Corrupt picture cache
My picture cache folder becomes "corrupt and unreadable" causing fatal exception errors and blue screen. Problem fixes when disk check does a scan and sorts out orphaned files from the picture cache folder then all is good until it happens again an hour or so later.
Any ideas what might be causing this?

Not a clue, but a few suggestions... 1.) Check your Windows logs for any error messages -- particularly disk errors 2.) Try disabling virtual memory (swap file) temporarily. If you have a decent amount of RAM, this shouldn't be a problem. EDIT 3.) Your hard drive manufacturer should have a downloadable utility on its website that checks the health of your drive. I would run that too.

Pic Cache has been unstable at times, especially in the past. Many years ago, I went ahead and created a macro file to delete all the files in the pic cache every night. With fast computers like we have today it's not important or even much if any a time saver to save the pic cache. So don't' be afraid to delete all the files in it, I do it every night.

Looks like it might be that simple. http://forum.cakewalk.com/Sonar-X3-Producer-Keeps-Crashing-m3402244.aspx

Yes. Just delete all the files. Sonar writes what files it needs there when a project is open. They can be deleted the moment Sonar is closed. No need to save them at all.

Thanks for the tips. Its a fresh OS install and new SSD...was happening on previous intall as well. Ive tried all suggestions except deleting cache after every use...been a long time user and never encountered this problem before. Does it require a fix in the next update maybe?

As a troubleshooting step and potential workaround, you could map your picture cache to another drive like a USB drive, SD card, network drive, or if you want to get geeky, a ramdisk.

I use Macro Express. I use the Pro version whish is about $30. Yet it could be the free version will do that. Also in the thread I saw something else that deletes them that I'm pretty sure is free. If you get Macro Express I'll be happy to give you the simple macro task file that takes care of it. I'm really surprised that Sonar doesn't have this feature built in. Although I'm pretty sure there is a setting in the INI file that you can specify the size of the pic cache and that will certainly help some to delete the older ones above that limit. Even this year V-Vocal was crashing on a project and deleting it's pic cache fixed it. Also if you ever open Sonar and you see a bunch of blank waveforms. Sometimes it's quicker to close Sonar and delete the pic cache and reopen it and it'll redraw the waveforms. Or you can select all the waveforms and redraw them.

Thanks so much. I'll give it a go.
I'm usually using v vocal on a clip or 2 so that could be a culprit. Hasnt been a poblem in the past but now that they've drop v vocal who knows.. And yes melodyne....whatever...v vocal is way better at some things
I've had many instances lately of picture files not recomputing.....but the empty picture cache fixed that.
I would really love to find the cause though.
Doesnt look very pro when the computer blue screens a few times a day in front of clients who are already questioning why I'm not on protools. It really isn't letting Sonar win over any new friends.

Blue screens could be corrupting the picture cache. Blue screens are indicative of hardware or driver issues. There may be information about the problems in the Windows Event logs.

I had to work hard to get a stable system and it took a while. There are a lot of things that can contribute and cause to instability even on a new super computer like I got last year from Jim Roseberry. I'd say check out the Windows Optimization Guide that Cakewalk put out on 3/8/16. I got it from the forum very recently. Do forum search or if needed I can get it to you.

Could be your hard drive has fragmentation or bad clusters where the folder currently sits. Try: 1) Running a manual defrag of the drive it's on 2) Move the Picture Cache to another drive or location and select it in Sonar Preferences

There's an exception to every rule, or perhaps you didn't notice what the OP said, but most advice I've read on the subject recommends NOT defragging a SSD and disabling the Scheduled Task in Windows that does it automatically. A "one off" for troubleshooting purposes shouldn't be a problem though. This is intended to be a PSA for anyone who is regularly defragging their SSD out of habit.

Thanks for the replies. I found references to my lynx soundcard in the window logs.
The problem may well have been me using the windows unistall when changing between driver versions looking for a stable one. I found further information from Lynx stating that you must use the Lynx uninstall to fully unistall the driver.
Had a better day today with no shutdowns and only one crash from instigating a V vocal clip...a known problem to me so i save beforehand to avoid any loss of work.
So all is looking good atm...only the small problem of UAD2 UI occasionally quitting moving, which is hopefully being addressed in another post.

V-Vocal has been known to do some strange things. Do you know the workarounds? Work in small 1-2 bar clips. After you tune it then choose "bounce to clip" this prevents V-Vocal from doing the strange things.

Also try a clean boot in Windows to see if it makes any difference.
