Took the survey and expressed interest in most of the tutorials however didn't see any products that I would purchase in the proposed list. I do appreciate being part of the market research though! Evidently Cake understands that listening to the voice of the customer is what drives a successful business which translates into profitability, which finances improved resources, that create better products, etc.

bramwell Andrew Rossa [Cakewalk ] Thanks to all who answered the survey...much appreciated!! We try to offer as much free content as we can but we also have opportunities to partner up with other vendors and offer paid content, so we are trying to see what everyone wants us to focus on moving forward. The results so far have been extremely helpful! Well, I would have taken it, but I can't get Cakewalk to add me to their email list. I have contacted customer support many, many times. Have written to various people and can't get them to add me even though I have been a customer since Pro Audio 7. bramwell, you just may be the longest lasting forum member i have seen,2003?,thats cool man, only 22 posts? hey, have you checked your spam filter? i know i sound corney, but it could be getting caught in the spam filter man? hope it all gets worked out :)

creynolds It was a "How can we make you pay for more stuff?" survey. Ugly. Yep. The machine behind this is going so fast behind the scenes now, it's impossible to stop, survey or no survey. I got to hand it to them, they certainly have balls asking people if they mind if they charge them for presets and FX chains. What's next, a nickel to Cake every time you click the 'Save' button? Oh wait, can't do that anymore, they removed the frickin' 'Save' button! Ey yi yi.

But I think the survey was only sent to users who purchased recently. By the way, bub, I ran into some financial issues, so I haven't bought any ProChannel modules released after the Expander/Gate, so they don't have me hook, line, and sinker. :P

I'm not interested in buying presets for PC and I stated that in the survey. but just to mention to Bub and those of you who think it's appalling that cake has brought up the notion of paying for presets - this is not a "revelation" from cake. Toontrack successfully sells presets to their Superior line. $15 each and there's about 20 of them. they also sell presets for the EZMix line at $49 a pop. apparently this is a thriving business decision for them. I don't know if any other company has followed this route or not, but I just wanted to point out that it's not a new concept.

I never get asked either ! Given that I have a Cakewalk account, a forum account, and have pretty much bought every upgrade / offering for at least 4 years, I wonder how many other customers get ignored too ! (Yes, I do check my junk mail folders too from time to time and especially when I hear about these questionaires from Cakewalk) Not much more I can do from my end to rectify this problem. Oh well...

Would it better if they just put them in there and charged you even if you don't use them? They already do charge for presets. Anything that comes with Sonar has it's price built in to the cost of the program. And what's funny is, even if I did want to use them, which I don't, when I installed X1D, it removed all the presets in the PC. So maybe you are on to something there, maybe going forward you'll just get a blank PC and if you want to use it, you'll have to buy a preset. Music to me is more personal than just loading a preset someone else tells me I should like. No two tracks are ever going to require the same thing, so personally speaking, I see absolutely no benefit. homasabarnes I didn't get the last 2 surveys. I hope things turn around soon. @Beagle: It's one thing to sell a preset for a complex drum program, it's another to sell presets to the Pro Channel which is an intentionally 'whittled' down version of more in depth VST's. Thanks for letting me know about Toontracks though. I've never heard of anyone trying to sell presets before. Bub.

creynolds But dont taint the replies by asking closed questions Interesting. Most pollsters feel that closed questions are the way to go to avoid tainting the results. The more you let a respondendt go off on his own path, the more impossible the task of determining which answers are similar. Also, it is a fact that closed question surveys are completed at a higher rate than those with open questions. I find it curious that someone who isn't going to utlize the results of a survey, knows better than the people who are requesting the information and ultimately using it, what form of questioning should have been used. Just Saying.

Thanks for letting me know about Toontracks though. I've never heard of anyone trying to sell presets before. Bub. Third parties have been making money off of presets/patch libraries forever - every single expansion for a synth is just a preset pack. You may see it as different, thinking that a "sound designer" has to do more work in a synth than an "engineer" does when creating FX presets but ultimately it's the same thing. For all we know, half the synth presets could be randomly generated and just named a cool sounding name and sold as a unique patch same could be said about FX presets. Ultimately I'm more in line with your style of usage more than the that of the pro preset crowd, but I have no problems with companies offering them as I'm sure some find them useful if even as starter points for further manipulation, or some like seeing how so and so well known engineer/producer utilizes certain tools or techniques. No skin off my back, no money from my wallet - if I don't want it I don't buy it, but my usage is not relative to others methods. I guess it's all in how you view it.

Thanks for letting me know about Toontracks though. I've never heard of anyone trying to sell presets before. Bub. but actually the Toontrack Superior presets are basically the same thing that cake is proposing for PC presets. When they first came out, I was given a free one as an "inticement". all they are is a set of presets for different compressors, limiters, transient shapers and EQ (which the FX themselves are already included with Superior). so for example you pick that you want your drums to sound like "X" as defined by Mitch Allen. you choose that preset from your menu in Superior and it will add EQ, Transient shapers, compressors, etc to those kit pieces with the preset settings on those FX set up for you. so, from what I gather, it would be the same thing for PC presets. you choose a "sound" you want and the preset loads up the modules with presets of the settings already in place, just like the presets which are downloadable from cakes' site now, except those are free and the proposal is that cake would have "canned" presets - maybe from famous producers - for a particular sound for pay. sounds like the exact same thing to me.

Bub. but actually the Toontrack Superior presets are basically the same thing that cake is proposing for PC presets. Sounds nice. Hope they do well with it. I'm not advocating it, just explaining how I think it's the same thing as what Toontrack is doing. just my opinion, I'm not trying to argue with you about it. Didn't think you were. Sorry if I came off that way. I do hope they do well with it so they can further develop Sonar so we can do more recording and less patching.
