Bass players are the coolest of all...

Guitar heroes may be considered cool, but a cool bassist is the coolest of all...

My top five:

Jean Jacques Burnel (The Stranglers)

Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy)

John Taylor (Duran Duran)

Paul Simonon (The Clash)

Ed (The CHB)

Although I play like none of them (specifically), the conglomoration of these three guys were what influenced me the most to be myself:

And.... Jaco gets honorable mention just because he was one cool player (yet crazier than a bedbug).

    I'm a big fan of:
Bob Babbitt (I prefer his stuff to James Jamerson)
    Adam Clayton (U2, very tasteful)
Stefan Olsdal (Placebo, not a virtuoso but always plays the right lines)
John Deacon (Queen - Another One Bites The Dust & Under Pressure - who else got basslines noticed by the general public?)

But for coolest bass icon, Paul Simonon's photo above is one of my favourite live-band photos.  That should be etched on his gravestone.

Many moons ago in my teens at a Stranglers gig there was guy a few rows back giving JJB a fair amount of abuse - can't remember what about now, but after talking it for a while he put his bass down between songs jumped into the crowd, punched the guy, then got back on stage and continued as if nothing had happened, much to the amusement of the rest of the audience. Happy days !

Good call on JT too BTW - very under-rated and often overlooked IMHO.

Seems to be pretty much a standard thing back then Paul! I saw them on the Black & White tour (with the excellent Skids) in 1978 up the road at the Malvern Winter Gardens and JJB twatted some bloke with his bass for gobbing on him

Well he was a massive poseur (weren't they all!) but he did look pretty cool and he can definitely play.

Didn't everyone have pouffy sleeves back then?  I don't think they called them pouffy at the time.  Were they...    hip or rad?  We did and said some silly things while we were growing up.  Hell, I still do and say them.

Surprisingly, this guy was one of my early favorites ...... Phil Upchurch. I had the honor of seeing him play guitar with George Benson's Band, Great guitarist but also a great Bass Player.
