Hi Mike

It's a long thread and I haven't read the entire thing; but for what it's worth, Band Hub is an ad hoc collaborative group whose catch-phrase is "Make Music Together". You may have heard of it!  The group's organizer (Don't have his name handy) is eager to try new approaches and to make the results better and more fun. I've received personal emails from him that genuinely seek ideas and feedback to make it better!

However, my limited exposure has me feeling that the quality of the tunes leaves somethings to be desired. Most I've heard are not even close to sounding pofessional.  Consequently they  are "all over the place" in quality.  You might think about approaching the organizer with the thought of his creating special collaborative segments within the overall Band Hub  complex  ... e.g., the "SONAR-borators" for those who have Cakewalk (or Cakewalk-compatible) DAWs.  I can't help but think that many on this forum like yourself would be anxious give it a go.

As I think about it, the idea could help everyone involved.  It would even possibly accelerate Cakewalk product sales inasmuch as the more members collaborate producing quality tunes the more apt listeners are to buy a DAW  and get more pro-sounding results.
Wa'da'ya' think?

I consider myself an "avid hobbyist" but have a pretty decent studio set up, and been working with music for most of my life. I am not a "professional," but enjoy doing/creating a lot. I started with CW in 1998, and have really enjoyed the new horizons this opens. The "collaboration capability" is awesome, but perhaps I am not sure where to look for SONAR users interested in such (the real question; the rest below is more rambling).

The reason this came to mind is I have friends who play music, even convinced a drummer to get a set of Roland TD9 V-drums, and yet even though they have watched SONAR and all of its plugins in action, only one ever got SONAR - and uses a work laptop that cannot run it properly (and all of these people do IT as their "day job"!! LAME). Their interest is more to play other people's work, and do so live, so sort of nips creating anything original in the butt. Sort of frustrating...

As a result, I have done most creation solo in my own time, but find I am much more creative with feedback/participation. I have not researched this, but with gobbler, soundcloud, etc., is there a good resource to find other musicians who use SONAR interested in collaborating?

Michael

I might have the long distance record for collaborating with another musician. My son recently moved to Japan (he used to play in my 5 piece band that also included my late father, 3 generations!) He plays Trumpet, Sax, Clar, Synth, and drums. We agree on a song (I send him the sheet music) and he sends me back Wav files. I add keyboards, Bass, Drums, and Vocals. Life is good!

Re: Collaboration (general community question) 2015/02/07 22:36:12 (permalink)
HAY Mettelus...Just like me, I am a hobby minded and action person,,,(I think),,,(there fore I am),,,,LOL.
And I can ramble better than you!.

But In seeking relationship in music, is to make it....I say.

Since my conception and understanding nil...but think I do...With music...(long and hard to do, when trying the PC or Mac sequencing and audio recording learning to get working)~ music making has dropped by 1/3...
I now troubleshoot mostly, and giving up on software based systems on PCs or Macs for some time before finding the 64bit platform.

I have also endeavoured to make a nice studio, in my basement....Lots of toys!

So...Something now has to come together...for I have spent way too much on this hobby since 1980.....Wink.

It is a dream come true for me, to have something working on the PC platform, as I have invested great amounts in making a good setup, with the best PCs of their time lines....And still have hair loss to prove.

So, as I see it, I have seen the rise up of the studio box systems from their conceptions into reality.

And it pains me to see, that slots and other inputs go south in time...As some things were expensive to get...and now lay unused, never worked right,.. when they could be a value still if the ports were still availble....I hate waste...and I hate wasting time....

So I am glad today Sonar came into my view, and adoption, just since x1 lite, then x2...till platinum....as it beats some of my older Daw software..and bug workarounds...and waiting for it to be resolved in the bakers care...at cost to do over and over...So you can understand...Why I ramble.

I have played with most Daws...Avid Protools Mpowered until 9-11, and still hope for to use when I get the bugs out of the systems, and understand the NEW MAC....I will then bring in people (already have) who cannot afford to make studio payments in to make music with the good ones of spirit....in like mind heart and soul..of kinships of PLAY.

Helping fuel the care of, by making friends who love to make music, and care for eachother....(it ain't easy alone)...and in that we all learn, and make as we go....nice and respectful musings of good will into life.

Is it not the best, to share, and Give what we can to others...in returns it makes a better world?
A concept I ponder more, as we move in time....The direction must be forward to brighter levels of mind, to play, and learn for free...and little to no returns in time, to fix mistakes, but as I see it, the Good Lord helps us, with forgivens , to allow correction for...doings if done any sins!.to try to not make any...if possible with wealth or working for, or (supporting in, or making of my own hand)..Give an share, is way better conceptual outlook for all in all by all...I say..lol!!

Now if that ain't rambling more so my muse...Then I do not know what is?.....lol....Stories man...I got some!

So yes I had a wink of the forums here, there is a place to put up your links and songs...
Just click on HOME tab, and see the other forums here....
Great place to hang with da boys and girls, once you get setup.....IF EVER.

So keep plugged in, and stay tuned to this bat channel for even more time based musings and such, as time goes ....tick tock...Forward or backwards, having fun as children should...is best....always!

I liked acidplanet 1997, and still got stuff of old up....but that place is so brutally dead to me now...I find it a metal block...So I moved on from Sony....

Anyhoot...if you are worried about compatibility ...Make stems (wav, ogg, or iff, Midi files) these should be able to be opened in all full DAWs.

So no worries when making them?...If moving them around to differing colabs/setup machines, with differing DAWs being used.
A standard must be set in at least this range, by users and collaborators, and or others in the colab, to allow all users of Daws to bring in or import the raw recordings, or record on the project.

Example: (..(instrument names/set bit rates, tempo, alignments or time lines) can be made hole (full tracks selected) , so all tracks(stems) start at zero, to keep alignments easy, when sending out the stems (audio) with instructions on what is what....note pad or word pad or other doc, for setup)...

Sound cloud/sky drive/gobbler...other sites for posting up data of various sizes is all that needs be, to share private content ...(snikers like a fool )...CD or DVD, or stick, sdd, or other media transfer is safer, if you need to keep it all hush hush!....wink.

So I think I have beaten Your Rambling...But lov a good tune to tuna melt!

To answer, You have to find the people who are on the same plain in mind of making....or playing in time , as you like , they like, as they like you like,....hope n Pray it comes to ...communion...and keep it in doing, and you shall find what the heart seeks...there you will find your rewards for doing! (what you put your mind to in doing, you gain knowledge in, and rewards are...when done with heart and good spirits....A resolve / comforter comes in to help in helping make with you.

But it is a long road...Stay open minded...Perfect You...and people will find You, and or vice versa....Time, life, destiny....Always coming and going in the flow of tempo set in motion!

So do I win the rambling ramble award?..

Best wishes.
And I will keep an eye out for your tunes, as you post, and when I have time....if you so link us...we will come...

Thanks for the words, mine are in the making...
Hope this new update to Sonar Platinum ..?...helps solve my pet peeves .

Gremlins in every machine, I have bought...(tainted by a entity of ill or Jin or something tied to it , to make it redundant or not work with others well, what has been bought throughout )...keeps me grounded to troubleshooting, as I add in more toys to make Music with.

The Ogre in all, is born through!...wink....I think they do it on purpose, to make need the wards, pills and bent doctors fees, and big pharma , and Secret Corp or as some would say, The time sucker of Qealth nd wealth making, and promoting being the entity of taint of all things being flawed or not perfect because it is put under that system of IDOL....before + and here after... as a symbolic Reference maker of LAWs broken.....But I have not found proof enough yet, to stop using it to make Play with...and not work for.....lol

Just jumping through time..but knowing well what it does to people when working for life, and never getting enough time to do, what we all love to do....Play!.....lol

Cheers!

Maybe, I'm the Los Angeles area and I collaborate with Jamesg1213 who lives in Scotland and have collab'd with my ex-bandmate (The CHB) Alex in the Netherlands.

Unlikely. There are several music collaboration websites operating, in which people from anywhere in the world work together on projects. I've worked with musicians from US, UK, France, India and elsewhere. It's no big deal these days.

I'm not claiming any records for myself. I'm just saying that international online collaboration is commonplace and no longer a novelty.
