Beepster Metal (my first Sonar production)
Hi, guys. I finally finished my tester song. There is lots wrong with it and I'll give details soon enough but I'm about to fall off my chair from exhaustion. Just getting it up on the forum will give me a sense of completion. It is a wanky metal song (I do all styles but metal is far easier for me to compose and produce so I stuck with that for my first attempt). The performance is kind of sloppy for me and I'm a n00b in regards to digital recording but this more intended for me to learn Sonar and certainly I learned and ton doing this. Next time will be better. You might want to turn down your speakers because I have no idea how other systems are going to handle this and it is pretty noodly. So here ya go... Beepster Metal http://soundcloud.com/use.../beepster-metal-16-bit Cheers and thanks to all who have helped me since I've been here. You guys rule.

@notnat... Thank you so much for the kind words. Yeah, the drums were the biggest problem with this. It was intended just as a test of BFD Eco's standalone mode so I ended up with a stereo drum track that I couldn't do anything with once I tossed it into X1. I'm making some dinner now to hopefully get my brain straight again but I'll toss up all the details of what I did with this when I'm feeling a little more... uh... not whack. BTW there are no amps or anything involved with this. It was all done plugged straight into my interface and processed completely within Sonar and GR5. Cheers.

Lol, Beep, I was grinning all the way through that man. Very "Dork Metal" indeed haha. Loved the guitar work, and knowing how you did the drums it's not as bad as I thought it would be. If that's a so called test or learning project then I can't wait for something that is a bit more complete, and more like seven minutes long, with something like that in the middle. Excellent bit of axe work there Beep. To be honest, I mainly listen to prog and metal nowadays and I wish I could produce this kind of stuff myself, but I tend to stay in my comfort zone and produce simple electronica. Anyway, on to X2 for you now huh? cheers andy

Great stuff Beep - I like me a bit of metal, even though my own stuff is mainly old style prog. You want a bit of constructive criticism? I'm pretty sure I can hear more than one "chugg" rhtyhms in there, and I hope you double tracked them the proper way by recording them multiple times? Try panning your "chuggs" out really wide. It will open up the production enormously. You already know what's wrong with the drums so no point in going over that again. All in all, a great first song from Sonar. Keep on learning/experimenting/reading.

Hey Beepster, it's good to see and hear you on this forum. You sure have the chops for metal down to a tee. Though the drums are low in volume, they are programmed well and drive this piece. Will there be vocals? Either way, you don't have far to go to get this into the next level of coolness.

Hi, guys. Just woke up from a much needed sleep. Thanks for listening and all the kind words and encouragement. It's a little silly but I kind of got a bit nervous about posting it. This would not have been possible without all the help I've gotten from the forum these past few months. This place is brilliant. Once I get some caffeine in me I'll start typing up the blow by blow on my procedure to hopefully get some input on where I can tweak my techniques. @synkro... Thanks, man. I kept it short and sweet with my foot on the gas this time. I figured I'd give myself just enough material to dig into the various aspects of recording and producing the style. As far as the Techno vs. Metal thing why not mash them together? I was big industrial fan as a young lad and always liked electronic stuff with some down and dirty guitar crunch. Heck, if you want I could try to metalfy some tracks for you or shoot you some riffs to loop. If it has a beat I can usually get something evil happening. Guitar parts are easy for me. It's everything else that messes me up. Cheers, dude. ;-) @Jonesey... Thanks, man and yeah I think next to the drums the rhythm guitar parts are the next thing that are lacking. Kind of a combination of issues that I'm looking to remedy (which I'll detail later). There are indeed two distinct rhythm performances. I panned them out to about 10% thinking that would be enough but when (and if) I revisit this I'll keep that in mind. I don't know much about proper mix separation but I'm learning so future endeavors should be a little more presentable (I was trying to go for a nice Slayer type chug but it didn't quite work out). I didn't really dig too much into that kind of thing with this because of the stereo drums. I just couldn't isolate the kit pieces so trying to get everything out of the way of each other was proving very difficult. It was a bad mistake to use the BFD export instead of doing things right in Sonar but I was excited to play with it and that's what went down. Cheers, dude and thanks for listening. @digi2ns... Thanks. Definitely gotta do something about the rhythm guits. The next electric guitar experiments are gonna involve some fancier input techniques so I'm hoping that will help get rid of the squishy squashy sim sound. If it comes down to it I may just mic my amp with distortion already applied for this kind of stuff but I'm really hoping to get a handle on all this sim business to keep things simple and completely editable as far as FX. Cheers. @Daryl... Thanks, dude. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do next. I am kind of tempted to stay on the metal train just to get it right but I also want to dig into some acoustic stuff as I have about 40 songs or so I need to record for one of my bands. However I was thinking of recording a metal album at the same time so when I get burnt out on one style I can switch over to another to cleanse my musical palate. Cheer, man and thanks for listening.

@Lynn... Thank you. There probably won't be any vocals for this unless I totally redo the song. At first I was gonna put a silly little yelping blurb at the intro part but just sucked into the music and figured the leads kind of made up for it. It's noce to finally have something up. It's been a long time coming. ;-) @makzimia... Thanks. The weird thing I find about doing production is you're not doing anything physical but just having your brain in high gear like that drains you. I can spend an entire day screwing around on the internet and not get tired at all. If I sit at my DAW screwing around with stuff I start feeling spent after only a few hours. Not sure what that's all about but I try to take lots of breaks to avoid it. There's gotta be a medical explanation for it. Cheers!

This is pretty cool! nothing to add regarding the production that hasn't already be mentioned. Some more stereo would be nice. However, I really liked the tune a lot! Love the melodies and the guitar playing is ace. Well done

I'm typing up what I did for you guys to pick apart and hopefully nudge me in the right direction. Cheers.

Thanks for listening, Wookiee. @synkro... Awesome. I'm a still pretty slow at getting things done but that'd be cool. Anyway guys, as I was typing up my epic description (which is what I've pretty much been doing all day) I realized I completely screwed up on my rhythm guitar section. The idea was to have three instances each of my two main rhythm tracks, set the first three to "Cleanish", "Low and crunchy" and "Hi". Then copy all those settings to the next set of three. However I made a complete mess of it and my second set is nothing like the first set so there's no point detailing what I did at this point. Kind of annoying because I spent a loooong time typing today but at least it uncovered my screw up and I got a chance to look at the project in far more detail than I would have otherwise. Cheers.

I think I'm gonna give this one more shot and really hone in on every single setting I made. I was kind of getting fed up with the tune but now that all the heavy lifting is done I shouldn't just abandoned it. I'll find a way to get those drums and rhythm guitars out into the open. Heck, I might even rerecord the rhythms using some of my external gear. I've been meaning to play with that stuff anyway so it'll be easier with a "finished" tune anyway. Thanks for the input and encouragement guys. I'll get this. Cheers.

Once towards the end, the "wall of sound" reminded me of Rob Zombie when I saw him last Christmas. They made Z Z Top sound like a coffee house band. Well, not really. HUGE! I'm going to find that part and crank it up even more. My speakers will handle it but I'm not sure about my wife! LOL. Wow, I had a lot of volume room and it was in the 1:24 area that I flashed on Zombie. This needs to be cranked up to gert ther real effect!! I agree with a bit more drums, maybe next time. Pretty stinkin' good job, buddy!

I followed your other thread on the main forum so I know of your trials with the drums.
