Catching Moonbeams - UPDATED

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9445778

This is my latest offering.

It started just as a kind of study, but I kept developing it and ended up with this.

Comments welcome.

UPDATE:  I've reworked the drums and tweaked eq's on the mix to get rid of some noise and to define bass and drums better.

A touch of country rock or southern rock in some of the licks, very sweet.  You always have such great imagination when it comes to your riffs.  Love that muted rhythm, that is always is a nice touch (Grover Washington's Winelight is a key example where the muted guitar really establishes the groove.)

On my CWS the bass loses definition and attack, but otherwise a very nice tune that would have worked well to lay some lyrics on as it's very melodic.  And melody is eveything, (and timing.)

    WOW!
This is very nice Marc.  I'd never know you were in Mariachi Land by your style of play.

Dang!  Still listening, I love the tone of your guitar and the style of this song.  Very nice.

Thanks for the journey.  One of my favorites from you.

Thanks Daryl.  I really get trapped in the same old riff ruts.  I try very hard to break out of that rut and sometimes some nice licks come out of it.

The muted rhythm lick is the same 4 notes repeating through the entire song.  I just change keys around it and it makes for an interesting backdrop.

Thanks Rich.  I love mariachi music.  It must be influencing me in some way.

Thanks Tap.  The tone is pure classic strat into a Marshall.  I used some pedal compression and added delay in sonar.  The only eq'ing on the guitar is to roll off some lows.

I was reading the title as "Moonbeans" and thinking what's Mark up to now... until I put my glasses on.

The clarity of the bass/kick is striking (listening in the cans - ATH M50). Even more impressive as mentionned above, is the guitar tone you manage out of your playing. I do agree with one of your past comments about the tone living in the fingers. Production wise, it does not get much better than this. Bravo, once again Mark. A truly enjoyable listen.

Absolutely, no doubt about it, wanna get it done. Thanks for being so patient Mark. But I do have to admit, that I may be a little bit subconsiously intimidated, and everytime I hit that record button, I'm trying too hard. I know I've said this before, but I have no excuses left (having settled my string issues), come what may, I'll send you what you need at he end of this week.

    Imma praying now!

The tone is the highpoint for sure. Nice work. The title is fitting because it made me think of being at an outdoor festival in the evening listening to a band.

The cymbals were a bit distracting to me, but I may not feel that way if I heard the .wav file - MP3 encoding trashes many of my good cymbal tracks.

That is exactly what makes Grover Washington's Winelight work so well, that repeated pattern over the whole tune ties it all together.

    Very cool.

jimmyman - nice to see you.  Thanks for listening.

Dave - You're right about the cymbals.  They're harsh in the wave file too.  I need to sit back down with them and sort them out.

Daryl - I listened to Winelight.  Some amazing stuff there.

Sven - thanks for the listen.  I'm going to work on the mix a little still.

    Janet - hey, thanks.

Hey Gary - thanks a lot man.

Herb - that's a nice thing to hear.  I appreciate it.

Scotty - Yeah, the Sr. do put out nice tone.  Even though it is a powerful amp (60 watts) I don't need it cranked very high.  I keep the master volume around 2-3.  Very comfortable levels.

Very "lyrical" line on this Mark. Seems like the guitar is singing, rather than just letting licks fly. Very melodic song. I really like your tone and playing here. Nicely balanced mix that lets the lead just shine through. You are doing some real quality stuff lately buddy.
