Countrybaggers

I heard this term not long ago and I thought I should share it.

Basically a countrybagger is a rock or pop artist who decides to make a country song or album as a cheap ploy for cash or attention.

For example, "that single by Steven Tyler would be the worst example of countrybagging I have ever heard. "

or "Lionel Richie just released a country album.  I would never expected him to be a countrybagger."

Obviously this is open to interpretation as to who qualifies or not.  If you are a rock star with heavy folk influences, then you wouldn't be one.  If you are a "hair metal" band from New Jersey that releases a country track, you just might be a countrybagger.

The democratization of the music market makes all those narratives (and poly ticks) moot. You can be whatever you want to be with authenticity.  I don't need to be Spanish to play guitar do I?

I can think of a few bluesbaggers who should have stuck with what they know.

There are some who would claim the entire Garth Brooks catalog qualifies for such distinction.

The thing about countrybagging is that it is precisely about inauthenticity.  It's about doing something not because you love it, but because you want to cash in.

Authenticity comes more from effort and understanding than anything else.  There are a lot of pantheon-level rock players, for example, that think that just because they are talented in that field they can make an authentic blues album.  More often than not, it ends up as an embarrassment.  Or as James said above, "bluesbagging".

Well, the critics be damned.  It is a business, so why wouldn't they make money doing whatever they do?  There are snobs everywhere and frankly, they're not fun to be around.  They suck the oxygen out of the room during performances.  Music is about letting go and letting the muse take over. If you can write a note, you can compose.  Your compositions will be much better, and you'll be happier being *authentic* (maybe.)   And the only way to do that is to study the genre.  I agree, if some new yorker were throwing around Hank Williams name or dropping other names it'd be downright annoying.  In the Jazz world everyone is a freakin pretender and a name dropper.  It don't bother me a bit.  Fake it till ya make it. :D:D

Country is the 3rd biggest market for music consumption in the US (just under rock and pop) so it's not surprising that non-country artists have tried to tap into it.

I was all indignant when Johnny Cash did all those covers of modern songs at the end of his career. It just seemed like soooo disrespectful to the man (I mean... JC covering YOUR lame arse emo crud?!).

But really, JC's cover of Hurt is just shattering.

Exactly. GB was pretty proud of having sold more records than anybody except the Beatles but the blatantly bogus persona of 'Chris Gaines' was viewed as a pathetic attempt to increase the depth of his crossover market to beat that.

Sure, it's only opinion and all props to anyone who can sell that many records but can't think of a single "authentic country artist" that would have even considered such a move.

Always considered Taylor Swift to be a pop singer-songwriter, but never country.

Wondering what that makes Ryan Adams since he covered an entire album of hers?

Well she was marketed as country, even though you or I might not have considered her as such.

As for Ryan Adams, I guess it comes down to what you think his motives were.  Maybe it was a publicity stunt, maybe he lost a bet, maybe he was trying to work through writers block, maybe he was just following a crazy idea.  Who knows, maybe he really does like her music.
