40,000 books eh? Hmm...if you read four a week, it would take about 200 years to read them all. You'd need some serious shelf brackets too.

Man I wish I was born in a house filled with 40 000 books of literature! My folks were quite content to read Selections from the reader's digest, pop star biographies and magazines. For some unfathomable reason, this did not prevent me form getting an education, studying literature. I am sure I haven't read 40 000 books in my entire life, not even close, and I'll not get anywhere close to that in what's left of it. But still, I think I can appreciate Dylan and his contribution (I really, really like some of his songs and lyrics) and put them in perpective. The impact he had on popular music is incredible. But then again, I do not think that that's what the Nobel Prize for literature is about.
Honestly, I can think of plenty of songwriters who are just as good or better. Leonard Cohen comes to mind instantly. I can also think of at least a dozen French songwriters who are, in my opinion, as good and/or superior to Dylan. Very few of them if any I'd consider Nobel prize material, though. And then, there's actual writers, in every language and every country. The only advantage Dylan has on them has nothing to do with literature. Can a pop star die without people creating a petition to have a star named after him anymore, can a lyricist change the way we write lyrics and be appreciated for his contribution even if he's not nominated for a Nobel prize?

Now, who knows what's going on ... she was finally able to get his remains taken to Lisbon and he got an honorary burial, and mom's spot next to him is reserved (she's 95 now!), but the sad thing is that not a whole lot has been done about it as far as I know. And I doubt that a government that is not known for appreciating the arts, will do anything about it, but that's as much as I know. There were a lot of things in there that I wanted, like the large quantity of books on film and theater, but my mom would not allow them to be removed, or taken. So, off they go to heaven knows where ... isn't it typical ... literature ... and the arts ... get buried! It's just hard to talk about those things even in a place like this, because the respect side of the arts and literature (or painting or music!) is minimal, other than the pop songs that get defended. History, has had a lot more than just songs, but no one really knows about it, or has created a conceptual theory so that their appreciation of the pop music also comes in line with the rest ... it's like the rest doesn't exist, and in my estimation that is really naive and sad. I just don't like to think that folks here keep thinking I'm just being a jerk when talking about a lot of this music and work as ART ... not just a song ... and the folks that I end up fighting, always seem to be the ones that have least ... to discuss ... about the arts themselves and their history ... you don't have to have the knowledge ... you just need the respect for the human ability that it took to "create" ... and where it has taken us after all these years ... to be stupid? You have an odd quality of missing the point completely for someone who is perceptive enough to know and understand anything about the arts. Or perhaps I need to be more blunt so that you might understand - reading into things and discovering things that simply aren't there but suit your agenda is not a sign of higher perceptive abilities. The whole library is now in Lisbon, and i wish I knew what they plan on doing with it ... as it will probably stay in the crates for centuries and get buried by the next tsunami! Who knows. Originally mom wanted our house in Lisbon to become a museum, but that fell through with no financing, and the house had to get sold. This is indeed a sad state of affairs. Doesn't mean that punks are wrong, but most of them were fake and then some ... !!!!! That is wrong!
Again, I think you are forcing your own views upon us for whatever reason. I see a place here that's full of people dedicated to the arts in various forms. The reason people give you a hard time is that you consistently act like you're the only one here who takes music or film or literature seriously, which is just preposterously silly. And the fact that you insist on believing this reflects poorly on you as a person of intellect. Let me see if I can find the words - you seem to think everyone else is completely illiterate and stupid when it comes to arts. Personally, I'm actually interested in what you have to say about certain things, but you completely undermine yourself and your own credibility when you constantly belittle everyone else as inferior because you've apparently convinced yourself that everyone else here only listens to Top 40 and has only ever read a book with pictures in it. And please don't respond by talking about your background as that completely misses the point - that a number of other people here also have a background in arts, literature, film and most especially music.

I just gave away over 3,000 of my own books in June before I moved. No choice, I couldn't afford to keep storing them in boxes that weighed about 125 pounds each in a storage unit that was costing over $220 a month! As for comic books, if I'd had any to save, I bet they'd be worth a lot more than the books! By the way, did you hear about the scholar who shot an arrow into the air and missed?

Then to bring it back to Dylan's work, the only words I can add at this point belong to Bob: I can’t even touch the books you’ve read
If one knows its source, I would say that there is more than one way of reading into it here. I decidedly prefer the less superficially obvious one.

Hi, Maybe I am not as "deep" as I seem to make it look like, and definitely not as well educated in the arts, as I would like to be. However, I seem to be one of those folks that "remembers" all those things he saw, even as a youngster ... how the heck do you think I felt at 18 watching Ravi Shankar and Yehudi Menuhin in Chicago, and in the same day in the afternoon, seeing Richard Kiley in "Man of La Mancha" (not the same as Bapu's Man of dah munchies!!), and a month later getting his head beaten up in Chicago at a park that a certain band that was really good in Woodstock, did not show up and got the crowd excited. Or before, or later, catching Andres Segovia ... and he breaks a string, continues playing and at the end of the piece he apologizes and asks if it sounded alright ... and I swear you would not even noticed a string broke ... Maybe I separate Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, YES, Tangerine Dream some from many of these, but in the end, at 66, the only thing I can see is ... some folks are being remembered a long time (and this goes for film, also!), and their art was SOMETHING SPECIAL ... but we seem to only be able to look at these things as a rock song ... it's the music, the sound, the feel, and the PERSON of that time and place, and as such they will be remembered as the art of that day, and decade, and likely century. Now, I can make jokes, bad or otherwise, about Elvis and Bob, but really ... I respect writers and folks that continually work and create things. They may not be perfect, but they keep on going, and Picasso and Dali did that, as did many writers and many artists and composers. To me, all the stuff that is just the "voice" of my generation ... and some of you always try to make me feel guilty and not a part of that generation ... because of my words! I can't help thinking that the only reason for it is because there is a lack of ability in articulating some of those words? To me, it is all art, and I respect it. I may not care for one band or another, but I respect their ability to do so. Bob deserves his award, and more importantly, than anything else, is that the Academy is FINALLY recognizing that the voice of the word and the written word, is almost the same, and deserves recognition ... and this is massive, for the next generation and choices. Today's "writers", are as diverse as "songwriters", and for crying out loud ... that is a GREAT THING, even for all you folks trying to create something. I needle Craig and Bapu, in jest ... not as an insult. They have my respect in many ways, and Bapu specially due to the amount of work that he has shared with us. AND, btw, there is a new set of quotes from Bob, and it is not the pair of words used before at all. It's very appreciative of it all, and I hope he goes and says thank you and give his generation (and OURS) a nice pat in the back. It's all we're missing, and like the original movie ... you've done a nice job ... with a pat on the back!
