Bitten by an iBug
Ok at one time I blasted the new iOS revolution. But then these are gadgets and gizmos and I like to tinker so here I am now with Midibridge , Sampletank , Garageband , Audiobus and iRig MIDI. First it was the iphone. Now I have an ipad 4th generation. As soon as I get the lightning to 30 pin adapter my ipad will be a miniature DAW. Lots of cool things in the works...more use of bluetooth as a means to connect midi . WiFi not required. Audiobus is the glue that holds different apps together. Simliar to rewire and VST technology in larger systems. Can't wait to try the guitar apps eventually. We are finally seeing the means to fully use the platform with human input devices and apps that communicate with one another. Still can't see it replace my big DAW, but I can't put my big DAW under my arm and take it almost anywhere either.

You're a little ahead of me, but I'm on the bandwagon as well! I got a 4th gen 64G ipad for my 50th birthday. I don't have an iphone, tho, actually my phone's not even "smart" - so I just started into the world of istuff. I've been looking at getting that iRig MIDI like you have in the pic, but yes, I would also need a lightening to 30pin adapter for it, which makes it much more expensive. I've thought about using it to control my patch changes on my keyboards for live play.

Wow beagle..nice. You could make a lot of CH tunes with that much memory! Congratulations on your birthday! One of the things that initially turned me off to the irevolution was lack of good input devices and lack of inter app communication. Both problems have been solved with Audiobus and irig . Now you can get a good audio interface for it . The capabilities are way more than I had anticipated. One other advantage to Mac users is the ability to use bluetooth communication between units...no wires. I think you're going to enjoy the new gift.

what's audiobus? is that like a soundcard? I bought an Android based off brand tablet about a year ago and I just really didn't like it. so I asked for the 64G iPad for the big FIVE-OH! I've had it for about a week now. I'm already using it instead of chordsheets for playing live - I use "forscore" to import pdf files and create set lists and I love that you can make notes on it (I put patch info on them) and that it's easy to switch between songs.

Audiobus is located in the app store. It costs 4.99 but is well worth the money if you want to record Sampletank into Garageband or any other similar thing. I use songselect. I think I can get .pdfs from them. I'll look into this. Thanks Beagle. Sheet music can be a chore sometimes.

the WL and the pianist both also have ipads (although older ones not nearly as cool as mine! :) )and they both use forscore as well, so we can share songs easily. I'll check into audiobus - but I think my main focus at this point is going the other direction! using it for live and not necessarily for recording. but that may come later.

Beagle I got a 4th gen 64G ipad for my 50th birthday. Hmm... So we missed a birthday, ya? Well, hope you had fun 'cause, at your age, it's unlikely you'll remember it. It seems like just a little while ago that you were young like the rest of us and now you're OVER THE HILL! (At least that's my stance until Alex and I join you in a few months - hehe...)
Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

Oh, cool...keep these iThreads going. I just got an iPad 32g a couple of weeks ago and have not had a chance to look into all the musical benefits yet. I did a quick app store search to see what might be out there and it looked exciting. Since then, I got plowed under with work. I completely forgot about Garage Band, however. I think that app is actually free? I have an iPhone as well, so this could get interesting.

Still pretty reasonable, I may have to check it out. Then I will probably need an interface, though.

I have been curious about soundcard interfaces for iPad - I don't think my MOTU will work with it, there's probably only a few soundcards which will.

AVID recently announced their new iPad-compatible Fast Track. If they jumped on that train, it shouldn't be too hard to find an alternative. Off the top of my head, Alesis has one called iO4. They also have a nice docking station for iPads.

As much as I lothe the IKRAP stuff and blitz from a "certain" manufacturer.. I am using my IPAD with a Yamaha App called Set List Organizer with my Alesis IDOCK to switch patches on a two keyoard rig when I play live and at shows I do.Makes it more efficient. If the old harware stuff was available I would do it with that (patchbay/pactch changer/merger/midi interface), but this is streamlined and the IOCK mounts to my mic stand... SO yes I embrace certain IOS apps and hardware, but do I purchase every new IK app that pops up? NADA..

Oh, and how could I forget - Focusrite has this one. http://us.focusrite.com/i...interfaces/itrack-solo If the sound quality is anywhere near Scarlett's that would definitely be a winner. One thing though - judging from my experience w/ them, you're probably better off sticking w/ the default Apple Core Audio driver. After downloading their driver, I soon reverted to Apple's, which gave me better latency (by 3ms) and solved all the clicks and pops problems. In fact, if I learned one thing in the last 2 years it is that Apple makes darn fine and solid audio drivers.

Cool! I've been using my 32Gb iPad for a lot of serious music work - scetches, some of the synths, loop creation etc - since I bought it in June last year. It's great because I can go anywhere to get some inspiration to take back to the studio. I plug whatever I can into the Camera connection kit and I have the iRig Keys which is pretty cool. It mainly sits on my DAW as a tiny controller at hand but works wonders with the iPad. An associate of mine whom I do a lot of shows and writing with just ordered this to take out with the iPad and his mics, as well as using it for his simple Ableton Live setup. It's cheap, has two ins, MIDI I/O and works without drivers. We'll see if it's any good soon Now we're looking to utilize these gadgets Live as well. The mobile "revolution" certainly has it's perks and definitely is a lot of fun! I will never use an iPad as a serious DAW but as a tool in producing music, and as a cheap synthesiser for live playing, it really is excellent

BTW I do own and have used the I-Rig Midi the Line6 Mobilizer, and the IRig Audio. All work well and are compact. ALthough the Alesis unit is larger, Midi , audio, and usb are intergrated, plus it charges your IOS device while in use.

Ohh and props for the IKLIP, it was one of the few devices that will hold an IDOCK, although I cheated a bit and secured the fingers with some silicon. I mean it holds ok, BUT some band mate /drunk chick comes by and bumps the unit and the IDOCK would snap out and fall. I just purchased the Peavey version of Ithingy mounting. It seems to have more options for angles an dmounting. Il lreport when I get it in and deploy it.

I think all of those expect you to have either a very thin case or only a cover, tho, don't they? if you have one of the swivel leather or faux leather cases are those too big for the imount things?

Beagle just a FYI...if you buy a lightning to 30 pin connector buy only one from Apple. Don't be tempted to buy 3rd party hardware. I thought I was getting a bargain buying two connectors from ebay. They are wonderful to use with the older chargers but don't work for iRig midi. I am waiting for an order from Apple as I type this. This is where Apple shot themselves in the foot. The connector change has caused a lot of problems for a lot of people. After some poking around on the Apple website and posting a service ticket to IK, I found out that everything should be fine but only with a genuine Apple connector. I'll keep you posted on that. I have the Alesis synthstation 25 which can play Sampletank using the midibridge app. The Alesis software app isn't much use to me though. I'm sure there will be more hardware coming. I am impressed by those interfaces you guys posted. Like some of you I am getting my feet wet with this stuff. No question the sounds you can get are good using iPhone or iPad as a sound module. I was imagining the near future with me sitting in my recliner manipulating audio data and I started to feel guilty, but the feeling went away real fast.

yeah, the connector change is a pain, now that I see what's available for the 30 pin. luckily, we have an Apple store here in Ft. Worth, I don't have to order anything if I want official apple products - I just stop by on the way home.
