My last unfortunate experience was with a cheap USB guitar by Behringer - had to return it, could not get any decent sound out of it, and even had trouble removing its driver software, fortunately I could return it, and bought DimPro, which I *had* researched pretty extensively, as how people liked it.

Guess that's the last time I bought anything on impulse - I force myself to really go and find out every reason I might NOT want it - and when in doubt, I wait. Saved me quite a few bucks.

Good buys - Sonar, DimPro, Edirol FA-66, Adobe Elements Bundle, M-Audio Keyboard.

On my list: AlphaTrack (ordered - still pending judgment), guitar modeler, Cort EVL-K6.

I'm a perfectionist, and perfect is a skinned knee.

Worst
Novation ReMote SL - I bought it so I can use it with Sonar, but Novation NEVER released an automap for Sonar (yet), while they released automaps for just about all the other major sequencers on the market.

Best
Edirol HQ Orchestral - Although I own highend orchestral libraries now, it was the one that got me started on orchestral writing, and I still use it a lot for sketchingt out ideas.

If we're talking about all musical purchases...The best is my Mesa Boogie DC10 combo amp. The thing is a beast, and works like a champ gig after gig. The worst was a Boss modeling wah pedal, a real piece of junk. The piece I wish I never got rid of, a mid 70's Guild Polara S100, their version of the SG. I'll find a replacement someday.

Best:
Apple Macs - happier every day I made the switch. If your creativity (and job) spans beyond music ... nuff said
IK Multimedia Total Effects Bundle (AT2, SVX, CSR) - simply unbelievable. Note the Jimi Hendrix has some of the best Fuzz/Univibe models I have ever heard also.
Ableton Live - I can build songs so quick it is scary. Possibly one of the most innovative and inspiring DAW platforms I can think of in the industry.
Sonar 5 PE is still what I use to complete the songs due to its really nice effects suite and I know it well.

Worst:
P5 was pretty much so a bust but led me to Live

Worst:
Fruity Loops 3 "Lifetime" upgrades - They changed the name to Fruity "Studio" so they would not have to honor the "lifetime" upgrades.
JVC XU-301 CD/minidisk player - I still use it but, I just don't like the way it works.
Sony MDS-JE510 Only worked for 1 year had a 1 yr warrantee.
EV ND767 wireless. - The mikes are great, but the receiver pops really bad when you switch them off and on.
Chicken System Translator - early versions never translated stuff very well.
HP Color LaserJet 4500 - It worked ok for 1 year had 1 year warrantee. It was way too expensive to print as few pages as it has. Now it jams all the time, hard to print because you get 1 good sheet and then 1 that looks like and accordion
Sony TD8 DAT - Jammed up alot. Heads always needed lining up.
Tama drum throne (bicycle style) - Legs too narrow, always wants to dump over
Steinberg - The Grand, Free filter, HaLion (dongle version)
Kinetic (sorry cake)
Adaptec EZ Cd Creator
All those cards for my Lexicon PCM-80

Not as good as I thought it was:
Universal Audio M610 - Too much color, I still use for DI box. Might be I don't know what vocal mike sounds good with it???
Focusrite Octopre - it sounds great, but the fan in it is WAY loud!

Best:
Sonar 6 / Cakewalk forums, Samplitude, Vegas Video, BDF & Drumagog-BFD Version, Prosoniq - Time Factory, Finale 2007, Samplit with Kontakt 2, NI-B4, Harbal 2.3, GPO, Waves stuff(I hate it and I love it!), EZPlayer FREE, Toontrack-CAV, Kurzweil K2500, Yamaha Motif ES7, Yamaha WX5 w/ patchman's VL-70 chip, Gemeinhadt silver flute (pd $500), Millenna HV-3D, AKG 414TLII, Neuman KM-84's, Taylor 312-CE, On-Stage studio boom/stand, Digital Juice Video loops, Ultra USB/Firewire hard drive enclosuers.

These are just some things that come to mind.

Best,,, Sonik Synth 2, Sampletank, and Philharmonik. My go to sound source. I also got into a bunch of eSoundz Group buys for Sampletank sounds. I got into a lot of group buys, and felt I got a pretty good deal on every one I got into. I also bought a used Roland XP 60, which I love. I guess I have to add my DX7, which has been in my set up for around 20 years. It's been a reliable and good friend for all these years.

Tassman 4, FM7, Dimension Project 5, and V Sampler all are nice.

Worst,,, not many bad ones, but some that became "obsolete" quickly. My Ensoniq Mirage is the best example.

worst thing purchased for my studio i suppose....uggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
how about least used?.......wow i dont have a worst buy....my setups pretty simple but im glad to hear a fellow p5er say he wished he would have gotten a delta 1010..cause it was the sound card i choose for my new dual core system that p5 doesnt support so that's a wee bit disappointing but we can dream...ugghhh the best purchase I ever made in this regard was getting kinetic 2 or 3 years ago...that put me on p5...p5 opened me to Sonar and well the rest is history....not mystory the real story...what!...okkkkkkkkaaayyyy!

Best: Sonar, BCF2000

Worst: Edirol PCR-50 Midi Keyboard Controller (dead key issues within 3 months), BFD - OK if you are a drummer I guess but requires to much work to get anything useful out of it in my opinion.

Best : Sonar XL & PE versions, `59 Strat ( I´ve had it for 15 years or so ), mex Esquire, Fireface 400, Shaftesbury-LP (I regret trading it for some crapguitar), AKG Solidtube.

Worst : Guillemot ISIS 8/4 soundcard (totally without support after XP), Tassman 3, Sakai LP-copy (masonite-crap, a total sustainkiller), too small house for all my guitars, amps & other stuff. Too much alcohol & always choosing the wrong women.....
Probably coincidental...

Sonik Synth 2, Sampletank

Had 2 demos on a free disk, but Sonik Synth crashed Sonar when I checked it out - I'll take a look at them again, if you think they're that good it. Maybe just a screwy install.

Worst:
Anything Phillips -- went through three CD burners and then gave up.
Soundblaster Live! Platinum -- Drivers were the biggest pain.

Best:
Pretty much everything I own now (see below). Probably the worst of this bunch is the Rolls headphone amp and the Rogue mandolin. Both are still useable, just not the best quality.

SYSTEMWARE: Dell Precision Workstation, 2.8 GHz Xeon processor, 1 GB RAM, 36 GB 10K RPM Ultra SCSI3 HD for main drive, 72 GB 10K RPM Raptor SATA drive for secondary, XP Pro. Dell Latitude D800 laptop, 1.7 gHz Centrino M, 1 GB RAM, 100 GB HD.

HARDWARE: Echo Gina 3G soundcard; Mackie 1202VLZ mixer; Yamaha MSP5 near field monitors; Studio Projects C1 mic; AT2033 mic; Sennheiser 545 reference headphones; Sony MDR-V700DJ monitor headphones; Rolls headphone amp.

SOFTWARE: SONAR 4PE; WaveLab 3; Waves Native Power Pack Bundle; EZ Drummer plus Vintage Rock add-on.

INSTRUMENTWARE: Roland JV-30 keyboard; Ibanez and Takemine acoustic guitars; Aria Pro II electric guitar; Rogue mandolin; Line6 POD; Fender Hot Rod Deluxe tube amp.

RE: Best / Worst - purchases 2007/05/21 10:18:39 (permalink)
I've been buying and selling equipment for almost 25 years so I'll stick to the more recent stuff.

Best:

Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 -- it lead to Sonar 1 through 6 (and I can still unlock the mp3 encoder )!
Edirol PCR-800 -- great control surface, works great with ACT. Not the best keyboard action in the world, but you get used to it. I use it almost exclusively now.
Roland Fantom X6 -- installed the orchestral and vintage keys SRX boards. I'll probably have this synth forever.
William Coakley's Perfect Piano volume V -- loaded into the Fantom X6...it is my go to piano and it blows away the stock Fantom pianos
Yamaha S90ES -- great synth engine, great feeling keys, nice Sonar control surface for those times when I'm working a few feet away from the computer.
Spectrasonics Atmosphere, Trilogy & Stylus RMX -- great stuff...what else do I need to say?
Minimoog V -- pre-ordered this when it was announced. It was a big disappointment at first, but Arturia's updates inspired me to dig deeper and I've fallen in love with it.
GMedia MTron -- wonderful!
Voxengo -- whole bunch of things...best $700 I've spent on VST plugins.
Sonicprojects OP-X Pro -- OB-X emulation that sounds fantastic.

Worst:

OBTune -- a watered down, pace-ridden version of AutoTune that never worked on my computer.
SampleTank 2 & SonikSynth 2 -- bought ST2 at Guitar Center and crossgraded to SS2. The quality of the sounds is less than stellar (with a few exceptions) and the source sampling was sloppy. I have had these for years and the only sound I have ever used on a recording was an alto sax patch from ST2...it's pretty convincing.
NI B4 II -- foolishly upgraded the moment it came out. The Leslie simulation just plain sucks. I should have saved my $99 (especially since I have a new Korg CX3).
Roland VS-1680 -- bought this just before computers got powerful enough to record with. It was buggy and difficult to operate which detracted from its usefulness.
Pyro -- never worked...not even once.

I'm sure there are plenty of others in the "worst" category that I just can't think of right now...

Bill

MOTU hardware was indeed more 'finicky' with mobo choice (at that point in time) than RME.
RME stuff is great... no doubt about it. Always has been... even before the Hammerfall/FF series
FWIW, I've been having very good luck with the new generation of MOTU hardware and current generation motherboards.
ie: Asus P5B-E or Gigabyte GA965P-DS3

The $300 charge does bite...
But... If you need an audio interface, that's less expensive than buying a new one.

There was a LOT of hardware that had issues with MP motherboards...

I have a real problem trying to find a "worst" musical purchase as I've had a need for most every bit of hardware and software that I own. But if I had to single out one "worst" it would probably be a Korg DDD-5 drum machine from "back in the day." It was great for awhile but then the pads developed problems and some of them started to stick which made it essentially unusable.

My best purchase would be a tossup between the Sonar line and my Alesis QSR which has a lot of very usable sounds. I also like my Roland JV-880 for string sounds.

Thanks Jim...

I have been following a few other posts where you have given advice on systems - and I must admit I was nearly about to buy a system based on the following:

Core2Duo E6600
Asus P5B-E or P5K
2GB DDR2

That is until I done some further research and found that my 424 is actually a rev1 - therefore just as useless in a new dual system as it is in the current one!

So yeah - if i upgrade I suppose I better factor in the $300 Motu tax for the PCIe version of the 424...

(No such worries when I bought the fender rhodes - just replaced a few tines & gave it a tune up)

Stick (great concept, but I haven't learned to master it)
D8B - I love my board, but if I had waited 2 years or so, I might have something that had full DAW integration.

Sonica Dual Core 3.4 GHz, 2GB Ram, 3HDs, UAD1, PoCo Firewire, DIGI 9652, D8B, vintage synths, guitars and more money than talent (though questionable how much of either). XP Home SP2. SPE6.2. Other things of variable interest.

Must depend of the music you play. My friend has that, and I listened to every preset, and IMO, they all sounded like crap. Could see them working for trance though I guess.

I have a love/hate relationship with Reason. It's really nice, but it's also a completely closed system. But I bought it before I knew what a VST was.
