When this started my wife almost jumped out of her skin... I had to scramble to hit pause... I cranked it back up when she went out to the garden... that's how you do that... Great work on this ol' rocker guys... Outstanding mix... fine work Steve...

As you know furry ears previewed this only the other day. Will go have another listen. Classic Quo, as this is not my area of particular thingy I refrain from any mix advise other than to say it sounds reasonably balanced. OK I have say perhaps a little more punch on the kick and a little more definition. Thanks for sharing

Very nicely done for sure. Blew out my ear drum, but then again I don't need it much any more. HA! Just kidding. Great song all the way through and a nice mix. Peace and Blessings, John

Jeez man. about blew my head off. Don't know if that's a good thing or not. Once I got over the over compression, I decided it was a pretty good job (at a very low volume). Everything cut through nicely. Drums are definately kicking butt. Don't know the original or Status Quo.

My favorite by them was their cover of the Beach boys Fun Fun Fun :-) You need to cut loose more on the vocal! But this was pretty good.

Many thanks for the great input guys I've remixed the song as per your great advice, specifically to: - Re-sculpt the EQ on the Kick (thanks Wook)
- Pulled the compression on the Master Bus right down to let this breathe a bit (thanks Tim)
I've also lowered the compression on the drum bus and dropped the overheads 2dB. Remix: BACKWATER (26/07/13) I'll be along to add some individual thanks shortly

Thanks Mike. Unfortunately I can't do a lot, other than re-record the guitars, because I took the tones straight off my Kemper and I don't have a DI to play around with. The Rig Profile I used was actually made with Francis Rossi's Marshall JCM800:

Tough call on this A/B'd the two mixes and there's bit in one I like as there is bit in the other I like. Like Mike said the Vox could come up a tad in the second. I would also be tempted to narrow the spread of the opening guitars after the intro. If my furry brain is remembering correctly Mr. Anderton did an interesting article recently in SOS using Breverb and channel tools to widen the reverb to create a large sound-stage but leave the centre clear. This I feel might help then I could be talking out of my furry behind. Having said all that I enjoyed hearing you both play and it all works well. Thanks for sharing your innumerable talents.

It's still good, arguably better? But you need to have a few cocktails, or whatever your preferred alteration is, and retrack the vox, and sing it with attitude... Like you have the biggest "mic" in the room. You have to feel it, and make everyone else believe it's true. And I understand it's probably a tribute (not familiar w/the original) but I would echo some of the lead vox parts after they happen? The vox definitely need more energy. You may could do it in the mix? I.e., double w/a slight delay, compress, slapback? There are lots of techniques. The guitars and everything else sound great to me. And the vocal performance isn't bad? It's just not blowing my skirt up? And I feel like it should on this kind of tune? And the guitars seemed to "gel" once the song got going? Early on, the one in my left ear seemed a little early on the attack? (only slightly) The one in my right ear seemed to be on throughout. These are minor observations (except the vocals :-) Again, I like what you've done? But I would make it more "banging..." A tune like this needs that vox "in your face." However, please keep in mind, I am not a mix master, and sometimes ****ed when it comes to this aspect... I am merely offering my honest opinion because I respect you as a forum member, and musician. You should blend my input with others. (however also keep in mind that some people only blow smoke? And will never give an honest opinion) That was "re" and rhymes w/popTARTed. But the SW ****'ed it out.

Nice Job on this one Steve.... the only thing I`d do different is get a doubling effect on the vocals...everything else sounds better than the original.

Hi Clint, and incidentally, I'm with you 100% on your wasp-genocide policy - I hate the bloody things As to the Kemper, I'm absolutely loving it! They're a bit pricey, but for what it can do, there's nothing out there that really compares. It comes with a load of pre-installed rig profiles, and there are hundreds more available to download for free on the User's 'Rig Exchange' area of the Kemper website. There are also an increasing number of professionally produced profiles for sale. As it happens, the rig I recorded this song with was a paid-for option (see my reply to Mike above for all the details) - and it was only £5! I can't offer an opinion on AxeFx, but I've got a feeling that there are some AxeFx user profiles available that members have created by mic-ing up a cabinet and feeding the profiling signal through some of their amp models.

@ Robby, Mike, Wook, Al Hey guys, thank you so much for the technical advice, especially with regard to the vocals. As well as being the first time I've recorded with my mate Sid, it's also the first real opportunity I've had to mix a song with a vocal track. So I'm really grateful for all the specific advice you're giving me. Robby, that's my mate Sid doing the singing, and I'm not sure when we'll get a chance to re-record, but in the meantime I'll certainly try the doubling idea that you and some of the other guys have mentioned. I feel I'm getting there with the backing tracks (as per the VeRy MeTaL stuff I occasionally do with Troy), but I really am a complete novice at the vocal stuff. So, once again guys, many thanks for the indispensable help.

Hey Steve, like the song. I like the spread on the guitars. Vox sound good too. I still think there's a bit too much compression on the drums though. They're kinda pumping still. But that's only my opinion. Still a good job though!

This is sounding better, and it feels a little more dynamic, but I would push those vox a bit harder in the mix. And as Mr. no999 commented, you may want to brighten this a little as well. But they still feel buried (to me) like they are fighting w/the guitars and the toms. If it was an instrumental, put a bow on it... But songs with words are different. "But"my ears are getting older, along with everything else... Except? Well, you know.

Hi guys I've uploaded REMIX #3 based on the suggestions you've kindly made. Specifically: - Vocals are doubled, nudged, and panned a little apart; I've added a little tape compression to the Vocals bus.
- Restructured the intro guitar parts.
- Drum compression tamed.
Thanks again for the input, I really appreciate it
