Best Late Paper excuse letter EVER....
My husband, the good Dr (PhD, that is) received this in his inbox this morning. No lie. It's real. And hilarious. The guy is Korean, and not a native English speaker, so pardon his language - but that's not what makes it funny: Hello, Professor. I wonder if I can summit the case-study paper either late tonight or tomorrow. I know that I should have managed my time well, however, I had some issues with my rent. It has been almost two month since I caught the first mice in my apartment. So far, I caught four mice. In fact, it disturbed me a lot cencentrate on studying. Moreover, my wife was freaked out when she found out that we had mice in our house. She is extremely scared about the mice. Therefore, I tried to catch them if I heard some mice noises. I usually stayed up late night and studied, however, whenever I tried to concentrate on reading and studying, I heard noises that mice made. Whenever I heard the noise, I checked the whole apartment to catch the mice. Then, I could not concentrate on reading anymore and I lost my study mood. I guess it is silly to blame mice, but in fact it is very stressful. Especially, increasing number of the mice that I caught and killed, I am getting stressed more and more. Actually, I told my landlord about the mice problem almost two month ago on the phone, but she has not done anything until I sent her email. I am still dealing with my landlord to resolve the problem, but she kept on asking me waiting. I regreted that I should have contacted her with an email or with a letter when I noticed the mice problem at first. I guess I am learning by this experience. If you can consider my situation, I would really appreciate. I feel embarrassed asking you extended deadline of the paper due to mice problem, but I am extremely stressful that I do not know how I have to deal with my landlord and mice problem. And, I do not know how long that I have to wait for the solution. I hope that mice problem would solve as soon as possible because I cannot manage my life anymore. So, please consider my excuse. Thank you, Professor. Sincerely, (Name Withheld) Of course, with this brilliant letter - using which, in fact, one could write an entertaining 6-page article for the New Yorker - he was given an extension.

the mice are there because of the economy I agree ... you don't find a whole lot of mice in Beverly Hills ... unless Bapu planted one! Cher wouldn't like that with her long legs!

julibee Oh, NEVERMIND, then! My, my, did I just see a glimpse of a little foot stomping to go with this post?... My thoughts were that he starts off blaming his rent issues and then he goes off into running out a full stream of conciousness thing with the mice. For that reason alone I would have nailed his a$$ to the floor. Firm but fair, that's me. (actually really I'm a bit floppy and dark haired but that's not important just now)

It perfectly exemplifies It's my BAT and my BALL and I'm taking them HOME after I've had a nap and been to the store syndrome. Only kidding Jules, I thought it was a reasonably humorous post

Quite amusing. Sorry I'm 2 hours late with this comment, but I had this extremely stressful problem involving 4 mice - they stole my laptop and I had to chase them all over the place to get it back.

My, my, did I just see a glimpse of a little foot stomping to go with this post?... Damn straight! As long as you visualized a copletely adorable, tiny 'lil foot doing the stomping whilst the little girl attached flipped the hair out of her eyes with one perfect little hand, and pouted ever so cutely. But that would not have been me. My foot stomping wakes the neighbors. ... So far, I caught four mice. Four mice. You can't deny the significance of this recurring pattern in your life, Jules. You got me there, Murr. I'm starting to see the pattern.

I'm in a similar position to the good Dr mentioned above, having received letters like "the mouse defence" in my time. The writer's clearly facing culturally and domestically challenging circumstances, and he makes an impassioned plea for mercy. I applaud the good Dr's wisdom in granting him the extension. Like me, he's probably heard a few choice stories before but I'm guessing the combination of mice, wife, and landlord is pretty original.
