CWBRN-40567 - real time track bounce or export hangs•
I held off posting this to see if I could find some kind of a pattern. Ever since updating to Jamaica Plains - I'm getting occasional hangs when I "bounce to track" or export an entire song to WAV file. when this happens - it just gets stuck with the "busy" icon. If I force SONAR to close, then reopen and bounce again - it will be fine. Then other bounces will be fine, until one time it will hang again. I just happen to be bouncing a song (multiple times after mix updates) and bouncing some soft synths to audio tracks - so I'm seeing this happen maybe 1 in 10 times - with no obvious pattern or repeatable "recipe". Has anyone else noticed this?

Check the first core of your CPU. Is it overloading?

I'll double check - but the CPU cores are pretty evenly balanced...

Hi cool,
It's under like you're seeing the same problem as me. There is no way to predict when it is going to "hang" (or crash) is there?
If this was caused by a plugins, it would happen every time - also latency settings etc shouldn't cause SONAR to hang one time, then work OK on exactly the same file...

Do you do fast bounce or realtime bounce?

I never do fast bounce - always real time. This has never happened until the JP update, and even then, it's only sometimes. The bounce goes right to the end - but then just hangs... Then - kill SONAR and reload - and the exact same bounce works perfectly.

Yes, real-time bounce is broken in JP. It is confirmed by many people (I've read it on Russian music forum). I never use it, so can't say more.

CWBRN-40567 - real time track bounce or export hangs

I submitted a problem report - CWBRN-40567 - but it doesn't really give you a chance to explain. Here is a further explanation of what I've found: Ever since updating to Jamaica Plains - I'm getting occasional hangs when I "bounce to track" or export an entire song to WAV file. This may or may not be a known problem - I'm just trying to make sure the CW guys know about it...

I can confirm that I've had this happen a few times since my update to Jamaica Plain. It's just as you describe, exporting a project to .wav hangs and fails . . . after a Sonar restart, the next export is successful. For me when it happened it hung exactly at the end of the project, and the resulting .wav file was invalid. My first thoughts were my system or the project were causing this, but if other Sonar users are noticing this, then maybe there is some new bug introduced ? I try to send a problem report (using Sonar's automatic problem reporter) when I get things like this happening, but I am always disconnected from the internet (Wi-Fi) when doing my exports, so the problem reporter never works properly ?

Not to poo poo the problem (though I can't replicate it), but why so many real-time bouncers? Don't trust Fast Bounce or using plugins that don't tolerate it or have External Inserts or other live input or...? Just curious.

Plugins like Omnisphere and Trilian (and probably anything that streams) don't really like like fast bounce - so I just do real time bounces all the time (whether I really need to or not).

Can't you freeze the synth?

Yeah - as a matter of fact - the synth tracks are all bounced to audio, and I was just bouncing (technically - exporting) the entire song to a WAV. To be honest there's really no need to do a real time bounce at this point - but no matter how you look at it, a real time bounce is easier on the system than a fast bounce ;-) so it should be less prone to "problems". I've never had this problem before JP, and since going back to Ipswich, it's been fine. When I was trying out using a MME driver (instead of ASIO) it rebuilt the AUD.INI file, so that's not what's causing it. To be honest, after I went back to ASIO, I did about 7 or 8 bounces and they were all fine. I was just about to report back to Cakewalk that it might be OK now, and the last bounce hung :-\ I uploaded a (big) bundle file - and the problem report is "under investigation". I do feel that others are seeing the same type of problem, and it's definitely something in JP -so I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of this eventually. I'm quite happy on ipswich in the meantime ;-)

This may not always be the case because a fast bounce can adjust based on CPU usage see http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3094164

Thanks scook - that is a new one for me. Hey, maybe fast bounces will solve this problem. It *still* never happens <= Ipswich, so it would be good to know what's causing this. Again, I'm pretty sure it's not just me and/or this one project. I will try some fast bounces though...

I believe there is a problem with real time bounce which needs to be addressed. That should just encourage you even more to try fast bounce. From what I understand, fast bounce is the preferred method and real time bounce should be used as the fall back when fast bounce does not work.

Well, I'll be damned!! I've just done 10 exports of the entire song - without any hangs. I tested the output WAV and it's fine too (as expected, I guess). FYI - the fast bounce wasn't really that "fast" - it took about 3 minutes for a 4 minute song - but I was never really interested in the speed I'll update the problem report - and will use fast bounce now, and see how things go. Thanks again for the referece, Steve, as I missed that, and it goes against my intuition...

a fast bounce can adjust based on CPU usage see http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3094164 This is the kind of stuff we should be hearing about - rather than how many more loops we can download this month. I'd never heard of this, and I wonder how many more things I've missed. I'm not blaming anyone (except maybe myself for missing this) - I'm just saying...

Usually this kind of stuff gets discussed when the feature is introduced and then rarely gets mentioned again. As I mentioned above it should be SOP to use fast bounce. It is the default. You had to actively turn it off to use real time bounce. There are only a few defaults I override and most of them are file locations.

That's the thing - I know I actively turned it off, ages ago, when Omnisphere and Trilian documentation said to. Then I figured Kontakt (which also does disk streaming) would probably benefit too. I always saw real time bouncing as the "safe" way to do it - but it seems things have moved on ;-)

I'm late getting back to the party, but the concept in the thread that Steve linked is exactly why I asked the question. Real-time, synchronous processes are almost always trickier to manage and more error prone than "offline" asynchronous ones. By way of a real-world analogy: Would you rather your boss dropped a new task on your desk every hour, and asked you to finish each in the next 60 minutes - not one second earlier or one-second later - or that he give you eight tasks at the beginning of your 8-hour day and just asked that they all be done by COB? Oh, and BTW, you can leave whenever you're done.
