eph221 There are different levels of musicianship. Cave men banged bark, was the cave man a musician? Is ozzy osbourne a musician?

Exactly. Of course, one could append any number of appropriate epithets to the term - good/bad, pro/amateur etc. What might actually prove more taxing might be to try and accurately define "music".

Ozzy "wrote" the melodies to much of the material he sang. I keep seeing some of his ex-collaborators (rightfully frustrated over royalties) dismissing his creative input. As someone who has written a gazillion "instrumental" songs and unfinished projects for lack of a vocal line, I believe that coming up with a good, catchy/memorable melody is not that easy. Anybody who think they can dismiss Osbourne's entire catalog with Black Sabbath and as a solo artist is a joker. I get the impression that Ozzy is a lot smarter than he likes to show... Because, yes he IS a clown. But I have a feeling that there's a lot more to the man than that persona.

batsbrew singers are the first musicians.
In the early church, only vocal music was considered appropriate for performance in a religious setting. Instrumental music was considered profane.

Agreed. But some folks here would rather be rude and not get the joke in reverse! Sadly, they are just being defensive about the songs they like, and that has specifically NOTHING to do with music, or people's opinions of said subject!

And that's practically all I listen to these days - a bunch of albums by Harry Christophers and the Sixteen in particular, sacred music for choir. Such as - Perfect background music to read a book, too. The exact opposite of Wagner. :P

Hi, Wagner is OK under the right circumstances ... his music, without the singing is OK ... check out how Werner Herzog uses Wagner in "Nosferatu" and it comes off quite alright ... and different, but I can not get into any of his operas and find them rather ... boring.

Everyone misunderstands Nietzsche! It was OUR god that died, the one we created. He never said God or gods don't exist. He wasn't an atheist in the truest sense. He had a deep-seeded ambivalence to them.

+1 Without stepping too far into religion here.... I by accident studied this back in my college days (I liked a girl taking a German lit class...So.... ). According to scholars, the 'God is Dead' statement was meant by Nietzsche to be ironic..a paradox in that Gods by their nature -indeed by definition - are immortal. Nietzsche was talking about men and Mankind - the human condition. I never got the girl, but some of that German literature makes you think. Especially the stuff written just after WWI. Heavy.

Ray Thomas? Played the flute too. Usually wrote a couple of songs per album, generally the (most) soppy ones, although I did like 'Dear Diary'. My sister had one of his solo albums, it was like aural marzipan.
