Camel Alchemy users check this out
Camel Audio have released an update to the Alchemy player and it is an excellent update for those of you running the player only. An amazing browser has been installed. Also they have released a new set of sounds called 'Taste of Camel' and it is either $15 EUR or so or free to many existing customers. I got it free so I cannot complain. It is about an 800 Meg download. It represents 5 presets from every library they make (all 24 so far) so you can get a sense of the library. The sounds are free and amazing and even the 5 patches they give you are incredibly useful. Of course the mix pads give you endless variations and combinations. I am once again marvelling at the sound of this machine. It has to be one of the best sounding instruments on the planet.

After installing is there any way to tell which presets are from the Taste of Camel? I can't figure it out. (probably a chair-to-keyboard interface problem)

Hi there Dean. Well after installing the new browser I was a little confused at first but now I see it and it is very well thought out. Firstly any sound libraries you have installed will show all their presets so they will have quite a large number present. All other libraries will have 5 presets in there and they are the Taste of Camel sounds. In the Sound Library column you can just select a particular library and your preset status will show up. Make sure you have 'All' selected over on the far left column so you can see all the types of sounds that are in any library. If you only have Rhythmic selected and you select a library you don't have for example, no presets may show up. But that is only because there are no rhythmical presets in that library. Select Pads instead and you might see one or two sounds. Select All and you will see all 5 presets from the library you have not purchased yet. Great way to get a sense of how those libraries you don't have yet might sound. But the browser is great because if you have say three of four libraries installed you can now just audition all the pads from all of them now easily. What I don't like is the name of the sound designer is in a larger field and is a bigger font that the name of the library and the preset. That is a bit silly. It should be the other way around.

I've got the original free player and it is excellent - is it worth upgrading to the new one? - I understand from Camel there are no new presets in it. Is there a full list of the presets in the Taste of Camel pack anywhere - there is some general info on the type of presets included on the Camel site but not a full list. Cheers

my next purchase ....everytime i wanted to purchase i had to buy another (Diva, Trillian, Omnisphere ...) and planed to get komlete 9 ultimate ...but this synth is Serious !! Do the sounds integrate easy on mix or a headache to pace and mix ? (basically all i'm asking is : is it a producer oriented sound design ala Waves Element ....or a pure sound designer thingy .....fun but hard to integrate ?)

Yes Zo it sounds killer by itself and in a mix too. Very easy to mix in. Download the free player to test for yourself. It comes with a gig of factory sounds to get you started. Even if you buy the full thing the player will still function although you can uninstall it and just use Alchemy instead. But at least you can hear it in action now and for free. If you are not an existing purchaser as well buy the 'Taste of Camel' library for about 15 Euros. It has 5 sounds from every library they make (All 24 of them) and trust me they sound fantastic. You can keep and use these sounds for ever and it will let you hear the other libraries too. You WILL want to start buying the other libraries when you hear these sounds I can guarantee it!

I would have bought their bundle of alchemy (with all synth packs) *BUT* if it was cheaper for existing customers

You know, given that Sampletank3 has been so long awaited and still not here, I am really considering getting the full version of Alchemy. I have been playing with the Alchemy player and found out that in the player you can activate a fully function full version of Alchemy for 4 weeks. I have been experimenting with the full demo and watching the Groove3 video. I like Alchemy. I had been saving for NI's K9, but given it has had a price increase with no real new products, I may just jump on the Alchemy bandwagon. It along with Kontakt should suffice to solve my GAS attack. I know it is a sample based synth, but it is so easy to use and inspires creativity. Thanks for posting this about the Taste of Camel and about the buy one get one free deal on their sound packs. That looks like a good deal to me.

Thanks for the feedback. All seem like great possibilities. I like Dream Voices a lot - but it's very 'abstract'. There are relatively few presets where the human voices are discernible as such. Definitely not a choir or ensemble type soundset at all. Think pads, textures and even percussion with 'something' unique about them. Ghost-like, dreamy etc. Many thanks for the info and good luck with your own hunt -

I own his Kitnetix soundset for Chromaphone, and he makes an appearance in Dream Voices (Alchemy) and other soundsets as well. But Steamworx.......... is.......... stunning.

Well Brando thanks for the tip. I decided to go for the two for one deal and bought Steamworx on your recommendation and man I LOVE IT!!!!! OMG! I have got a decent collection of ambient pads and things and thought rather than getting another one I decided to go for Steamworx too. You see having a Taste of Camel already pointed me to the fact that library would be serious and it is! What I also like is all the one shot sounds you have too. Although the grooves are amazing it is very cool to get into your own. The mix pads though serve up endless variations on the grooves which is quite incredible. I also got Biolabs Dark Space as the free one and it is amazing too. Very cool. I am right into Arp Dimensions though I must admit. There are some serious arp presets in that library. Alchemy has to be one of the best sounding things on the planet, every time I hear it and play it I think that.

Hi Jeff - Glad you are also enjoying Steamworx. Selecting a soundset can be very subjective, so I was a bit concerned that someone might go by my recommendation and feel differently about the set. As you pointed out - I think Martin has done a great job of using the remix pads to full advantage - and the sounds tend to compliment each other so well from pad to pad.

The way I feel about Alchemy is that absolutely any of those libraries are going to be great. Really they all excel in certain areas. I could tell from Taste of Camel that Steamworx was going to be one to get and and I am very happy I did. I love the Arp stuff too in that library. Biolabs Dark Space is fabulous too believe me. As well as things looped to form interesting rhythm patterns I also appreciate having all the one shot sounds so you can sequence your own loops and make them any way you want. That is very cool. It is important to have all those sounds both ways. The thing is to not rely on just those loops to be the music but rather to use them as a basis to build other things on. Or it's good to drop them in between your musical ideas. It is cool to take the loop away once you have built the rest of the music. There are so many ways to use those loops too. Like using the mix pads in a very controlled and rhythmical pattern manner yourself. Move those pads in a hip way and record the movements as well of course. Editing the movement of the pads is interesting to do too. I love the new updated browser. They make it easy installing libraries too. Alchemy has such a nice sound coming into your final mix. I don't mind it's reverb either. What I recently discovered though is playing something the Roland JD800 along side it makes for a very cool combination. A sound like 'Ting Dynasty' (JD800 Factory preset) which is very clear sharp high tuned bell like patch and it sounds very real. Alchemy thrives having other great sounding synths around it. Once other things make their presence Alchemy can just either mould itself back into the music and your mix so well or smack you around the head. Yes I do like it, a lot. I have got some serious hardware instruments that sound amazing but Alchemy is right in there with the best of them and then some. It kicks serious butt. You could almost do everything with this one synth especially if you had the entire library collection. All that Cinematic library stuff and the Cinematic Impacts is amazing too. I am into a lot of ambient stuff and the pads in there are breath taking. I am really starting to get into using one or two synths at the most but maximise the use of them. Like I had to when I first started out with just a drum machine, one monophonic synth and one polyphonic synth. Had to make it all work with just those three things.

Brando, have you (or anybody else) tried working with the ADSR's, specifically the attack, in Dream Voices to make them more choir-like?? To me, some of the patches in the demo have a bit of a "Munchkin" sound. Methinks I'm gonna go with the full Alchemy and Steamworx, Luftrum, Himalaya, Planet Earth and 1 other. Thanks to all for the input. Tony

I have occasionally thought about getting the full Alchemy player, but thought that $249 was a bit steep. I seem to recall that it was on for $149 a number of months ago, but I passed on it then as well. But now, there are some options to consider here. [The following calculations are all based on selecting libraries that are priced @$59.00.] Option #1: If I buy one get one free, that'll give me 2 [$59.00 value] libraries + Taste of Camel - for $59.00. Right away, that drops the price of Full Alchemy to $199.00 in the cart for a combined total of $258.00. Or... Option #2: If I add Full Alchemy to the cart first, [$249.00], it includes one free library [$59.00 value] + Taste of Camel, technically making 'Full AL' only $190.00. Then if I do the buy one get one free, I get 2 more as stated above. $249.00 + 59.00 - for a total of $308.00. Shameless Edit: But for just $9.00 more, we can even add a 4th library. I was just on the Alchemy site and now realize that I can get 4 libraries for just $68.00 on top of the purchase price for Full AL, so long as I add the Full Alchemy Player into the cart @$249.00 after choosing 1 [+ 1 free] libraries. Then if I add another one [+ a free one], the total reaches $317.00. So that would be 4 libraries + Full Al + Taste of Camel for just $317.00. [317.00 - 249.00 = $68.00] That's gonna be hard to say no to! Full Al + $68 for 4 [actually 5] libraries. Forgive my excitement & enthusiasm, but I love it when a deal works out to be really cool! Also, I've received $5.00 in Camel Credits already just by filling out my profile entries, making it just $312.00. Hmmm...What to do? What to do? I know! I'll ask Visa. Yeah that's it!!! The answer to all my problems - [or the cause of them all!] Jim
