Crap... X3c didn't fix the pops and clicks

X1 and X2 worked fine but X3 seems to want most of my first CPU and I'm hearing little bits of static type noise. The noise is random so it's not in the recording. In other words, I can solo a track and hear the noise in various places, but if I replay where the noise was it's not necessarily in the same place.

I was hoping the "c" release would cure this but no dice :(

I'm using ASIO drivers and an M-Audio ProFire 2626 and I've increased my playback buffer from 512 to 1024 but didn't notice any difference.

Suggestions?

With Sonar completely closed, take a backup copy of your Aud.ini file
Delete the original.
Next time you open Sonar it will build a new one

This has helped to solve a number of similar problems in the past.

Also check to see if Trigger and Freewheel is selected in your Audio settings.  That's helped me in the past.

Another thing is to disable X-Ray.  I know that the Toontrack plugins didn't like that setting for some reason a few years back.

If it weren't just X3, the usual suspect would be non-Texas Instruments FW adapter chipset. Could still be a contributing factor and worth checking.

Thanks. I tried all the suggestions but still had some small clicks. I was able to eliminate them by freezing the two synths in the project. I've never had to do that in the past? The first CPU core is still peaking but not going red.

Inside of SONAR go to Edit > Preferences > Audio > Sync and Caching. Set Playback I/O Buffer Size to 1024. Does this help?

Thanks, Dan. I had tried that earlier but I did it again to be safe. The culprit seems to be the Bass Guitar synth. If I freeze it I get no clicks. Unfreeze it and I get clicks. I'll be recording the actual bass part on a real bass tonight so it's not that big a of a deal except that I used this same configuration (synth bass to start and then replaced later) on many songs in X2 and never had to freeze any synths.

Studio Instruments is also one that (at one time) didn't like X-Ray which I thought was odd because it was a Cakewalk product.  A CW tech told me to disable X-Ray (BTW.)

Re: Crap... X3c didn't fix the pops and clicks October 31, 13 2:44 PM (permalink)
Good observation, but no it's well below peaking. I tried few patches to see if that mattered but it was still noisy with clicks. If I freeze it the noise goes away. Like I said, this is the first time I've had to freeze a synth so I was surprised. I only use the SI-Bass as a quick placeholder until I record the real bass so it's not that big of a deal now that I've narrowed it down to that. I've have to experiment to see if it's just that synth or if impacts others as well.

btw, on your comment a FW card... when I first got the ProFire 2626 it would not work properly with my computer's on-board firewire so I had to get a dedicated card.

Probably the plugin as you say, but you could try disabling Intel Speedstep in BIOS.

Still worth running the utility.  It will show if system drivers are taking too long to do something.
Sometimes background processes can contribute to the overhead as well.  It can take some detective work to figure out what to do based on the report, but at least it will give you a starting point.

Thanks. You're right, it's a great utility. Now I just need to understand the details. But, it does say, "Your system appears to be suitable for handling real-time audio and other tasks without dropouts." One thing I noticed was the CPU report:

CPU SPEED
________________________________________________________________________________________
Reported CPU speed:                                   3192.0 MHz
Measured CPU speed:                                   1776.0 MHz (approx.)

Note: reported execution times may be calculated based on a fixed reported CPU speed. Disable variable speed settings like Intel Speed Step and AMD Cool N Quiet in the BIOS setup for more accurate results.

Is that something I should be concerned about or is it just in the measurement?

You should be concerned. Your CPU is running at 60% of it's rated speed. Turn off speed step or any BIOS apps that control your temperature. And set your CPU for high performance in your sys settings in windows to keep it running at 100%

Yup please report back when you've disabled speedstep (and what Brando says).

If that doesn't work consider a BIOS update.

In your computer's power plan, verify that the minimum and maximum CPU power settings are identical. One time they were different in my setup, and there would be a little click every time there was a power state change but only with FireWire interfaces. Probably worth checking...

OP, take a peak at my thread to see if it may apply: http://forum.cakewalk.com/Sound-Crackling-CPU-Latencies-When-MultiDock-Maximized-m2921285.aspx

Download and run a program called LatencyMon.exe.
