BBC & other politically correct media, we're leaving the EU & this nonsense has to stop...

I'm completely fed up with this stupidity.

Sick to the back teeth in fact.

I am not a happy Straummy.

Can we now return to some semblance of common sense, where:
  • The height of mountains is measured in feet, not metres
  • Rainfall is measured in inches, not millipedes
  • The distance between two points on the earth is measured in miles, not kilometres
  • A person's weight is disclosed in stones and pounds (or just pounds if you're from the US), not kilograms
  • Rugby Union has a 25 yard line, not a 22 metre line
  • A repeat is called a 'repeat', not 'another chance to see'

Thank you.

Is it ok to use centipedes in tropical rain forest areas?

I have some friends back in the UK who delight in making smug comments about how "behind the times" the US is compared to the infinitely enlightened Europe, which of course exists on a higher plane of awareness that the Yanks aren't even aware of. They seem to go through phases of attacking the US over different things. A while ago there seemed to be a meme going around that America's refusal to adopt metric measurements was symptomatic of their refusal to adapt to the rest of the world. But I really don't know what's wrong with the Imperial system. When I got into it with them, one of their arguments is that the metric system makes more sense because of its units of 10. Does that mean that computers are inferior because they think in binary? Or that programmers are "behind the times" when they use hexadecimal? Surely kids benefit from being raised in the Imperial system because their minds are more attuned to the idea of different number bases? And I kind of like Imperial measurements. Because of their reference to real world things, they make it easier to eyeball things roughly. A foot is, well, roughly the length of a foot. Yes I know there are different sized feet, but again we're talking about eyeballing things here. An inch is roughly the distance from the thumb joint to the tip of the thumb.  A cup is, well, a cup. These measurements have evolved primarily because of their relation to real world things.

And when you have units that are base 12 or 16, you can half them easily a number of times before having to bring decimals into it. I like that.

I avoid getting into discussions promoting one or the other (Imperial or Metric that is).  I think they both have their pros and cons, and that both should be taught in school so people know how to apply whichever is more suitable for a task.  I don't expect everyone to memorize the conversions like 1/4" = 6.35 mm (that's millimeters Steve!  ), but it's usually not that much extra effort to include both values on things like tools (or a conversion sheet).

The same applies to other areas like weight as well (to me, being 18.5 stones is ridiculous - double entendre intended!).

I don't know how many stones I am.

And I don't know how to drive in metric either.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

The trouble with miles is it takes a lot longer to get any where, I am 200 miles from London and it takes 4 hours. If it was kilometers I could get there in about 3 hours. Its hardly rocket science 😊

The imperial system is ridiculous. Conversion between units is silly. Pretty much all scientists use metric. Computers use binary because a bit is an on or off switch. I would argue that the simplicity of conversion leads to fewer kids giving up on math. Americans will never go to metric because they cling tightly to the past (despite obvious benefits to modernization.)

On a serious note.

One of the very first jobs I had when I started work for a mining company in the 1970's was converting all the elevations on the mine plans from feet to metres and updating the plans. Prior to that all the horizontal coordinates were in meters but heights were in feet. The Ordinance survey used the same mixed system and had done so for years.

We still had steel measuring bands and levelling staffs in feet, but the subdivision were decimal so it was 1.5 feet, not 1' 6"

At college I had used measuring Chains. One Chain was 22 Yards and divided into 100 links.

Having spent most of my working life outside the UK I tend to think in Metric except that peculiar British thing where if the weather is warm we use Fahrenheit but centigrade when its cold.

Speaking of nonsense. I have been watching our conventions etc. and starting to think the Democrats have hired a boob to run against them that could not possible be elected only to find out the masses are so disillusioned about the their state of being that there is a chance the boob could be elected after all or it's all a show to create the illusion they have a choice in the first place

And while we're at it, Jules Vern needs to change the name of his book "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea."  It should be "69046.767 Miles Under the Sea."  So there.

Also, most people think he's talking about depth, he had to know that in the future people wouldn't be so tied to the sea that they would even know what a league was, and that they would assume he meant depth, so he should have titled it " Traveling 69046.767 Miles Around the Sea."

I suppose somebody will mention that he was French, and what else would you expect, but I love everyone, so it won't be me.

I wouldn't touch metric with a 3.048-meter pole,

Actually, I've no problem with metric units and think it would be a great convenience not to have to buy two sets of sockets.

There is, however, one exception (and it's the one folks in the UK and Canada seem to have no problem with): temperature measurement.

While the centigrade scale is convenient for chemists, in everyday use the Fahrenheit scale's resolution more closely matches everyday human experience. Negative temperatures should describe a really, really cold day, not a typical Winter day in the northern latitudes. Zero to 100 Fahrenheit encompasses the range of what we experience in real life, unless you live in Antarctica or the Mojave Desert. Zero to 100 Celsius encompasses the range of liquid water, rarely relevant to whether or not I'll put on a jacket.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
