The muted rhythm lick is the same 4 notes repeating through the entire song.  I just change keys around it and it makes for an interesting backdrop.

That's called 'ostinato' I think? Ed McG told me that

Beautiful piece Mark, really well composed, and the tone is perfect. Drums are great too, what are you using for those?

James

Hey James, thanks for the comments.

I'll be damned.  I've got some ostinato going on and I didn't even realize it.

The drums are Drums On Demand loops.  I find them to be a great product if you are a loop user.

Very "lyrical" line on this Mark. Seems like the guitar is singing, rather than just letting licks fly. Very melodic song. I really like your tone and playing here. Nicely balanced mix that lets the lead just shine through. You are doing some real quality stuff lately buddy.

Randy

Thanks Randy.  Funny you should mention the "lyrical" quality of the licks.  I had a real hard time finding my groove on this lead-wise.  I get stuck in the same old lick rut.  I thought the basic tune would sound good sung, so I tried to play some lead that would mimic the line a vocalist might take.  Guess it worked.

That really shows through Mark. As soon as it started playing I was thinking how "musical" the lead sounded. Made my imagination work a little bit, and the emotion of the melody being played came throuigh. I'm betting that if you think along those "lyrical" lines on future compostions, your playing and writing are going to take you to a new level on both counts. That's something I'd really enjoy hearing, as where you are now is pretty damn good. Just don't forget to throw an old rock singer a bone to howl at once in awhile.

great tune and playing quality is beyond reproach. mix sounds tight and clear. i'm getting some crackles on playback, almost as if you have a vinyl emulator strapped across the master buss? i'm assuming this is the soundclick player having an off day..

re the ostinato thing, i guess Ravels Bolero is the most famous example of this. it can be poring but you have enough dynamic and melodic variation that this is not even close to occuring here!

Hi there Mark

Your technique is flawless my friend - however, unlike others with genuine talent who decide to play as fast and as 'complicated' as they can all the time, you have the gift of being able to make the guitar talk. And you have the ability to do so slow or fast, and with as many notes as the piece requires.

A pleasure to listen to, for sure

Thanks Mark.  I hope the crackles you hear are from soundclick.  I don't think I'm getting them here, but my ears aren't what they used to be.

Hey big Steve.  I appreciate your comments.  I actually had one more note than the piece required, but I'm leaving it in hoping no one will notice.

Thanks Alan.  Glad you liked it.

Hey Mark, wow, nice mature voice in this. Great tone, (really great) it has just enough 'edge' to grab you but not get in the way (hope that makes sense). Great playing too, lots of feeling with a sense of ease and freedom about it, like you are really enjoying what you are doing. Major props.

This is KILLER! I absolutely dig the G's.....the tone, the playing. The intro guitar pic is so cute to me and sucks you right in almost like a classic rock love theme. The mix is awesome too! It's a little short; I would've like to have heard a longer length. The drums are okay, but prolly because they're just not at that sublime level as the guitars are. Supreme!

I really like the whimsical swirl phrasing in the left channel near the very end.

Hey Dena,  I really appreciate those comments.  Sometimes on my songs that have a really good hook I will make them a bit short to leave you wanting more.  The drums are loops so they are the best I can do since I can't program or play drums.

I listened to some of your tunes and they are great.  You have an amazing voice.

Really like that staccato picking Mark and the placement with it in the mix. Creative!  Gives this tune that slight, oriental, vibe. Very melodic and upbeat and a slight departure/different from your other instrumentals. Love it!!!!!!

Excellent, melodic phrasing and oozes with emotion.

How many beers 'n barbecue did it take to do this one? Only kidding man! :)

I know you said 'Moonbeams', but this reminds of a perfect day.

I hate using this word, but...Awesome!!

Goin' in for seconds.... oh yeah..smooth bass line too.

The solo guitar sounded great. Good melody, recording, and skill. It had just the right ambiance. Everything sounded so clear and strong in my busted speakers, and they are hard to please.

The ending faded at a good rate. What it went out on was a highlight of the song, which was a good choice to end on because it was something that I wanted to hear more of. I've always thought an ending should make me want to hear more.

I liked the upbeat feel of the song. Right from the start, the accompaniment was bright.

Mix-wise, I can tell you nothing. I'm not good at that.

Lovely Mark,

Nice lyrical playing and a very expressive piece.

You mention you are using audio drum loops and I noticed there are some snare glitches at 1:23, 2:54 and 3:12 (on the fade). Probably the same loop not lining up 100%, but does it matter in the context of this lovely noodling piece.

Of course not, but it might bug you a little now I pointed them out...
