CAN'T RESCAN VST PLUG-INS FOLDERS
Hi folks. I'm having a strange problem here. Only the plug-ins that came with Sonar 8.31 Producer and a couple I've installed since are showing up. I've since aquired many more, including free ones from SSL, Voxengo etc. Sonar is not re-scanning VST's on startup, even though I have all three checkboxes checked in Options, Global, VSt Plug-Ins. I've tried adding folders to the list, pointing specifically to folders I've installed underneath the standard Cakewalk\VST Plugins, but no luck. Also, the Scan VST, Clear VST, and Folder Defaults buttons are all grayed out. I've checked in the Plugin Manager as well, and it's Scan button is also unavailable. I've tried removing all folders currently in the scanning list, disabling the three checkboxes and restarting Sonar with no success. So, how can I enable the Scan, Reset, and Folder Defaults buttons? thanks for any suggestions, Chris

You need to go into your plugin manager (Tools-Cakewalk plugin manager) and define the folder locations of the new plugins there. Then press vst scan. Dont do it in the global folder. Also, leave scan on startup disabled. There is no need for soanr to run a scan every time you start sonar. Just go into tools/cakewalk plugin manager every time you install a new plugin and define the folder location, it its not already and press scan.

Thanks Cjay, but that unfortunately didn't get me closer to fixing this. Inside the plugin manager, I have nothing listed under VST, whereas when I switch views to DirectX, there are over 100 listed. I tried adding a folder as you suggested. That appeared to work but my problem is I can't activate the scan vst's button, because it is grayed out, won't do anything when clicked, etc. Nothing I try seems to enable this button, or several others in the dialog box. Any other ideas guys? I'm not afraid to dig into the registry or ini files if there are things in them I should check and/or edit. I'm running 8.31 Producer on a Win-XP system. I tried reapplying the patch to 8.31 hoping it would restore some missing file or something. no luck. I'm enrolled in Berklee Online's course in Audio Mastering Techniques, so I really need to get all my plug-ins scanned and organized... Anything else you guys can suggest is really appreciated! I'm not new to computers, just to Sonar. Short of a complete reinstall, I'm willing to try just about anything at this point. Chris

I'm haveing exacly the same problem! I've just got myself the new Native Instruments Complete 6, but just cannot for the likes of me get Sonar8 to scan the files. Just like you I have checked all three checkboxes & also but the folder that stores the Native instruments dll files in to "VST Scan folder(s)" in global as well as in "Plugin Manager", but cannot click on the "Scan VST folders" button as it is greyed out. The Native instruments plugins are in the plugins folder along with the plugins that come with Sonar8 that work perfectly on the HDD but Sonar just will not recognize the Native Instruments no matter what. I have tried just about everything to get my new plugins in to Sonar8 but it just will not recognize them, it's driving me insane Surly there is an easer way?

I have exactly the same problem on my test PC used for beta/new plugins testing. However on my main PC there is no problem. What you can try is access the 'Scan VST plugins' button via the Options/Global/VSTplugins tab. This has the same 'Scan VST plugins' button as the plugin manager, but here, very strangely, it is not grayed out and works just as it should. See the pics. The first one shows the button grayed out, the second shows it working correctly. Must be an undiscovered bug?

Seven year old thread. I suggest you start a new thread and list your system spec in your signature. The plugin manager can be found under Utilities > Cakewalk Plugin Manager And welcome to the forum

http://forum.cakewalk.com/RESOLVED-Plug-In-Manager-Scan-keeps-crashing-m3518533.aspx Steve Cook walked me through all my issues last night (see the link to that thread). He explains succinctly what you ought to do and it is not the Plug In Manager way. Open Sonar, hit P, go to VST and click on scan there. If you want to see a log, hold Shift and then click Scan. All of my plugs are now showing up in Sonar, which feels very good and I only had to unlearn an old habit( using the Plug In Manager) Good luck. Michael

"Open Sonar, hit P, go to VST and click on scan there." Hi Michael, the problem is that the Scan button is disabled in preferences too. I can't press it. I try the manual scan option, automatic scan etc. and nothing happens. Thank's for your help
