It's been six years since I found this forum and I have been touched by the warmth of all of my good friends here. It was just recently mentioned to me that I haven't presented anything for all of you to listen to. I found a selection that was different than my usual songs that you might like. Enjoy. https://soundcloud.com/sir-pistolpete/primal

Welcome to the forum Pete. Finally. The song is not bad. The drums could have used a bit more variety and texture. They got a bit monotonous at the 1:30 mark and I was by that point wanting more. The change up with the drums would have forced some changes in the over all soundscape by necessity so that would kill two birds with one stone. Mix wasn't bad but it sounds generic. Pre-set. Keep em coming.

Kind of an interesting piece, really. Sorta' like jungle trance or something... very different, and I like different. Thumbs up from me.

I agree with some of what Fox says, but the piece is short enough that it's not cloying. I'm glad you've arrived. You can build on this piece, if you so desire, but I'm looking forward to hearing more from you. Bravo.

Well, you are hyper critical of everyone, so I'll return the favor. First off, I have to say I was surprised at your song, not what I would have envisioned coming from you (based on your comments of course), so that's a positive. On the negative; after about a minute + I was losing interest, as while an interesting concept, it basically doesn't go anywhere. I would suggest coming up with a bridge, or adding a melody, something to keep the interest up.

I'll put my review in the same way you do: Your sense of rhythm is fine, but there is nothing else to the song, if you can even call it that. My friends in Nashville would laugh at this track, as unprofessionally dull and poorly mixed as it is...a boring melange of break beats and late 90s scratching.

All that needs to be said can be found written above. It is noted that you said Pistolpete I found a selection that was different than my usual songs that you might like. Perhaps a sample of your more normal songs would be good for a comparison. Thanks for sharing.

It Is What It Is ~Robby Robbins Not my favorite genre. Not sure what the point of it is. But it sure seems like it needs a lot of work to become more interesting and modern sounding. I'll be back in six years to hear your next installment.

I'm reminded of the time when a work colleague of mine in the 80s discovered I was a musician (well, bass player ) and told me he was singer and guitar player. I asked if I could hear a song of his and the next day he brings in a cued up cassette for me to hear. I'm listening and I'm thinking not only is he a good country singer but the production is top notch like something out of Nashville. He asked me stop the tape after the song. And as I pull out the tape (with a peel off label like they had in the 80s) I notice the other side of the cassette is pre-printed with about six song titles and is headed by <insert some 80s B-level country star name I cannot remember anymore> and I ask him about it. He says "Oh I did not have any more blank tapes so I copied my song onto this cassette." I'm not accusing pistolpeatmoss of anything like that. Just thought I mention this funny song related story here.

Well you certainly do like the scratch record sound rhythm thing. You can dance to it. If I were 23 years old and at the club dancing with a bunch of half naked girls getting drunk I would like the song a real lot. But since I am 42 years old and my favorite music is Mellencamp , Springsteen, and Bob Segar then I have to say ... Where is the melody and you musicianship skills on an instrument? Ehhhh. Keep the faith. You can do better.

The 90s called. They want their generic corporate hip hop DJ back. You seem like a smart enough fellow. You can do better than this. Songs need themes and structure. This was an intro/breakdown that went on for way too long and didn't build into anything meaningful. Layering tired, overused cliches does not a song make. The production values are decent but without substance that means nothing. There is no real melody or harmony at play in this whatsoever which even in the chaotic style of hip hop this is modeled after will usually incorporate. You need a solid bass line to drive the tune and some kind of vocal or instrument track to draw and keep the listener's attention focused. You threw the kitchen sink at this but forgot the plumbing. Hope this helps.

I like it. Can you tell me how you are getting the scratch sounds? Is it actual dj spinning on a disk or LP or did you have some cool sampler type solution? I thought the textures stayed fresh throughout. What's next?

Is this a remix of Pink Floyds - Several Species of Small Furry Animal Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict? I agree with Wookiee in that something else to contrast this with would be useful. Somebody said a sentence which contained the word Soundscape. That sounds all posh, and grand so it must have stirred something up somewhere. Well done.

Well, as much as I would like to join the PP beating here, I would be being dishonest if I would say I didn't like it. For a percussion track, I found it exceptional. I would like to hear a few melodic instruments in there. A steel drum melody here and there would top it off nicely. I found all the different percussion sounds and changes to be very artistic. As for the mix, JMO but I've always held HH and electronica to a higher standard of production. The sound here is not bad perhaps a good mastering engineer could get the clarity and punch lacking here for this kind of music but I think a bit more eq and compression work would make it shine. I think you still owe me and Strummy a tour jacket. Cmon man you've been gone for years fill us in.....Have you moved on to another DAW or are you still waiting for Cake to fix the driver so you can record in Guitar Tracks 3 with your realtek card?

Maybe I am wrong, but I noticed a slight shift in Pete's tone on a critique... it was actually constructive and not at all biting. Perhaps he now has a bit of a better understanding of what it means to put yourself on the line (though I am not sure it was before or after he posted this). I want to give him the benefit of the doubt. Hope I am not being foolish in that. FWIW a few weeks ago, somebody posted a song that was done using their onboard realtek. It was surprising as it was no worse than many others here. So it can be done (and I have always agreed with Pete that any sound card should work, even onboard).

foxwolfen FWIW a few weeks ago, somebody posted a song that was done using their onboard realtek. It was surprising as it was no worse than many others here. So it can be done (and I have always agreed with Pete that any sound card should work, even onboard). Jonbouy and I have always maintained that for mixing, any old sound card will do (given decent listening device; i.e. headphones/speakers). I even released at least one iteration of two different CHB songs that were mixed on my old Dell Laptop (8.5.23 SONAR days) with an on board soundcard when I was away from the main DAW *. And that is because the export DOES NOT go through the sound card it is truly ITB. It's when you get into recording that the on boards can be troublesome due to latency, quality and limited inputs. Typically the onbaord cards have terrible AtoD converters just decent enough for simple speech (IMO). *When I got back to the MAIN DAW I then moved the entire project from the laptop to the DAW and exported again. Guess what the null test showed be (audibly)??? No... go on, guess. OK, I'll tell you. The two files were the identical.
