Applying delay to small section, and making delay tails continue in the background?

I want to add a delay effect to one just one part of a vocal clip, and have that delay's feedback continue on in the background while the other parts of the vocal clips start playing.

For example, take the following line from twinkle twinkle little star:

Twinkle twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are

I want to add delay to just the word "star" so that the delayed"star star star star..." plays in the background while the song contiues, WITHOUT the delay effect applying to the rest if the "how I wonder what you are". So basically, everything would be dry except the word "star", whose delay tails continue in the background of the rest of the dry signal.

I've tried automating the on/off switch of delay effects. But if I turn off the delay effect after the word I want to be delayed, obviously the delayed sounds are stopped as well although I want them to continue.

Any ideas?

split the word 'star', move it to another track and use the delay effect in that track's FX bin.
Is that too convoluted? There's probably an easier way

Have you tried splitting the clip either side of the section you want affecting and  inserting the fx into the clip itself?

Then in Preferences -> Audio -> 'Playback and recording' check the box marked 'Play Effect Tails after stopping'

Alternatively, put that one section on its own track, with its own fx. It might be easier if you want to do several bits with the same effect.

^ This is why I love Sonars clip effects! I do so many little effects I couldn't imagine having them all on seperate tracks!

    The way I've done this:
-Automate a send from your vocal track (prefader) that goes to a dedicated delay bus.
-Set the send to nothing and automate the increase in send volume only for the words you you want the delay to effect.

This way you don't increase your track and FX count.

Can you elaborate a little more on this? How do you automate a send from an audio track to a bus?

EFX sends will automate. In the old days you just cranked the efx send at that moment in time then turned it back down, the signal would feed the delay and continue to be heard until it either stopped looping or you shut down the efx return. Sonar works the same way if you are using your efxs in busses and you can automate this.

Yes but how do you automate the send? I am looking at my audio track, and I do not see any option to automate a send to any of my busses

In the track view: Create a Buss. Right click the audio track to insert a send to the buss you created. Click the drop down menu next to  the box that reads" Clips" in your audio track. Select automation and choose what you want from the options listed.

This similar subject recently came up in another post - while not exactly the same requirement it was a useful tip that I've since used.

    Check it out here: http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2518679
