Darin, great country song man! I really enjoyed this!! And I think your keys sound fine.

I liked every thing about this, you seemed a little choked up in a few parts? For the most part, your vocals were perfect (IMO).

I like the guitars, and the steel.

Right at 3:00 you had a flat part on a backup and a few more after that.

At 3:06, the lead guitar did something "funny".

The issues are minor in this song, I'm glad you're working to tighten it and make it as good as it can be. Again, I really enjoyed this. I'm doing a country song right now too :-)

Gary, I appreciate the compliments! And great idea. For some reason I hadn't thought about asking for help from a pedal steel player here. I'm not sure of how to go about doing such a project. I assume that I would lay down all the basic tracks and then fire off an MP3 (or would it have to be a wav?) with all the critical info such BPM and then someone could lay down a steel track, send it back, and I could finish off the track with the lead guitar work and such? (is that a long question or what!) I'm wondering how to get the wav files back and forth. Does everyone just burn to disc and mail it back and forth? It might be possible for me to figure out how to set up an FTP server on one of my computers. I'll have to look into that. I would be willing to purchase the software to do it if I could make it work.

Robby, Thanks for checking in! Yes, there is a lot of work left to do on this. I'm going to re-track almost everything. This is my "scratch" track, so to speak. I didn't take a lot of care with laying down the tracks on this, as I never planned on keeping them. I wanted to get an idea of where I was with it by getting some feedback from everyone. The part you mentioned about the lead guitar doing something "funny" is the kind of feedback I'll use to see if it's just a timing thing, or if I should consider playing something a bit different. I appreciate the close listen, as it is something that I hadn't noticed and I'll be looking into it. All of the vocals will be redone for sure. Thanks for your input!

Hey Darin,

Check out www.davidspires.com. I know he used to provide asteel guitar service over the net. I know I've seen another player on these forums as well, but David Spires is the name I remember from awhile back.

Wow Darin! How did I miss this one. Well, better late than never I guess. Pretty sounding acoustic guitar. Piano sounds sweet and your voice fits this like a glove man! Well done. Good lyrics and strong song composition. Just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed this song. That's what does it for me!!

Just two words...
Waylon Jennings... as I was listening, that's all that ran through my mind.

And that's a GOOD thing. Nicely done. Very nice.

Darin, I think the tune sounds great as it is, minus some mix tweaks (particularly the drums are a bit buried and lacking some top end). The thing I like most, besides the song itself (and I'm really not a country fan!), is production wise you have some really nice seperation between the backing elements. It has a very "minimalist" quality when it needs it, which really focuses the attention on the story and the story teller. The backing elements aren't fighting for attention. Particularly when you break it down after the first chorus -- at around 1:52. Everything's really open and uncluttered between the simple, repeating lead guitar and piano riffs, and that great sounding pad and the bass coming in every other bar. Just really simple and open and emotive. Sometimes it's as much what you don't play as what you do play! Then you pick it up again at 2:18 leading up to the second chorus. Really really nice structure and variation.

Wow guys, I thought this thread had died off.

Alkie, M.Man and Larry, Thanks for the thumbs up! It's always appreciated.

Big D, That is certainly a compliment of the highest order. Waylon is what I grew up on and he is still my favorite artist. His music has had a very large influence on me. Thanks!

Kieth, it's taken me a long time to understand when to 'not' play (and I still don't get it sometimes). I have probably tracked this song three or four times before this version. When I say that "I didn't take much care", I meant that I didn't worry about the recording technique or that the parts were played to their potential. That's why I never intended on keeping the tracks. I took great care in deciding what to play, and where. It's very gratifiying for me that you noticed all the little details that I labored over. Many thanks! I really appreciate that you took the time to listen so closely.

Darin,

Really good song. I can't argue with anything that's already been said, but I wanted to add that the guitars were recorded very well. They came through very clean and present in the mix.

Regards,
Dan

Thanks Dan. I hope I can do the song some justice on the final tracking. I'm hoping to get a pedal steel in there, and I'll be taking a lot more time with the guitars. I'm a little surprised at how well they came out, considering I wasn't very careful about how I set anything up when I recorded them. Thanks for the listen!

I like ALL music, (or any artform), that's performed honestly and with a feeling. If it's then performed by skilled personal it is even better!
So, I like this! Even if it IS country.....
