Come one, come all, and join the 2HT project!

EDIT:  please post your tracks to your YouTube accounts so I can add them to the list

Hey, guys!  I have a new idea noodling around the web and I invite you to join!

Here's the orientation:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kNCYLcQBhc&list=PLCA0C1FD4099ED9DC&index=1&feature=plpp_video

It's a lot of good fun, and I'd love to see what my favorite online community could do with this idea if they took the ball and ran with it.  Please, give it a try and post up your own videos (sorry I didn't host this at a place with better sound quality, but I figured YouTube would get better exposure and let more people join in).

I'll add all replies to the final playlist so everyone can share their 2 hour creations!

So far there's two tracks up, more on the way every day.

Have fun :D

Straummy, it's a great exercise for persons suffering from a creative/writing/music making block.

Call me a cynic, but I suspect there might be quite a few that would take considerably longer - who's to know ?

If you take out the time you spent posting in between, your one hour tune probably took 12 minutes. Winner!

Actually, this kind of thing happens in visual art communities all the time, so why not in music?  For practice, for inspiration, whatever... Just to see if you CAN sometimes is enough.

    Tru dat.

You have a good memory mate

Although my best ever time for recording (not including writing) by far was when I laid down the backing track of White Riot for Troy. I vaguely recall stumbling in from the pub one night, firing up Guitar Tracks 3 and twatting on about three minutes of drum loops. It then took me literally the time it took to play two rhythm guitars, a likkle bit of lead and a bass track. Every track is 'live' from start to finish with no overdubs, so all in all it was done in about twenty minutes!

I sent it to Troy to see if he could sing to it and told him that if he fancied giving it a crack I'd re-record all the parts 'properly'. As it happened he said to leave it exactly as it was because he liked the rawness of the sound. So that's what we did.

What I haven't told too many folks here is that after having sampled quite a few pints of Brew XI I'd somehow convinced myself that I could sing, and so I also added the one and only ever Straummy vocal track. It is, needless to say, truly appalling!

If you sit down and plan to record something at a certain time and in a set amount of time, you aren't really being inspirational, and the exact opposite of spontaneous.

This exercise is a type of Crap Art, and as such, nothing incredible or spectacular is expected to come of it (though who's to say something cool won't happen?).

The main point is to have fun and exercise your creativity within a set of constraints.  If you don't think it would be a fun way to spend two hours, then there's nothing forcing you to do it

However, if you're like me and you enjoy a good creative challenge, give it a go.  You know, constraints often foster creativity.  I write music on a Game Boy from time to time, and that leaves me with a maximum of 4 tracks and 3-note polyphony, if I have all the tracks play at the same time.  It's limiting, yes, but that's part of the challenge!  Part of the fun!

I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with.  Post your tracks as video responses to the introduction video and I'll put them on the playlist so they can all go one after the other.

This took me 20 minutes or so to Create, mix and bounce http://www.soundcloud.com...-2/this-lady-theremine so in two hours, perhaps I could make something like this sound good - as long as I can use pre-prepared sound sets, which the rules said I could IIRC

A lot of composers only have hours to complete even more complex stuff for some deadline. The need to work fast and create something finished within office hours is becoming more and more common. I see this as an excersize to limit your self and make the most of what you can create within a limited amount of time and this seems like a cool way to get going and get heard.

Like Julibee said - all I need now is two hours. I still want to give it a go at some point

I take waste two hours just picking out a single synth tone.  I start off with an idea of what I want and end up noodling with most of the tones I find along the route to the one I really started out to find!  I never seem to finish anything but BOY do I have a lot of fun - lol!
