Bitbridge: What do I need to know?

Bitbridge runs in the background whenever I have a Sonar project open in 64-bit Sonar.  I can see it listed in TaskManager (hogging a large amount of memory), but I would not really be aware of its existence except that it is sometimes a topic of discussion in the "X" forum.  People talk about using it or not using it, or using it with some plugins and not others, or whatever.  I'm curious.  How do they access it?  Or does it work differently in recent versions of Sonar?  There's nothing about it in the Sonar 7 PDF manual, so maybe I don't need to worry about it after all.

BitBridge is used by 64bit SONAR to run 32bit VST plugins. The 32bit plugins load automatically into the BitBridge server(s). BitBrdige works the same in all versions of 64bit SONAR and was last modified in 2009. If you are not getting errors from 32bit plugins then you really have nothing to worry about. There is a 3rd party replacement called JBridge. Some plugins work better in JBridge. There is a setting in the VST dialog for each 32bit plugin to control whether the plugin loads in BitBridge or JBridge.

Some projects won't play in 64-bit Sonar, i.e. the audio engine won't start.  When I close the project I get a error message "Teleport Server has stopped working".  When I switch to 32-bit Sonar the project plays fine. I suspect that it may be some particular plugins that are causing the problem but I have not identified them yet.

Which dialog?  By the way, Plugin manager is not present in the 64-bit version of Sonar 7 (see this thread).

The "Teleport" errors are generated from BitBridge. It sounds like you have some 32bit plugins that do not want to work in BitBridge. IIRC SONAR 7 was released in 2007 so there would have been a several updates to BitBridge since then. JBridge might be a solution. I do not own JBridge, the few 32bit plugs I have work in BitBridge. I stay current with Cakewalk releases so it has been a few years since using SONAR 7 and do not have it installed. Without a working Plugin Manager, I am not sure if JBridge will help. I believe the trial version of SONAR X2 will update BitBridge and possibly the Plugin Manager (remember those are shared utilities). That may be worth a try.

I think you're right. He'll also pick up some fixes to the Sonitus suite, possibly Dim Pro as well, plus the {redacted}.

Nice idea.  I'll try that, but maybe I should wait until I have more time to spend before I start the clock on the 30-day trial.

Trial versions of Sonar include minimal plugins, not even TTS-1 let alone DimPro.  They do include a copy of the Sonitus suite, but as I recall this too becomes inoperable after 30 days just like the main program.  Or maybe this has changed since the last time I installed a trial copy (version 8 I think).

DimPro updates are available separately anyway:

On the other hand, will this work?  Different versions of Sonar installed on the same computer tend to work independently.  Changing the VST settings in Sonar A would surely not have any effect on Sonar B.  In the past, I've had Sonar HS6XL, 6PE and 7PE all installed together and I far as I remember a VST scan run in one does not update the others.  I currently have both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of 7PE and the same applies.

Yeh, you're right about Dim Pro, it's installed separately. However, the Sonitus and Plugin Manager updates will stick. They're the same files you have in S7 and they're shared by all versions of SONAR; disabling them would also cripple your paid-for installation of S7, so they're not gonna do that. You'll also pick up some other goodies that they'd probably prefer I not mention.

The VST inventories in the registry are not associated with a particular version of SONAR, check your registry. The 32bit and 64bit Plugin Managers are shared utilities used by all versions of SONAR (that support native VST) on your system.

It worked!  Sonar 7 64-bit now has Plugin Manager and there was no error message when I closed a project.

Many thanks for the ingenious solution.

It was not detailed, more of a passing comment like this thread. In any event, you have a solution. BTW, you should now see the JBridge option in the VST plugin properties dialog in the 64bit Plugin Manager. If you ever decide you need JBridge.

The trial, for me, changed the default program  for cwp files.  Had to change this so I could double click the project files.

AND::::::   uninstalling the trial nuked 8.5.3.  Had to uninstall it to be able to get all the patches installed.

File associations are a simple fix. For the very reason the trial fixes the problems above, removing it will unfix the problem. "Shared" files are may be removed anytime a version of SONAR is uninstalled.

Unless you decide to upgrade, that is the safest approach. You could remove the directory that contains the SONAR X2 trail program and clean up the registry by hand. The automated uninstall would not be advisable.
