...just different views, mudgel.... ...anyway, it's not necessarily a question of "bad experience".... ...I just pointed out that those systems do NOT bring ANY good, in the end, but only nuisances (which they do, indeed...) to paying customers... even taking some of them away, after all.... ...by the way... I also hate "challenge/response" authorizations, for similar annoying reasons.... ...Instead, I honestly believe that Cakewalk is the right, fairest authorization system example out there..... Until next time, Steve (GothicAngel)

...just few, fast additional lines for a sudden, terrifying thought: ...we are talking about music software here... ...but the copy protection question is basically the same for any sort of software.... ...thus, for the same principles... ...what if ALL software houses, EACH and EVERY one (..!), would adopt (different...!) dongles for their products...!!!??? ...can you figure your computer fulfilled with a (potentially) infinite number of keys....!!! ...that would be madness... a NIGHTMARE.........!

OK, point taken Mudgel. I still hate those damn dongles. If it prevents software theft, I have no idea and won't get into that because... well, I don't care to be honest but I hope they do Like I said earlier, I don't mind a dongle in my desktop, but I wouldn't bring it out on stage if I don't absolutely have to. After I got the iLok dongle I have purchased other software that requires it, because I already have the dongle. But on my lap top I use other software than the dongle dependent ones. For a synth which is only a few megs big, or a reverb etc, that can easily be run on a laptop and used live, a dongle would not only take up a USB port I most definitely need for something else and important but it can break off. Not saying it will, but it can and that sucks, and that's enough for me to leave it at home and use something else. The other problem is when you are away from home, ready to play a gig and your dongle is at home. You're screwed! They are an annoyanse in that way. But I respect that people have different views on this. What I am saying is that if software needs a dongle, I'd be making a choice to aquire it depending on whether I'd want to bring it out of the studio as well. That's me, you may think different, but this is an experience from someone who also have aquired a dongle after years of avoiding it. Another thing, when these things were entering the marked, there were a lot of driver issues and incompatibillity with software updates, other hardware and so forth, which I think we are seeing with the Ignitionkey from Propellerhead today. It is an undeniable fact that this happened but it may be unfairly assumed about dongles today. I don't know. I don't care. I just know I still hate them even after depending on one and having one installed in my DAW. Do I loose my sleep over it? No.

For the record. I was not complaining about the use of or reuirement of dongles. It was a system related question only. After research and trying a few settings I discovered that, in fact, the drivers for the Ilok and Propellerhead key were causing conflicts with the new P8Z68-V motherboard I just had built. I had posted in another thread about this very issue via the need to disable alot of new features that may/often do conflict with your sound card, DAW, plug ins, etc.. I am niether for, nor against these tools as long as they work the way they are advertised. When you decide to build a true 64 bit rig with new hardware I am sure you will remember this post and go................. O Yeah..................... /facepalm.

Hey Zepheron Sorry for derailing your thread. It got a little out of hand with the whole dongle thing We all have to deal with dongles sooner or later so let's just leave it at that. Anyways, glad you figured it out. But I wonder, is this specific to that exact MB and the combination of dongles? Wouldn't that mess up other software as well? And one final question, if you removed one of them, did Sonar/other troubled software work? Sorry again for this; I'm just curious and since the Propellerhead dongle is involved it would help me decide whether I'd upgrade to Reason 6 or not

NEVER...! 2) ...by the way, just for further Infos, the dongle involved with next release of Reason, according to the requirements reported on Propellerhead's site, will STILL be the ugly IgnitionKey... Not CodeMeter Stick, as previously suggested in this thread... http://www.propellerheads...rticle&article=FAQ

iLok drivers can be problematic sometimes, but I'd still rather have that then spend hours re-authorising challenge/response on over 80 legit plugins.

No issues here at all with the Props Ignition key (Wibu/Codemeter stick.) on its own. I don't have anything iLok or Synchrosoft. There's a possibility I suppose of more than one protection system being present is causing a clash.

Hi gothic.angel, the ignition key is a Propellerhead named and branded CodeMeter Stick, which uses the CodeMeterControlCenter and the Codemeter firmware. @Zepheron: Thank you for mention the ASUS board.
