Nice work and great song idea with some nice riffs, HOWEVER: - song is drenched in verb. Less is more. - mix and master your song to be bigger. When I say this, I'm not referring to a brick wall master, that's just louder. I mean bigger. The song should have heart and right now it sounds as fragile as that butterfly. - be judicious in your use of fx. Less is more. - this song should be big and warm. The bassline should be distinct. Your vocals should lie on a warm queen-sized bed with down pillows, but right now they're on a futon. :-) I don't say this to song bash, in fact, quite the opposite. I think this is a good idea that can be massaged into a great song. With a little attention to mixing/mastering, you and your lovely wife can set that "Butterfly" free. Cheers, RKS

Cool job capturing the vibe of the lyrics with a really atmospheric arrangment.   I like the harmony in the choruses a lot.  Your wife has a nice voice too.   I am not listening on the best system so take this with a grain of salt but the low end seems light on the kick/bass guitar.   a little push there might warm it up and balance bettween the high synth parts.   Thumbs up!

    Hey Daryl
Another GREAT tune.  Everything about this song from the writing to the performance is excellent.  I really like Verb/Delay used in this piece and the vibe it has given the mix. The piano and that one guitar riff, very cool.  Is that you playing the piano, nice ?  On my end, I'm with Chuck on the mix.  A real clean sound, good separation but could use a smidge more low end.  If I had to nit-pick it would be the lead vocals being so dry compared to the rest of the mix. IMO they need just a touch of space some air. The effects later in the song used on the vox are spot on excellent choices.  Man, you are on fire. This really is a GREAT piece of music.  Give some of that KUDOS to your wife.   Looking forward to your next piece.

Lovely song - I agree with others that there's a lot of reverb, but I think it works well. I'm trying to figure out what the vocals are missing because they sound quite plain and flat compared to the rest of the mix - maybe they're just lacking the same amount off reverb as the rest of the mix? Are they double tracked?

However, those are nit-picks... the song is brilliant, great job.

    Cheers,
    Terry.

great song Daryl, the lyrics suit the tune perfectly, and the female BV give the chorus a bit of distinctivity. mix is lovely and open, yes a little more bass may help but not too much. kinda reminds me a bit of Slowdive. awesome.

    Daryl1968 (ITYRN),

    Very cool tune.

The verb is bit too strong for my taste but then if I heard it dryer it may not have the same impact. Mrs Daryl1968 sounds real good from here.

The kick could use some more ooomph* since a lot of the bass is played in upper the register. And I would raise the bass 1 or 1.5db.

*maybe more compression but certainly more 60-65Hz boost (or replace the kick with a fatter sound?).

    Hi Daryl
Really really like this....kinda right up my alley stylistically. Reverb raised my eyebrows at first but I think I've come to the conclusion that you're using it as an artistic choice rather than a mixing tool and I think it works pretty well.

    Really like this one...

Nice song, agree with a lot of what has been said re reverb and bottom being a little low.  Just tried a little simple EQ on my desk with it bringing up the bass and taking some off the top helps.

    Thanks for sharing.

I like it a lot - only listening on lappy so will trust the other comments re bottom end, but the reverb suits the song/vibe just fine for me.

This is a lovely song that is well written and performed.  The reverb doesn't bother me on this piece.  I see it a a flavor which suits the style of this song.  I agree that a bit more low end would be welcome and push the vocals up just a bit to contrast with the reverb.  Yet, I like it as is.  This is one song that I definitely want others to hear.  Very well done.

This was really good, I enjoyed it. It seemed like there may have been too much verb on the track or maybe the drums in the begining. Then when everything kicked it, it seemed to fit.

There's a lot of panning going on here, but it seems to fit.

I also noticed the filtering on the mix/vox.

And things seemed to move as I listen. Left to right, and near and far.

You know? This was really "really" good.

    So well done. 10+

Wow - thanks for all of the comments
Kson - thanks for the nice comments - the reverb is intentional and I suppose is a matter of taste.
ChuckC - thanks - I will tell her lovelyness that you liked her singing
Drumstixkev - thanks for your enthusiasm and comments
Scottytunes -  HA - yeah she had a cold that day :)
Purple Rhapsody - thanks for the song comments - I think the vocals are missing a singer - not really my forte. I'm trying to learn to 'sell' the song.
    mgh - thank you - I appreciate it - awesome - wow :)
Bapu - thank you sir - yes the verb is an intentional thing for atmosphere - see general bass comment below
radio - thanks - the verb thing is intentional and I suppose a matter of taste. Hopefully this doesn't sound arrogant, but I am creating stuff that appeals to me and the verb on this one does :)
    old55 -  thank you sir
    Strummy - arsetastic - cheers m'dears
Razorwit - thank you - yes you totally have it - the wash of reverb and the dry vocal in the verses was/is totally intentional. I realise the production is very stylistic and not to everyone's taste but it is to my (and yours by the sound of it)  taste :)
Wookie - thanks for using your auto translator today - it saved me getting the Wookie > English dictionary out. Thanks for your thumbs up.
Paulo - cheers - bass is going to be fixed soon.
Lynn -  thanks - I'm glad you get the reverb thing :) Can I just say that you are a great contributor to the song forum - always there to give constructive advice. It doesn't go unnoticed.
notnat - thanks - high praise - I appreciate it
    bandontherun19 - thanks you very much - 10+ ! (I'm hoping that's not out of 100) :)

BASS PROBLEM ADVICE PLEASE - the original mix actually had PLENTY of bass - I was really happy with the bass line and IMO it really adds to the song. When I uploaded the mix to soundcloud, it sounded great except the bass - it hard a weird 'warble' to it. Everything else sounded fine. Tried to upload a couple of times and same problem. So, thinking it was too hot, I remixed with less bass.
If you listen real close through decent speakers, you can actually hear there is still a bit of a wobble (not intentional) to the bass.
Anyone had this problem and know a way around it?
The file uploaded to Soundcloud is a 16 bit Wave file.
    Cheers

Not Sure but Ive been noticing similar on SoundCloud and other upload sites as well.  Sounds great until I do the upload, It appears intermittently. Sometimes the same song will sound great or as it did on the monitors or cans and others will be a worbly muddy mess. Ive been beating my head with it and was wondering why it changes from time to time. I can burn a cd and it plays great or transfer to iPOD or other computer and sounds great, upload and back to fighting the battle if it will make it a mess or upload good.
    Scratching my head here too.

Hey loved the song, I was captivated in it.
Kind of a David Bowie/Ziggy Startdust vs modern day pop mixed-Hard to explain but I loved it

I think the choice on the amount of verb/wet mix on it was great for the song (IMHO)

Nice song Daryl.  The atmosphere that you set-up really complements the lyrics and captures a unique airy sound.  The arrangement is excellent and being a reverb addict I think that what you used is perfect for the sound.  Your vocals are terrific -- understated, reflective, and hallelujah don't oversell the song.  You wife does a good job on the harmony --- she has a nice voice.
    Well done  -- great song.

This is very nice tune. Lots of nice production work. I think the reverb works fine once the song kicks in, it does seem kind of drenched in the beginning, though. The bass lines are nice and work well providing a nice foundation for all of the intricate  vocal work. Percussion sounds really good as well.
