Seems to me that would be more like: "she had just returned $200k to the John Lennon Foundation"...

Great story, bit. wish I could justfy the trip. I've been an exhibitor for other industry shows in Anaheim, and lived right up the road in Brea for a brief period. Brings back the memories.

The archetype of the meddling/distracting girlfriend is universal for bands. Yoko was simply the first and best example. So perfect that her name is now synonymous for it in both noun and verb forms. While I think it's a little lame it's still more than I've achieved in my career.

I knew I should've seduced John Lennon when I had the chance. *sigh*

I think they did go out with a bit of a whimper actually. Except John of course who went out with a bang.  Now all we have left of the Fabs is the world's richest Drum and Bass duo... p.s. the Remasters are awesome.

Thanks for the crucial insights Bitflipper. Engrossing reading, these posts.

Well here I sit in my hotel room, where I had to return because my camera battery went dead. I tell ya, it's a good thing I've pursued audio instead of photography as an avocation.

I brought a camcorder this year. Took 30 seconds of video, then the battery went dead. After unpacking all my chargers and cords (cell phone, iPod, camera, laptop and two mystery devices) I realized I'd brought the wrong charger. So no video this trip. Maybe next year.

I still haven't managed to get out of the software section of the show. Haven't seen any guitars or drums or amps or even many microphones. There is just too much cool stuff there in the software hall.

Coolest thing seen/heard so far today: a new orchestral library for Kontakt 3.5/4. And it really is new - the developer just finished it up last week and didn't know if he'd be able to show it till the last minute. Consequently, he had no brochures or anything. After my battery charges, I will return for a snapshot. My camera is my notebook. Saves collecting a lot of paper. But I cannot now even remember the name of the product! Consequently, here I sit, waiting for the red light to turn amber on a little plastic box, because without the camera all I have left is short-term memory.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Re:Bitflipper's 2010 NAMM Thread 2010/01/15 15:29:59 (permalink)
Also seen/heard this morning: version 7 of Altiverb, still in development. I stopped by because I wondered what you could possibly add to what is arguably the most sophisticated reverb around.

The answer is a really cool-looking interface. Very pretty, very colorful, but best of all it's been greatly simplified and streamlined. Has a nifty relational browser for finding just the right acoustical space, with little photographs of the actual spaces. You can search on things like "wood surfaces", or "similar to...". For a reverb junkie, it's the ultimate.

Also checked out Lexicon's new software reverb. It's the same code taken out of the PCM96 but optimized to run on a computer - so it's not quite as good. But it sells for $1500 versus $4000 for the hardware version. Unfortunately, for my budget the distinction doesn't matter. I'll never pay that much for reverb. It's reverb, fer crissakes!

I noticed a general trend this year for traditional hardware companies to get into software. If you'd never heard of Universal Audio and walked up to their booth, you'd think they'd always been software company.

Big crowds at that booth, I think because they are holding interviews with big-name artists and audio dudes. All of whom probably got free gear in exchange for extolling the amazing virtues of the UA software. I wonder if they really took their pay in software or asked for an 1176 instead.

Although Cakewalk has moved up to a larger booth - the slot previously owned by DigiDesign - they've got some serious competition right across the aisle this year, and it's not ProTools. Presonus is making a big splash with their new DAW, recording live performances at their booth and drawing good crowds. I'll have to sit down for a demo because I still don't get what the excitement is over.

Should be fun sitting at the Presonus booth, seeing as how I am wearing the Cakewalk t-shirt Willy laid on me yesterday. It's the best t-shirt to date, with a dignified "Cakewalk by Roland" on the front and a gaudy "I-heart-NAMM" on the back.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your (now annual?) report on NAMM.  I enjoy reading your posts, adventures and all.

On Presonus: Studio One, I presume?  I sent a long apparently ineffective critique ("Think Aloud" on first uses) to Jonathan Hillman, then a marketeer --- Product Manager or some such title --- about all the problems I had trying to use it for MIDI.  Now please understand (everybody) that I don't particularly like SONAR either for MIDI, but both Reaper and Presonus' Studio One are really bad for MIDI-based projects.  Studio One has some really nice additions to MIDI editing over clumsy and buggy SONAR MIDI editing, but working with it on a real project was such a pain that I concluded I wouldn't use it if it was $40 for any of the MIDI-based projects I normally do.  It seemed to me to be a step backwards in every area other than MIDI editing.  So many things about it are just plain dumb.

The excitement may be over the ease of use for some folks, primarily those who work exclusively with audio, audio clips, etc.  It really is easy to use for those things, but so is Reaper.  I don't understand the "irrational exuberance" either.  Please do let us know if you figure it out and/or succumb to it.

Have fun!!

Best regards,
Dave Clark

But is it black? My two Cakewalk T-Shirts are black, and they don't get along well with the studio cats. I'd prefer a nice seafoam or teal.

forget all the technical and tell us what are the girls like there lol

Some where beautiful but covered it with dyed black hair and too much makeup. Some dressed like 18 year olds but were 40+, hanging out of their scantily clad outfits. Some were scantily clad and looked outstanding! News at 11.

On another note, I went to the Yamaha concert tonight with a stellar line up of Vince Gill, Michael McDonald, Natalie Cole and some newer artists whose names I can't remember. Vince stole the show in my book. One man, one guitar into a Fender DR. He brought the crowd out of their seats with Little Liza Jane.

Also saw Nathaniel Kunkel at the UAD booth. He talked about his approach to the mix and using UAD plugins.

I met the elusive but articulate Bitflipper today. Bit, really enjoyed talking to you about converters and 2 buss strategies. I agree with your post above about software becoming an increasing force. The first 1/3rd of the hall next to the Roland expo was pretty much the best part of the show. The other 2/3 was guitar and drums and after the 40th or 50th booth of those, it becomes a little mind numbing. So many strat and tele knock offs you wonder "Why, and do these new companies really have any hope of success?"

One of coolest things I saw today was the new 500 series console frames. PetesPlace.com I believe. Very cool frame for building a custom 500 series console. Last I received good news from the Grammy folks. My work on a PC game 10 years ago qualifies me to join as a voting, not associate member. Whoo Hoo! You have to have at least 6 musical works that have sold and I wrote 12 orchestral pieces for a game in the late 90s. They said that would qualify me. Made my day.

Gear: A bunch of stuff.

Sounds fun, Bit.  If Steve from AZAudio says Janet says hi, that's me.  I just bought something from him online and he said he was going to NAMM.  I knew it was a long shot, but since you seem to be in all the right places at all the right times, I thought he just MIGHT run into you.

You remind me of me--you enjoy writing about your experiences as much or more than the experiences themselves.  Although you write it better.  :-)  Have fun.  Next year hopefully some of us will remember to remind you to take your cables and the right battery.  I'm surprised no one did.  :-)

Re:Bitflipper's 2010 NAMM Thread 2010/01/16 14:38:33 (permalink)
I showed up at the Cake booth yesterday and gave Bit a ring and left a voicemail, but no answer.  Bummer!  There was a presentation already going on.  I scoped out the audience and saw 4 or 5 people that I thought could possibly be Bit.  Cori Yarckin was standing behind me and I was surprised that she looked so young.  From the myspace pics I assumed she was older and taller.

I watched the presentation then I talked to a Cake rep whose name I don't remember (sorry).  He was a cool guy though.  He was showing me the new midi controllers and I started telling him my needs for a midi controller (basically small, built like a tank- maybe steel contruction and superb touch/response) and how there is nothing like that on the market that I can find.

Also I told him how I was trying to meet up with other people from the forums.  I told him how sometimes we complain a lot, but we really just love the software and he seemed to understand completely.  He encouraged me to keep voicing my concerns.  He said that the information gets logged and that they do spend time reading customer feedback.  I thought that was awesome!  He gave me and my girlfriend shirts and entered me in a contest to win a VS100.

Other interesting things from NAMM:

-Watching Eddie Kramer give a very entertaining and educational demo.  He has a great personality and let us ask questions about his approach.

-Meeting Will Shanks at the UA booth and talking about the future of UAD and my own personal needs.  After that I watch Arabian Prince give his presentation-- very interesting.  After that they did a cell phone game/giveaway where the winner received their choice of a UAD2 Duo or a UAD2 Laptop.  The guy sitting across from me won.  DOH!

-Playing with Wavemachine Labs' "Voice Band" at their booth which I ended up purchasing later that evening.  If you haven't seen his youtube video, check it out

-I think we saw Steven Tyler unless this guy was just an extreme look-alike.  Can anyone else confirm that Tyler was at the NAMM show?

-Eating at Morten's Steak house was AMAZING.  Even the SPINACH was good?!?!

Very fun time!  Still debating whether we want to go back on Sunday.

I will be wearing a blue hawaiin shirt and blues jeans...and I'm very tall. My son and I are doing the show today.

I met Bit yesterday at the Cake booth.  He's lots of fun, but sadly, almost as old as I am.  He's still having 'technical difficulties' with his camera, but I got this shot on my Blackberry.  You can see Seth Perstein in the Cake booth doing a demo and Cori Yarckin, one of their featured artists in the foreground.  Cori had just snagged Bit's autograph on the front of her shirt moments before I took the shot.

BitFlipper At NAMM

Roland's booth was huge.  I really like the new V-combo VR-700 keyboard and the VP-7 Vocal Processor.  The VP-7 could make my voice sound good.

Motu had Al Kooper singing and playing with some tracks.  Nothing great, but it's always good to see a legend up close.

I did a quick tour of the guitar section and realized that I was the only guy not wearing black.

My ears are still ringing from the Adam booth.  They had a surround system using Adam monitors that was the best I've ever heard.  I had a ten minute private demo that was amazing.  Also really loud.

I also found the pitch corrector that Yoko is endorsing.  Its rack mount and has a wireless remote for the sound guy.  Looks like the big red 'That's Easy' button from the Staples commercials and has big letters that read 'Ono'.

For those that spent time at the Cake booth - did any of you take a look across the aisle at the Avid/Digi booth? I've been spending time over on the DUC and some have said it's kind of bleak over there. According to the layout online at the NAMM site Cake & Avid/Digi were right across from each other and that Cake's booth was bigger. Kinda makes one think, doesn't it?

I don't know why you think it's not quite as good. It's exactly the same algorythms but wihout the non-reverb FX you get in the actual unit. There's already been a large debate about it, with input from the coder himself, and the conclusion is that there's no audible difference.
