I always draw the esses, breaths and plosives down when I volume automate my vocal tracks.  Takes a little time but worth it.
More effective than a de-essing plugin.
Actually I use de-essing plug-ins on splashy overheads.  Tucks them in better and makes them less shrill.

It takes one to know one, and vice versa.

One of the advantages knowing TLW's technique is it can work live with a real compressor.

tried most of the above...and spent days on reviews/forums... came away thininkin' Fab Filter's Pro-DS is a whole different enchilada... and I only use it now...  tried the 30 day trial and within a week decided resistance is futile... all ya need...beautifully done and hotly intelligent...
