CAN ANYONE SUGGEST GOOD BRASS/HORNS AND GUITAR DXI'S?

Hi,

Can any one suggest or reccomend good quality brass/horns and guitar dxi's? I'm looking for something on the line of an Earth Wind and Fire type horn section sound and Clarence Clemmons type sax sounds. As far as guitar goes, I have very good acoustic sound but lack in the clean and distorted guitar sound.

Free would be good but I'm willing to pay if the dxi's are good.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks very much.

There are a few good horn VSTi products out there, but nothing cheap... Depending on your needs, Zero-G's "Phantom Horns" is cheap, downloadable, and might be what you're looking for in terms of style:

    http://www.zero-g.co.uk/index.cfm?articleid=155

These are prerecorded horn section riffs as individual WAV files... typical tower of power, EWF type stuff, plus IIRC some trumpet and sax solo phrases. Check out the demo and the sample WAVs. Section riff WAVs are not ideal, but a decent VSTi giving you comparable quality will run 3x-5x.

Is there a particular style you are working towards?

There are a handful of libraries that might be useful if they match your style - none of them are terribly inexpensive...

Chris Hein created a Soundpack for the Kore2 Player - I'm experimenting with it right now, and I like they way it works and sounds

I have made pretty good use of both BOB from SampleTekk and Quantum Leap Brass, both for GigaStudio... both are slightly more comfortable in settings such as orchestral or maybe big band work.

The Phantom Horns or Psychic Horns library (embarrassing but I never can remember which) are from my Akai S900 days, I imported them into GS and still use them - now I will have to import them into whatever I end up with next, but I will.

Laugh if you must, but I find that I also go back to the Chicago library that was created for the EPS/ASR. Again I have translated them for other sample players, but they are quite usable for rock and roll.

I too am still awaiting the perfect brass library!

I am a guitar player, so I have very little experience with guitar libraries. One that I do sometimes use is Jeff Baxter's library that was originally created for the Akai S900. Some pretty tasty licks!

For Guitar I love Real Guitar and Real Strat by Musiclab, they'r not free though and I don't know if they'r dxi, I use 'em as VST's.

Sadly very reduced studio equipment as it is... ASUS G750J, 8 gb RAM, Win8, Roland Quad Capture.

Thanks very much for all of your suggestions. I will try to evaluate each and see if it fits.

The sequences I use are everything from Big Band to Chicago to Earth Wind and Fire.

Anyway, I will definately experiment with all of your suggestions.

To achieve the most realistic results with such expressive instruments as brass, reeds and guitars, it's best to use loops instead of samples. The problem is, you'll have to write your music for the loops and not vice-versa, which is a big drag on creativity. Unless you're so lucky to find exactly what you need. Which hardly ever happens.

There are, however, sample-based products that mimic the way the real instruments work through "artificial intelligence." You will not get the same realism as with loops, but they beat straight multi-sampling any day. Here are a few examples:

Sample Modeling's Mr. Sax T (Tenor sax. Needs an expression pedal or breath controller.)

Sample Modeling also has similar products for baritone and alto:

Sample Modeling's Mr. Trumpet (Also needs exp pedal or BC.)

    MusicLab's RealGuitar (acoustic)

    MusicLab's RealStrat (electric)

+1 for Chris Hein Horns - they sound great and are very versatile for non-orchestral music.

    Scott,

The CHG sounds awesome.  Do you know whether it supports Vista x64?  Any concern with it working as plug with Sonar PE 8.5.3.?

    Thanks

I'm using the NI Kontakt Sax and Brass sound pack (which I think is the one wst3 is referring to) with the free Kore Player. Pretty good for $59. The big band harmonization stuff in there is pretty cool sounding.

    Hey Bob,

I haven't tried them under x64 yet. However, since they are based on NI Kontakt (they use the Kontakt Player) and Native Instruments supports 64-bit, I would think they should work fine. You might want to contact Native Instruments to find out for sure though.
