    Hey
Houston is way more awesome than most people realize.

Lots and lots of great paying jobs.  Extremely low cost of living.  No taxes.  More strip joints than any other city in USA - Including Vegas.

    10. New York, NY

    Arts & Culture Index: 100
    Recreation Index: 100

That would make it No 1 in my book. :P

A few years ago Vegas would have been on that list. If it wasn't for it's bad reputation. I guess any place is what you make of it. I'm suprised Denver isn't on there.

Yeah, I'd put Denver on that list (or Colorado Springs).

It's been a long time since I was in Houston, but it would not make my list of places I'd want to dream about.  I'd take Dallas and San Antonio before Houston.

Seattle's a good choice and Portland, OR is pretty cool in my book.

I think anyone who attempts to quantify "coolness" is automatically uncool. If had to describe what makes New York "cool," it would probably be something along the lines of the sum total of people, history, attitudes, sights, sounds, dialog, feelings, juxtapositions, and a billion other interacting factors that combine to create a "color" that cannot be seen. But yeah, let's just add up the number of bars and restaurants or whatever.

LOL I know, seems odd that I would be complaining about "tourists". But trust me, not all tourists were created equal. ;)

If you keep your right, don't walk more than two across the sidewalk, or stop in the middle of the sidewalk to take pictures of yourself, and if you're considerate enough move to the side when you need to ponder -  you're no longer a "tourist". You're a temporary resident. :)

There's 8 millions of us here, there's always someone behind you, there's always someone who'll walk right into your shot (that's one of my favorite sports actually. ;)

Thats the joy of it.  Aside from the things we remember and repeatedly enjoy, when you are in the OFS you can enjoy the same things over and over again because you forgot it the last time.

Isn't Houston still the murder capitol of America? Or is it Washington, D.C. now? I wonder if it factored into which was #1 and which was #2.

BTW, I'd vote for Homer, Alaska. Except it only qualifies as a "city" in that sparsely-populated state.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I'm exactly the same way. As a matter of fact, I'm really struggling with moving to the Kansas City area. I've been having panic attacks, anxiety attacks, can't sleep at night. And my wife is telling me I have to find a job down there asap as soon as we get moved down there. The roads are so confusing, everything is jam packed together, people are the worst drivers I think I've ever seen anywhere, and I'm from Jersey! The drivers from New York and Delaware used to drive me crazy but they got nothing on these morons. You get on the highway and you pretty much have to floor it or you take your life in to your own hands. People doing 90, weaving across 5 lanes of traffic, whipping you the finger.

I wanted to see how the new Google GPS Navigation app worked on my cell, so I didn't use my dashboard GPS the last time I went to Overland Park. It took me a different way I've never been before, all through downtown KC at 4:30 on a Friday. It was the 7th circle of hell. :(

Actually New York doesn't even come close to cities like Chicago and New Orleans when it comes to murder. Its murder rate is now a fraction of what it was in the 80's and 90's.

It's no real issue to me but the FBI’s Uniform Crime Statistics for the first six months of 2011 for cities with 250K+ population listed NYC with 277 murders, Chicago with 184, Detroit with 173 and Philadelphia with with 158. I guess I could dig for the last half of 2011 but I am too lazy. My personal memories of NYC are from the 60's and early '70s.

New York is one of the most densely populated cities, thus you are bound to see a higher overall total of murders. A fairer measure is the per-capita rate, and New York doesn't come anywhere near top. It's way behind the likes of Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Camden, Newark etc.
