Yeah, I saw that at NAMM (online). I'm surprised it will ever show up. I thought that now Akai and Alesis being in partnership, the stuff they bring out at NAMM is just teaser material which never actually goes in to production. Anyone know if the MPC5000 will ever be released?

Well, that's encouraging. Let us know if you actually get it and if it works (again, I'm thinking Alesis build quality here). It looks like the best pad controller on the market once it actually shows up in stores.

There are some people over at Abe's forums that have already received them. I have tracking numbers for mine. It should be here on Monday. Teusday would be the latest.

Here is a list of it's features:

MIDI synced note-repeat with MPC swing
16 full-sized, genuine MPC pads with velocity and pressure-sensitive response
Assignable switches, sliders and endless knobs for a total of 72 controllers
    2 assignable Foot Switch inputs
1 assignable Foot Pedal controller input
    Large, easy-to-read custom LCD display
30 user-definable Presets for various DAW and software applications
    MMC/MIDI Start/Stop transport buttons

As far as what it has that the 24 doesn't, it has tap tempo and note repeat. It has 8 faders instead of six. It has it's own midi clock.

I'm sure you have some basis for this comment but I'm curious. I have various bits of Alesis gear (HD24, QS8, AI4...) and they've all served me well for many years without problem. Is there something I should know?

From what I've read online from the people that actually are in possesion of one, it's very well built and very solid.

It also looks like the 8 sliders are arranged in 3 banks each for a total of 24 different controls, whereas the MPD24's 6 sliders do not have any additional selectable banks. Also, Akai stresses that the MPD32 has "genuine" MPC pads, whereas the MPD24 has "MPC-style" pads - that's a fairly big difference if you've ever compared the genuine MPC pads to the MPD24's.

I have an MPD24 and the quality is pretty good for a $200 unit, but I've been contemplating selling it since I rarely use it anymore. I primarily use Sonar 7 nowadays and the new step sequencer has made my MPD24 pretty much obsolete for my workflow. But it's still a nice tool to have for those projects I start in Project5.

It certainly looks to be the best out there.

[Pad Bank] and [Control Bank] suggest 64 pads, 24 knobs and 24 faders? That would be awesome.

Props to Akai for really taking over a market they inspired in the first place!

Same here. The only thing that failed on an ancient MIDIFEX was the membrane switches. They needed a little contact cleaner. There's a Micro Enhancer that's performs the same as the day I got it (new). When a pitch wheel spring broke on the Ion, I placed a call, and immediately got in touch with a live person. The turnaround time (there & back up the East coast of the US) was exactly one week. Standard shipping. It came back completely cleaned, tweaked, and refurbished.

Now I'm working on a ControlPad for well over a year now. My drum sticks are quite a bit heavier than the norm.
Those build-quality rumors are a leftover legacy from the days when Alesis was just beginning to break into the worldwide market.

The MPD32 and Live's Drum Racks is a monster combo. Lately I don't even boot up Battery3. I can access the sounds because Battery's sound library is all .wav. I just drag the samples into Live's drum rack and use Live's effects. All the drums sounds I need (Battery's 12 gig drum library) without Native Instruments occasional vst instabilities. Not a bad deal at all.

That Battery library alone is worth the cost in my opinion.

Busy with headaches. I couldn't get it to work. Through trial and error I finally figured out the problem. Akai's drivers do not play well with Novation's. The MPD will work fine as long as I have my Remote SL off. The minute I turn it on, the Akai won't work, only the Remote. Funny thing is, the Akai plays well with my Trigger Finger and Motif mlan midi drivers. The Remote plays well with them too, but they don't play well with each other. The Remote wins everytime.

Oh well, I'll be on the phone with tech support tommorrow.

Now that's a buzz-kill. And conflict with the Novation too. Why couldn't it have been the Trigger Finger?

Sorry about the issues. That is a buzz-kill.

Sounds like Akai and Novation somehow use the same driver? Strange.

I got it. I guess that's what happens when you install too many new software drivers at the same time

Automap 2.0 was just released a few days before I got the MPD. The new automap drivers allows the Remote to actually "high jack" other midi ports so that you can actually control two completely different pieces of software at the same time. I haven't figured out how to do that yet, but I have found the page that tells you what ports the Remote is sort of stealing.

You would think that the default setting for that would be off, wouldn't you????

Actually the MPD can do the same thing with it's drivers/software (called Vyzex), but the default is set to off.

Everything fine now. The Remote's transports and faders work, and so does the MPD's, and Automap still works fine.
