Bandlab update?

I awoke this morn to an ominous prompt to update some unknown and unidentified software. As a recent victim of vicious hacking that left me temporarily $400 overdrawn, alarm bells were ringing madly. After investigating in Task Manager and seeing it was Bandlab, I okay-ed the update. REALLY, Meng and Bandlab Bakers, pa-LEESE properly identify your updates in the future. This heart is kinda old, yunno?

Yours With a Song,

And in general, add more customizability to bandlab\cakewalk, it feels really outdated to not be able to install software in the folder you want, setup program folders or to easily disable autorun on startup, etc.

Thanks for posting this. I came here for the same reason. I saw this message at home last night and now again at work (where I also installed the new Cakewalk). This is absolutely unacceptable and they need to change this TODAY.

A message appears on my screen saying "Updates are available" with zero information about the program or the company name. I was 99% sure it was a virus and it took a bit of investigating with Process Explorer to figure out. I don't even know why that bandlab assistant is running on my computers. At no time did it ask my permission to keep running after I closed it and frankly I don't want or need to have it running. When I want to check for updates I'll do it manually, thanks. The last thing I want is another program running, stealing CPU cycles and memory.

Very scary. This is a huge black mark on the company already. It makes me wonder what else they've snuck onto my computers.

On the bright side, I did test the program on a huge song (over 200 tracks, almost 10 minutes long) last night and had no problems so it's a good news, bad news day so far! Thanks very much to Bandlab but you need to be more transparent in certain areas.

Happened to me also...I was in the middle of mixing down and the pop up scared me. Glad you posted this. I thought it was a potential virus carrying app also.

This happened to me yesterday just after installation and causing a slight panic. Having backed up everything last week I decided to go ahead and "run the update" anyway, which proved to be OK.
Either identify the program causing the update to run or allow us to turn off the BandLab Assistant.

So sorry if it was something it was confusing or scary guys - we will add the clarification message in the next update - we missed this one before launch.

We push updates and improvements to BandLab extremely regularly on all platforms, though - it may get some getting used to but I think you'll be pleased! :-)

In case you're worried, it's only updating BandLab Assistant as we noticed a few launch bugs, not CbB.

Option to Enable and Disable BLA at startup is also coming in the next update!

Don't panic. BandLab assistant configures itself to run automatically when you boot. Whether or not you consider that a convenience (to check for updates regularly) or not is up to you. You can remove it from the autostart list if it's annoying.

I elected to disable it from running on boot, because I am not a BandLab user and probably never will be, and only care if cakewalk.exe is updated. Grab a copy of autoruns, part of the Sysinternals collection and a handy utility to have. Search for "BandLab Assistant" (it's under HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run in the registry) and un-check it.

That doesn't actually work as mentioned here as when you reopen the app it adds the registry value back, but meng is on to it :-)

You could also uninstall Bandlab Assistant (BA) and reinstall it when you need to get an update.  CbB seems to run fine with BA uninstalled.

Yikes. That's straight out of "Programming: Worst Practices 101". That programmer should be marched out and...I was going to say "shot" but that's unduly cruel. More likely it was an inexperienced junior coder who thought he'd had a good idea. Or his previous job was writing rootkits for Sony.

Guess I'd have known that if I rebooted more than once a week.

Quick 'n dirty workaround: rename update.exe to something else to prevent it from running.

I think we should hold off on jumping on board 100% at this point. Lets' let others be "beta testers"
I uninstalled all the Bandlab stuff and will just give this time.
It's a bit to much like a X1 release to me.

I think it is more like an attitude in the software industry of the 21st century. The engineers piss out software that dominates the users (intelligent programs!) instead of asking them what they want to do. Microsoft, Facebook, Apple, they are all good prototypes for this malpractice. More and more software slows down your startup, starts processes for things that happen rarely, eats up your computer and network resources. And most malicious is the way they obscure the possiblities for users to turn off the plagues. Unfortunately many of the programs I liked have gone into this direction and IT IS SURELY NOT THE END of that evil!

Oh God, how much do I like to live in this fantastic century!
In the past I liked software and the internet, because it made things easier and faster. Nowadays I spend so much time to handle the hassles of software (automatic updates, internet authentications, installers, workarounds, fixing errors, virus protection ...).

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your issue with BandLab Assistant, but it can presently be disabled in the Task Manager Startup menu. It's disguised under the name of "Update" (publisher Github) and will then only run when needed from desktop.

I rather prefere when software update is checked opening the program (maximum once a day), than having more and more startup/service processes. It is even better if you can specifiy how often the program looks for updates (e.g. once a week/month or so). And most important, there should be always the possibility to postpone the update and that's why there should be a note what is included in the update.

Best regards Marc

Guys please be patient. I can assure you that the assistant is a small program and doesn't do anything malicious or weird. There are some rough ends since it is the first release of BA but it won't do any damage. We felt it was better to get a working CbB release to users as soon as possible than wait until every kink in the installer has been worked out. The auto  start feature predated this release since it was always in BA. The developer has already made it optional and we're internally testing a new release which should come out very soon that has a customized Cakewalk install as well.  Its a ton of work we had to do as part of this release since the release management process is brand new.

Cakewalk by Bandlab installs into a separate folder "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Cakewalk Core"

I do not expect this to change any time soon.

At the moment you don't get a choice. The only way Cakewalk by Bandlab would replace Sonar Platinum is if Cakewalk by Bandlab suddenly decided to install into the "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\SONAR Platinum" folder.

I personally do not see this changing.  Sonar will remain intact on your system as long as you don't uninstall it - which I recommend you don't do if you want to keep access to all of the Sonar VSTs.

Note: From this time forward, Sonar will not be receiving any updates.  Cakewalk by Bandlab will now receive updates from now on as they get released.  You install this via Bandlab Assistant.

Situational irony, An example would be a man who takes a step aside in order to avoid getting soaked by a wet dog, and falls into a swimming pool."
Another example would be to disable BandLab Assistant at startup, only to be late in catching an update which allowed  the choice to do so.
Well, am I not the clever one.

Hi,
Another problem I incurred with the lastest Bandlab update --- my midi no longer works.  I did a plethora of tests and went back to my Sonar Platinum --- found there was no problem with my midi working there
OK, Bandlab --- what did you change?  A simple file with my Play Steinway piano loaded and there's no midi response.  If I click on the keys in the Play interface -- sound is working fine.  Just no midi response.

Did anyone else have this situation?
Thanks,
Linda

lyralinda, have you configured your soundcard and midi devices the same way in Cakewalk as you did when you originally setup your Sonar install?

hate to jump on an old thread, but for the first time, I am having problems. I didn't want to open up a new threadThe thing for me is, I want to update -I am not trying to avoid it. I am hoping something is going to enhance my slow bootup of an existing project (song.) Mind you, it is having to load Omnisphere 2 with multiple tracks, Komplete Kontrol, 12 tracks of drums, 6 tracks of vocals, Play Composer's, 6 tracks of guitars, a slew Waves plug-ins,  and I digress this is getting too long. So, even giving it credit, it seems to swim around quite a while and today didn't respond at all so closed the program (not reboot) and all was well. So I was hoping an update might make it happier. But ----I got the Java Script error, shut it down, uninstalled and installed and when I open it up it looks like the little orange line at the top thinking and assuming it is a progress meter (it is isn't it) and it is stuck less than halfway through. I will go look again now and see if time has done anything for it. -be right back.

No, it's the same - hasn't budged (or laugh of the day for everybody) tell me it updated and that line isn't a progress meter and I'll get back to work.
