Let me ask you: What do YOU think of the sound? Lend me your ears (). Am I just being too hard on myself? The sound I am hearing is a very clear one - The Instruments and The Voice. Very pristine with an edge of precision, in relation to the sound quality/recording. Asking people here to 'lend their ears' and restrict their natural urge to review the structure must be 'killing them' - some have broken that barrier already. I'm sure many here are just itching to 'point the way' - but your restriction stands. As to you 'being too hard on yourself', I would say so - Yes. My perception is that you are meticulous in what you are doing and what you want to achieve, and are determined to do it come hell or high water. Now the crux of the matter is that you have an ideal in mind that you want to hear. Your reality (and lets face it, recordings are a huge smack in the face with reality) is not matching that ideal - no matter how much you change, adjust, purchase, modify, realign, and so on, and on, and on. As usual here in the forum, others have provided many excellent suggestions for where to go next with gear. My suggestion would be to take a step back, mentally. Mentally rest and relax into the creative process rather than spending your time striving to acquire it, or insisting on how it should be. The (mental) act of trying to force a result is separating you from making your own clear judgement of your work. Clearly you enjoy creating music and the recording/mixing process. Don't let 'perfection seeking' eat away at what you love doing and get so much pleasure and contentment from. Pete

It's definitely good recording quality, but the voice is a bit thin and has me wondering if you are singing with your chin up, as many do unconciously when singing high notes. It makes things worse. Pultec is a nice EQ to get a warmer, fuller voice. see here: https://mixedbymarcmozart.com/2015/04/02/classic-eqs-and-how-to-use-them-in-your-mix/That along with reverb so little that you can't tell it's on, should definitely help. And Melodyne to fix a few notes.

petec and frragnarsson- Thanks for "lending your ears" and your suggestions. petec-You are right about the meticulousness that sometimes makes me a bit mental. But as you say, I have to back off and "take a rest" JB

Also, I should've mentioned from the git go-The bridge section of the song starting with "The never should've cried....thru "leave me only..... "sounds weird intentionally. The first part has a flanger and the second has a phaser set to "old radio".

You might want to take a look at Ozone's Nectar 2 Vocal Production Suite - it's excellent. Everything you need for vocals all in one plugin. It's a real pity they stopped doing Nectar Elements as it was much cheaper, and everything you needed to get a reasonable vocal sound with one click. I upgraded to Nectar 2 VPS to get more tweakability, but I still sometimes use elements during the writing process when I just want quick results fast. M.

I'd argue against turd polishing. I think the OP John, is on the right track with thinking about input first. The best recordings are those that capture naturally what is there using suitable gear. This involves a good signal path and a good room. He's almost there, very close. I like what Pete is also saying, forget the gear, just enjoy your hobby and don't stress yourself trying to sound like something that might not ever happen. But John might even have all he needs on hand already and at this point if it was me I'd be spending a weekend trying each combination of gear in turn, lay down a dozen different vocal tracks each using the different signal path, pour a drink and sit back and listen. I can be a real shocker when you swap out your $400 LCD for a Beta 58 and go , wow, that sounds much better! ( By the way, I traded in the LCD for a TC Voice Live Acoustic )

I agree totally with the simple suggestions first. Closer to the mic for more body and I also have to say a lower \different key. The key of the song has much to do with how it sounds "sonically" as you put it. But you state reasons why you do not want to change the key. I disagree that all songs have to be in the same key to tell a story throughout the project. But obviously you don't feel that way. Why you would settle for out of tune notes instead of trying a different key is beyond me. I also do not think it sounds as bad as you feel it does. What jumps out at me the most are the "out of tune" notes mainly at the end of some lines. Feel free to flame me now for crossing a line when I am only trying to help.....

Agree with others here that it's not dirty or gritty, it's actually very clean and I would echo: - compression early in the signal chain, not a lot just a few db, CA2A would probably be my choice - parallel compression with your comp of choice. CA2A works well here, and blend subtly - fix the reverb, maybe try to eq the reverb to match the music and create the space you want. - add some harmonics, not very much. Maybe just the console emulator on the entire vocal path? Dave

My, what an attitude we have! Most people who have responded to this thread have respected my wishes and gave good advise without mentioning how they feel about the artistic integrity of the song! Why does it offend some of you that I don't wish a review on this song? I stopped putting up my songs for review because so many of you seem to think they suck and I got tired of hearing the same "your instruments don't sound real" and "your melody is too complicated, etc. You want me to apologize? Fine! I'm sorry I like "complicated" melodies. I'm sorry I have to use sample libraries that are very difficult to make sound real. I TRY! I'm sorry I like my music to be in certain keys. I really just wanted advise on clarity. I don't need or want advise on how to write a song. The main reason I don't post songs for review is people with superior attitudes like yours (stratman) seem to dominate this forum! My mistake for thinking I could put a sample up here for some technical advice without the damned flaming. I don't need any more advise on this. Thank you.

If you cannot give advise without this kind of attitude or resist the urge to "review" the song please do not bother offering. I'd appreciate it.

I certainly wasn't advocating turd polishing. Nectar 2 has all the same effects as other posts have recommended (compressor, eq, reverb), except they've got them all together in one plugin. I don't recall it having a turd-polish option ;) well, I guess the pitch correction *could* fall into that category. Sure, you can spend time learning how to use those effects properly over time, but having a bunch of presets and seeing exactly how the settings of those effects change the sound can help enormously, and is an education. Apart from that, having something that is "sounds better" during the writing stage does help you move on with the rest of your song. There's nothing worse than listening to something you're not happy with whilst trying to improve the rest of a song... then you can go back and tweak it, or re-record if necessary. M.

There's an artistic rather than technical thing here. I've not read every post here, so forgive me if I'm going over old ground. You say you're an older guy, and you say your voice is not what it once was in terms of strength and timbre. Well, ok. There's no reason why that voice can't be an artistically worthwhile and useful voice. It's the voice you've got, so make your peace with it, and perhaps even love it. This is one of my favourite vocal performances of the last decade. That it doesn't have the power and range of Life On Mars doesn't lessen it one iota. It's the authentic sound of an older guy making art from an older guy's point of view, with an older guy's set of tools. That can be a glorious thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWtsV50_-p4

Wow, John! That's profound and I agree so much. The video of Bowie in his older years almost brought me to tears. Watching it and listening reminded me a hero of mine, Gordon Lightfoot who even at the age of 79 is still at it. I don't think he records much anymore but he still tours. I was in awe of his rich voice in his younger years but to hear him today still brings me joy even though it's not what it once was. He is an inspiration to me as is David Bowie. I've also seen footage of Greg Lake just a few years before his death in 2016 singing "Lucky Man" and the performance sounded what some might call a bit rough, but he still put all of his heart and soul into it. Your point is so true. Age is something we as human beings have to endure, but it is possible to do it gracefully and not let it tear us down. A person who loves music as much as me (and you and many here) will always have a song in our hearts until our dying breaths. And it will always feel good to sing it as best we can, even when some of the younger kids start to tell us to "shut up". JB

Johnbee58 ...help me improve the vocal track SONICALLY. I've tried countless EQ plug ins and settings...
To find the best tones for a recorded instrument or voice, I often play back a section on repeat while messing with an EQ. I gradually work my way incrementally down the frequency spectrum boosting narrow bands and try to identify the best and worst frequencies. Finally I boost the good ones and lower the bad ones. The resulting sound may or may not be suitable for the song, but it will usually be an improvement compared to the original signal.

I do this. With both Waves Renaissance EQ and Waves SSL G Channel Strip. I can never seem to get a satisfactory sound. I tried the Ren EQ first with 6 mono bands. I save the settings that I think I will like and my folder of saved settings have so many it's ridiculous! So the latest attempt is with the SSL channel. I think what's offending me most here is in the midrange, but I've moved those bands all over the place and back again and it still sounds too damned harsh! In a few days (or weeks), after I've given my ears a sufficient break from this mess, I'm going to try applying Melodyne to fine tune the bum notes. Hell, I'm even considering trying to re key it, but I'll have to think more on that. I really feel as if I've reached the end of my rope on this particular project and it's time to move on to something else at least for now.

What Bitflipper said is exactly what I would also suggest. Your mic is fine, your room acoustics seem fine too... and your voice quality is great! The reason it is not fitting into the mix is the subtle pitch fluctuations in your vocal. They are intricate and the interesting style is quite meandering and thus not quite on pitch. Rather than investing in a new mic I suggest getting Melodyne studio 4 or Melodyne Editor. Once your pitch matches the beautiful electric piano, it will nestle into the mix perfectly and step up front. Then a little bit of compression and volume haggling on each syllable to flatten it out a bit and you are golden. As Bitflipper also suggested, doubling a few choice parts here and there (usually chorus) with your voice is also a nice effect too. Fix the pitch and the song will accept your voice as a lead instrument. Your vocal pitch is fighting the song's tonal center. It will not mix in and step up front until this is corrected. Best

Most people cringe when they hear a recording of their own voice. Do you know any other people that can sing? Invite them round and record them. That should satisfy you that there's not much wrong with your equipment and set up. As others have said I think you're being very self critical

For vocals, Melodyne Essentials will probably suffice (and its way cheaper). You only need Editor for polyphonic pitch editing, and Studio for multi-track editing. You can always upgrade if necessary. Kev999

+1 to this. I came across this video on youtube a while back - it explains it all EQ wise. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdDDVortvRU This guy's got other videos covering compression, mastering etc and all are very well explained. M.

This is SO true - I used to HATE the sound of my own voice, but in the end IMHO it's down to self confidence and getting used to hearing yourself. And actually in this context, polishing a turd (sorry Cactus, couldn't resist ) can actually be a good thing. I'm probably still guilty of this even after 30+ years of hearing recordings of my voice. I've got commercial recordings that I still cringe at (yet other's say it's great), but then some of my home recordings I absolutely love. I think a lot of people are over-critical when it comes to their voice. Johnbee58 - post more of your songs here, hopefully if enough people keep saying how good you sound you'll start believing it! Without sounding harsh... the track has zero production and no depth. The tracks themselves are clean and no amount of money will matter as you technically have what you need to make a fine sounding track sonically. COMPRESSION, Reverb, saturation, delay, imaging (of did I say COMPRESSION!) can all be added to even the simplest of tracks / songs to make them grab the listener and their emotions.

I'm going to assume when you say "track" you mean the vocal track and not the song. Correct? Please clarify. Because the vocal track already does have reverb and delay.

I may be wrong, but it sounds to me like much of the melody is in the region where the voice goes from “normal” into falsetto. And whatever the cause, it’s not so much straining to reach the notes as introducing a nasal quality that comes and goes which I think might be what’s sounding “harsh”.
I don’t think the problem is the technical recording quality, though at times the loudest transients do sound like they might have been recorded a bit “hot” and driving the pre-amp a bit. Or too close to the mic.
It might be worth trying re-recording the vocal, only singing quieter, more gently and with more “breath” in the voice, make the vocal more “conversational” and reflective if you see what I mean - text is a poor medium for describing tone....
Then applying some compression and equing out objectionable frequencies.

Well since you scolded me twice I must reply. I was trying to help J. I only added the final line because, I figured (and correctly I might add) that you would not see this how it was intended. I was NOT reviewing the song, I was simply stating that reaching for notes that may be out of your range would ALSO play a part in how it sounds "sonically". Won't bother you again, just had to state my opinion. Wrong or right, that was what I meant

To be completely honest, you have a very unique voice. This can be both an advantage and a disadvantage at the same time. More traditional voices are easier to mix because many of the effects are made to suit their processing needs. But it also means it gets quite repetitive. Your voice doesn't sound strained or forced to me. The tricky thing with unconventional voices is finding the perfect processing chain. I'd say start off with something along the lines of Pink Floyd's 'echoes' and start playing with the effects. It will surely be time consuming, but it will be worth it in the long run. The biggest part of being a singer is finding out your internal identity, and this is really difficult to do. Exploring is king, my friend! In terms of plug-ins, I'd recommend iZotope's Nectar 2 for FX's and Melodyne for harmonizing (or Soundtoy's Little AlterBoy for quicker results). Have a listen to these tracks, I think they might help: https://youtu.be/YVpfGQ3TvPAhttps://youtu.be/ghb6eDopW8I

I'm sorry, strat. I was thinking I may have been a bit hard on you. I'm giving Melodyne a try but I'm not optimistic it's going to do much good. I find with that that it begins to sound "overcorrected" at spots. I might take your advise and re key it, but I need a break from it. This project is starting to mentally affect me.

It's all good John.. I don't much like Melodyne either and I have the editor version which is a bit more powerful. It's good song and I understand wanting a certain key. I wish I could offer better advice. All I can offer I guess is the song is worth pretty much whatever you need to do to get it where you want it...... Good Luck man......

Actually, it's not that I don't like Melodyne. I think it's a pretty amazing product, but I spent two hours today trying to tune this track and it doesn't work as easy as they lead you to believe. Some note blobs tend to stick together and I know there's a splitting tool but that doesn't always work real good, so it really came down to a compromise between fine tuning some of the worst off notes while messing up some of the ones that were closer before I started messing around with them, if that makes sense.

I don't hate it either. I just never had good results with it. My fault I am sure, but that doesn't change the outcome.
