Deep shell snare

Hi Lads
I use SD3 but Im  not really impressed with any of the snare sounds.   Check out on YouTube a song by Bad Company called How About That.   I love that deep big snare sound the guy has.    Anyone know of a good snare plug in that gives that deep strong rock sound on the snare?   Would EZ Drummer be a better software to use?
Thanks guys.

Can you not use SD3's tools to shape the snare sound the way you want it? I like a deep snare sound myself.

SD3 is pretty much just a trigger pad, you can load whatever samples you have or find onto any of the spots in SD3.  I use SD3 whenever I need drums, which is always, and I can't honestly say I've ever used any samples that came with it

SD3 (assuming you mean Session Drummer 3 and not Superior Drummer 3 by Toontrack) to EZDrummer2 is like comparing a Volkswagen to a Porche.

Yes EZDrummer2 will be better software to use than SD3 in my opinion.

If you really want your socks knocked off, check out Superior Drummer 3.

You can also hear it in THIS SONG. That is the stock Ludwig Black Beauty snare.

Session drummer 3 you can load your own samples . Something both Superior Drummer and EZ2 can not do.

Which version of Sonar do you have? If you have Professional or Platinum you'll have Addictive Drums 2 ( AD2)
If you haven't already done so, register and then go to the web site and audition the drum kits. I'm sure you'll find the snare you want.
With Sonar Pro you get 1 add pak with Splat you get 2.
I have Session Drummer 2 and 3 Addictive Drums 2 and Strike 2 ( Air ) and use them all. But I use AD2 for the majority of songs.

AD2 has a much more in depth interface and is a step up in sound quality from SD. Just being able to add reverb and EQ  compression and on and on.  Strike 2 is real good too but I've yet to understand how to change kit pieces and customize, If I find a kit I like I'm fine, but I always like to fine tune my kits.  AD 2 is super easy to configure compared to Strike. And Session drummer sound flat and lifeless unless you find better samples and add effects to the audio output.

I do use SD if I want to play one of my own sampled drum parts. I sampled my real drum kit and I sampled my Snare about 30 different ways and using different mikes etc. So it's pretty cool for that. AD2 you are forced to buy there kits. I'm not sure about Strike2 playing my samples and need to spend more time with it.

Actually, Superior Drummer 3 now can load user samples, although it seems a bit superfluous given that it ships with a 40GB (230GB total with all the additional ambient/surround/bleed samples!) core library of killer drum sounds.

Also, not sure what version of Sonar the OP has, but Platinum includes Addictive Drums 2 and two AdPacks. Some pretty good sounding drums in there, too. EDIT: Ah, just noticed Cactus Music's post. What he said.

There are places where you can buy individual snare samples. My favorite drum sample shop is Drumwerks, which offers a large selection of individual kit pieces. Here's their snares page. They're typically 5 bucks apiece, plus they have bundles of snares such as the Pearl Power Pack with 50 snares - gotta imagine one of those will be what you're looking for.

Drumdrops is another vendor to check out. Analog Drums sells kits, but they're cheap and you can pull any of the drums out for individual application.

As noted previously, there are many options for beefing up the snares you already have. Truth is, real-life snare drums never sound as good as they do on records. That's all engineering magic.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Thanks guys for the feedback.  Im using the very basic Sonar X3 as a DAW and it only ships with Session Drummer 3.   I dont mind dragging in drum samples and saving the kit as a custom kit.  If i could find some good snare sounds that is.     I haven't had any luck in trying to improve the snare sounds as Bflat5 was asking.   I did a quick google for "snare samples" and see if there is anything decent i can download.    Or, I'll check how much Superior Drummer is as suggested by Bapu.  I wouldnt be in a financail position to buy expensive drum software for the sake of a snare sound.    I find Session D nice n easy to use so its just a matter i guess of dragging in some decent samples.    Thanks guys.  Some helpful stuff there :)

Yes, Drumwerks has run sales in the past, and have weekly specials. Once you make a purchase you'll be on their mailing list and get tipped off on future deals. But really, at $5 a pop - that's the price of one drumstick. Why wait for a sale?

P.S. I see that the weekly special is a collection of a dozen Ludwig snares for 20 bucks.

When I first read the original post, I too thought he might have been talking about Superior Drummer 3.
And thought, wow, if you can't find a decent snare drum sound in THAT drum software, then you ain't looking hard enough.  Superior Drummer 3 has dozens and dozens of snare drums, and if you can't find the one you like, you can shape and mold a pre-existing snare drum to sound exactly how you want it.  It doesn't just change the pitch of drums (in a fake sampled way), it recreates the sound of a drum as if you were actually re-tuning it.  Or as mentioned, you can also just add your own sample, to be played on it's own or in combination with an existing drum sample.  Combining and layering samples is a great new feature in SD3.

Session Drummer 3, I've never even touched.  As someone said, it's like comparing a Volkswagen to a Porsche.

Funny, last night I updated AD2 and clicked on the Register Products tab. I didn't realize what was even there... I found I had 3 kit pieces and a whole extra Kit sitting waiting for my attention. I grabbed the Percussion kit and a a couple of snares.
Turns out a bonus from first buying Professional and upgrading. You end up with 4 free kits and a bunch of kit pieces.
This was like going into a music store and someone giving me a new drum set and a few snares!

Oldish thread, but personally I use BFD3. There's some absolutely incredible snares in there, as well as some amazing expansions. Their Dunnett Titanium kit is damn good, I find myself using it a lot these days.

They are great sounding samples. The snare samples for Whole lotta snare sounds like a good Bonham snare.
You have to fine tune them though. I sound stack snare and kick samples.

To be honest guys Ive been looking at the prices of those better packages such as superior or EZ and i really cant afford it.     Heres the game plan.    Keep Session Drummer as a base software but buy some kits or single shots from some of the great links the guys posted earlier in the thread.   I'll then just drag those better sounds into Session D and save them as custom kits.    Well it's a workaround i guess till i can afford one of the other packages.

I guess your don't have Addictive drums?

The other option as metioned earlier is keep an eye out in the deals forum here and grab Strike 2. I got mine for like $35. It's more complicated than AD2 and SD2 but has a lot of kits for the price you pay.

Adding other samples to SD is pretty easy so give it a go first.

Yes, if Session Drummer is all you have now, that's not a bad thing. You can take your own samples and bring them in. But you can also use the sounds that come with it by layering your snare sound using your midi snare track. Have one snare hi, another low, another with snap, and still another with what ever you can think of. The sky is the limit! Generous use of compression could help also. Remember, no rules. And let your ears be your guide!

You say you have X3, but didn't say which version of X3. Even the lowest Studio version has some great fx in there that you can use to help you out.

Yes its just the home studio version.   It does everything I need so I never bothered buying a higher version.  Any extra plug ins i needed i always just bought and downloaded.    All i need really now is just to get better drum sounds and im pretty much sorted.

I also forgot to mention guys.   I recently bought a Millenium MD-90.    Its one of those electronic drum kits that comes in a single unit.   The plan is to learn drums.    So if I can manage this goal... I wont really need better drumming software per se but just better sounds.     So in that respect maybe just keeping Session D as the basic engine and buying better kits etc would work fine.
I'm looking at the links the guys posted in this thread and single shots are like only 5 bucks and a full kit can be got for around 15.     Those are really good value prices.
