosproductions.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=16&Itemid=33 An excerpt from a 2004 Mix Online interview: Can you describe your methodology when you mixed a track in analog? The way I worked for many years was to do a short section at a time. For instance, I'd get the intro right and then go onto the first verse, get that section right, splice it onto the intro and move on to the next section. I used to piece everything together like that and it enabled me to make some drastic changes between sections. This process evolved from the Bowie sessions. Up to that point, there'd be the producer, myself, a second and quite often an artist, and if we needed to make changes, there would be hands everywhere on the console as we'd go through an entire mix. When it came to mixing Ziggy Stardust and Hunky Dory, it was just me, and quite often there wasn't even a second. The only way I could do what I wanted was to do it in sections. The knack was having it so the edit didn't sound like an edit. You had to have the very beginning there, and there had to be enough “hang-over†from the section before to make it sound right so it would all fit together. I would mark everything on the desk and then change it to the way I wanted it to sound. Then I would go back and put it where it had been and quickly I did it — bits and pieces. I still think that my best work was done that way. These days, with computerized boards — and not necessarily going on to analog — I don't like it as much. Speaking of Ken Scott - I'm really looking forward to the new "Epik Drums - A Ken Scott Collection" that Sonic Reality are working on, the videos they have on their site with Ken Scott and others involved, including the likes of Bob Siebenberg, Billy Cobham, Rod Morgenstein, and others, are pretty interesting. Links to the videos: Sonic Reality - "Epik Drums - A Ken Scott Collection" It's a huge library by the sounds of it, but will certainly be an interesting one.

jackn2mpu Is this with the Play engine or still the Kontakt Player? I parted ways with buying any new stuff from EW and soundsonline because of the Play engine, which if memory serves uses a dongle, which I ain't nuts about. I'd post over on the forums, but Doug Rogers banned me for criticizing some aspects of their marketing (I kept it civil, no foul language). The Rickenbacker is a 12 string guitar, not a bass (although I did see a 12 string bass which had the 4 regular strings tripled like a 12 string guitar would have the normal 6 strings doubled at a Guitar Center a couple of years back. It was an OLD bass). Alembic did make an 8 string bass (4 strings doubled in octaves) - had one and it disappeared sometimes years back in the 70's. Ditto on "hate those dongles" Love the beatles. Grew up with them, Jimi, Cream, Mike Bloomfield, Buffalo Springfield, etc, etc. What a great way to grow up :-)

That 12 really thundered.

Susan G FloridaMusicCo has it for $355.00. That's the lowest I've seen. I'm watching the 3rd video now. Talk about memories (and yes, I'm old enough! ) I hate the idea of a dongle too but since I already have to put up with the stupid iLok for my waves plugins I guess the Beatles sound is worth trying out. I just purchased it from Sweetwater for $197.50. That's the best price I've seen anywhere, even with the academic discounts. I had to look at it several times to make sure that there wasn't some gotcha that I was missing. EDIT: I just got a call from Sweetwater because the sales rep wanted to make sure that I understood that the software required an iLok to operate. I mentioned how ridiculously low the price was compared to everywhere else and he said it is a special promotion price that is good only through May 31.

papa2005 Cosmic Bob, Is material from the two groups you mentioned available on CD or for download? Hi Papa: Both groups are available commercially both ways. Both seem to emulate the earlier Beatles sound. The Sponge Tones' record "Beat and Torn," sounds like a lost record from 1964. Worth a listen if you see it!

$197.50 is the 50% discount that a few are doing. I think I'm sold. Even if I don't use it often, it looks like a great toy. ...Sounds like the most common concern for using Play 2 is the need for a ton of memory, but that it does more or less work. Incidentally, I asked the East-West Forum users for a similar recommendation on my concern about the Play engine, but my question didn't make it past the"moderator!" Surprising.

From reading this thread, I have done some searching and found that Digital Village are currently selling the Fab Four VST in the UK at £140, which is an incredible price, I am suddenly very tempted but have read also in the thread that there are concerns about the Play engine, can anyone expand a little as to what these concerns may be?

Marah Mag:
<snip>At first I thought I'd try to find some good string samples. I think I might've briefly tried the Garritan stuff that came with Dimension LE, just because I had it. But I realized that I wasn't really looking for a "good string sound." What I wanted was not "strings" so much as something that evoked strings, or that said "strings," ... ...I ended up inserting the TTS-1 and using a patch (under Preset, Ensemble) called 60's Strings, I played the parts with the right articulation, adding octaves and harmony as needed, and processing it so that it sounded bad enough to sound good in the mix and function as I wanted. Totally fake. When it goes by, I think it sounds about right and does what I want. </snip> I think you hit the money on the head (pardon the mixed metaphor). Many times I find the better sampled stuff is less than optimal and find myself returning to something that's not so realistic sounding because it just sounds right. But I think you put it best when you said (paraphrasing) that it's about getting something to "evoke" the instrument rather than be exactly like instrument itself. Nice writeup on the sound of The Beatles by the way. My family "Abbey Road" shot (a few miles from where I grew up)

back on track I purchased the fab four from audiomidi for 197 and downloaded the latest play engine and insert it first.. I did freeze its instance and it works swimmingly on a core 2 duo with 4 gig and xp pro 32 BIT .. it loads quickly versus Sampletank (forever to load) and some NI stuff (almost as bad as ST) I initally purchased the Fab Four as an alternative to NI abbey road 60 drums.. OK not a fair comparison, layers et all, but Im grooving on the 60s bass guitar (with the IK SVT ampeg B15 plug) and the Fab four guitars which in certain circumstances g\fit quite nice I have NOT had a crash with Fab Four but have with other VSTIs who will remain nameless

Since they've updated Play to Play 2, the EWQL libraries have been running great in Sonar 8.5 for me, in both the x32 and x64 versions. I don't own FabFour (yet), but I do own a number of their other libraries. Before Play 2, Fast Bounces and Freezes were not reliable in Sonar. Many times you would get dropped notes and were forced to do real-time bounces, which were not always successful either. Now, with the new Play 2 engine, Fast Bounces and Freezes work like a charm. (i.e. I haven't had one fail yet.) This is a huge boost in my workflow. I always found the quality of their virtual instruments worth the extra effort to make it work, but now that it's fixed, it's a joy to work with.
