James - ****ing awesome. sent goosebumps down my neck, you know i love you and Tim working together anyway, but this piece portends something more serious, more profound than the AS stuff, which, whilst fantastic, was in that folk/whimsy genre...please please more, more proggy, more dark...

Ah, thanks Mark

I have a few more pieces under way for this project, and hoping to rope Tim in on some of them..keep a look out.

James this is really nice and atmospheric. Would love to hear a bit more space in the guitar and vocals, but you might lose that up close and personal vibe...so that's subjective...but this was a joy to listen to. Sounds like you have your partner in crime for life. Great voice that guy has. Really nice guitar tone too and good synth sound selections. Well done brother!

-Danny

Thanks Danny! That's really kind of you my friend.

Tim and I have been working on music together on and off since 1979, so I think we're stuck with each other now

James, Tim

This is hauntingly beautiful, and very atmospheric.

And very evocative, the mood is much in keeping with SMB's All The King's Men and the truly wonderful My Brave Boy.

I could listen to this sort of stuff all day long.

WOW!
Love. . . the flow/structure/arrangement of this piece.  Your synth pad choice really fills the low end warmth next to the sound of the acoustic (nice).  Love the cello only adds depth to the low end registration.
Tim, whats not to like about that wonderful voice.  He has a great storytellers voice, if you know what I'm saying.  From the arrangement and the effects used on Tim's vocals, I'm getting a bit of a Peter Gabriel vibe.
If I had to nit about the mix it would have to be the fast/short delay used on Tim's vocal.  The rest of the arrangement has that long verb and IMO it would be nice to hear a slower/longer delay/verb, but still a bit faster then the rest of the arrangement.  WONDERFUL . . .  looking forward to hearing the finished piece.

Beautiful. It was captivating from the beginning. Most of the prior posters have already put into words my thoughts (i.e. movie scene a la Gladiator, Braveheart). I really like the ethereal synth with the dripping water (reminded me a bit of Xanadu by Rush), but Danny nailed it that the acoustic tone is great too.

Would you mind sharing your acoustic setup? Sounds great!

Thanks for sharing.

Kev, you're right - 'great storyteller's voice' - that's bang on. I get what you're saying on the delay, I'll try a longer one. Glad you liked the pad, took a while to find one that fitted the piece and complimented the acoustic. Thanks so much!

Great compliments Thomas, thank you very much.

OK, the acoustic..Tim plays a beautiful 'Torridge' model by Brook, they're fine luthiers in Devon, England.

http://www.brookguitars.com/

I used 3 blended tracks for the solo acoustic;

1. Two small diaphram condensers pointed approx at the 12th fret and about 3'' back from the soundhole
2. A large diaphragm condenser behind Tim to get some room
3. A DI from the pickup

The guitar under the vocal was recorded with the voice, so I had no control over that.

ARG!!!!

I wanted MOOOORE!!!!

that was incredible James & Tim!  fantastic!

I think you should develop it more and the next "part" should be the start of the bloody battle with a heavy groove, faster tempo as the battle ensues with crescendo to the end!!!

more, please!

A really nice song...almost feels as if you are the soldier. Are the lyrics figurative here?

I could hear another thought coming across at the same tempo but maybe slightly louder and maybe up a half interval. ...Just me...I hear some weird things sometimes lol.

Thanks! It's based on a chapter from a book, there will be more pieces in the project.

Really well done from top to bottom.  Amazed by the orchestration, esp. coming at it the way you did (guitar first, everything else later).

+1 on all the evocative notes early.  And brilliantly captured.  Great sound w/o getting busy at all.

It is indeed subjective, but that was exactly what I was thinking. You have a great minimalist feel for music that I only wish I could emulate.

Thanks very much J.A.  I actually really like working that way, teasing out counter melodies and adding textures to a lone instrument. Fascinating where it takes you.

... Always anticipate the legend-minstrel ... and his ponderings.

... Unfortunately, there is some raspy guitar interference with the vox in the last 30 seconds I'm afraid ... so that I can't make out a few heavy words.  Also, the song begs for more, IMHO.

... Fortunately, due to the astonishing vox weightiness, this is my fav song of yours to date: Original, oriental, viking, old Brit-country ballad, elemental dance, artsy, pragmatic, etc., etc. ... that compliments and bursts above your old instrumentals ... many notches.

What an offering!
