Excellent song.  I listened twice.  I don't know if you already changed things but i think the Vox sits nicely.  I listened on my work computer's 5.1 system.  Sounded pro.  Very much loved the strings and where they come in.  The drums sound good to me.  Maybe I'd take a hair off their presence but that is me.  Love the mood you have created with the sound colors.  The stereo is super wide.  It's a winner, Lynn!  Really.

John, I appreciate you taking the  time to listen and your comments.  I don't have 5.1 in my studio, so it's good to know that it works in surround.  Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good :)

Hmmm...    I think I've just listened to my favorite Lynn song.

Seriously, it's a cool song.  A bit different from other tunes you've done but I really like the direction.  It's a double listener for sure and just all around well done.

Regarding the drums, I like the slight roll feel it brings.  The only nit-picky change I would entertain is perhaps using a "crisper" snare tone, with a little loose snare rattle.   But who cares, this is some really good material

Very original song, Lynn, and matched by this off-beat* production. Love the quirky percussion and tasty string arrangement.

Wow Lynn ,

You have really stepped up your song writing and musical productions a few notches since my last visit here .
I dug the songs message, the production , your singing, the mix and the overall vibe of the song
I enjoyed the quirkiness of the beats and the supporting sustained guitar tones ...
Yes , there seems to be a Total Package type of thing going on here w your music...

all the best,

Hi Lynn,

I'm on my second listen of Defying Gravity.

This is one cool original song. I love it

Love your "gritty" vocal and the different effects you have going on through the song. Mix and overall production is spot on, not that I'm qualified to comment on that haha! Composition is great and makes me want to listen to it again (on my third listen while I'm thinking what to say...)

cheers

Andy, thanks for taking the time to listen to this more than once.  That alone makes me feel that I'm on to something.  But, don't think for one minute that you're not qualified to comment on a production because your own productions are very good.

Um.  Wow!  This is the first Lynn song I've listened to.  I absolutely loved and thought the drums were perfect.  I loved everything about this song.  I love that it has a very minor feel, and I love that it seems it seems to be in the major scale at points.  Reminds me of earlier Peter Gabriel / Genesis with guitar.

After it ended, your site switched to "The Devil's In My House."  I think I need to listen to more of your music.  I love this stuff!

Excellent song, Lynn.  As usual no one's mentioning the lyrics, but I noticed, and could definitely relate to the subject matter .  Drums did not trouble me.  I really enjoyed the song and in particular loved what you did with the strings.

Hey there!

Yeah, the effects of aging. Always fun.

Great mix and creative in so many ways! Love whatever effects you're doing on your voice. I would only suggest a hair more pitch correction on some of your longer notes.

Am I thinking some Pink Floyd is in your soul?

The snare is the only thing I think isn't cutting. It's there, but when I do the old 'TURN EVERYTHING DOWN TO ITS LOWEST AUDIBLE STATE' I should be hearing both your voice and the snare ONLY. So that's how I know the snare could come up a bit. That's how I check my snare levels against the voice. A friend of mine who died of cancer at 49 taught me that one. Never forgotten that advice.

Hi hat. Down a tad. Maybe ad a humanize filter to the midi. Randomize CAL will do it in SONAR.

Good introspective piece. Dig your voice. Keep up the creative work.

Martin, Pink Floyd is definitely part of my DNA :)  I like your suggestion about turning everything down to hear the balance of vocal and snare.  I use a similar method of listening in my car with the windows open.  Something I picked up while listening to commercial CDs.  Btw, the drum part was once played by a human, as it's a preset in Superior Drummer.  I really appreciate the fact that you took such a careful listen and took the time to comment.  That's what I always hope for when I post a song.  Oh yeah, I love your video of you mimicking various singers.  What a creative idea!

Nice song. Are the laid back drums done for effect?I like the Devil's in my house too. I sometimes do things with drums and background vox that people questions but it is intentional.

Edward, thanks for taking the time to listen and comment.  I suppose the laid back drums are intentional.  I hadn't noticed that they were laid back, but I must have decided this was that kind of song.  That's my story, and I'm sticking to it ;)

Re: Defying Gravity - hot off the press 2017/03/17 16:07:19 (permalink)
Lynn,

Your vocal sounds great!

Re; the drums. The problem is not the groove or the pattern - it's the dynamics. It's a highly dynamic part, but in the mix it's all flat. 2 possible solutions - with variants.

1. Break out each part and individually compress them so that the whole kit doesn't get squashed. Or just break out the dynamic parts - the hats and the snare rolls. You want those dynamic parts to stick out because they enhance the groove.

2. Try to mess with the volumes in the mixer on the drum kit and run two full drum tracks in parallel - one for the main beat which is squished and then another that isn't limited, but still has a good base threshold of compression. That will allow the dynamics to pop out with out losing the bottom end.

Oh - and more reverb on the parts that you really want to stick out. Let that wash over the mix a little to get it feeling fuller.

Glad you're still here.

Thanks again, Jesse!

I just posted a remix of this tune (3/27/17), and took the suggestions from several people to remix the drums in this.  I have to agree that it sounds better, overall, and thank all of you for your suggestions.  I hope you like it.

Lynn,

This mix is good, I actually thought your last mix was incrementally better.     Seems like there is some missing low and low-mids compared to the last version.   Also thought the drums were better in the last mix.  I liked their rawer quality in the context of the song.    Anyway, have enjoyed all your mixes on this song and the song itself is quite awesome.
