Defying Gravity - new mix 3/28/17

Hello everyone, I'm back with a brand new song that I wrote two weeks ago.  I defer to all of you to help steer me in the right direction.  This song is so new that I'm very much open to ideas and suggestions.  Once again, I feature my new EBow which I'm having a blast with.  I hope you enjoy this ditty about the affects of aging.

First of all, great song - lyrics, instrumentation, chord structure, performance = A1.
My only nit is the drum pattern during the verses. It seems to make the track drag, mainly early on.
Listening a bit closer, I think it's the snare flams that are doing the damage - no dragging during the chorus.
Again, this is a bloody good song, I'm on my third listen. Your vocal reminds me of Peter Gabriel on this one.
Nice one Lynn.

Sounds like the basis of a good tune here, like Daryl there is something about the drums that does not quite gel.  Do not ask me what as I do not tend to use drums that often so I can not help.  Will keep the furry ears out for the updates.

Love the song and general structure of this tune, typing this on my third listen. There is something about the drums which like the others I can't really put my finger on, maybe its the double hit/roll of the snare that's making it not gel.

Forgot to add, it sounds great on my surface pro 4 speakers - great mix

Loved it.  The drums didn't bother me as much.  The drummer is on the back end of the beat to be sure, but it didn't bother me.  :D:D

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!   Excellent number.  A bit different and more orchestrated than some of your other songs.  The lyrics are great and your delivery is excellent.  I liked you use of the "telephone" FX on the vocals.  The use of strings worked out well and for some reason I just loved that rhythm guitar panned hard left (little things excite me).  I don't know ---- I didn't have a problem with the drums.
Brilliant stuff Lynn!

Lynn,

This sounds and feels like you are entering new territory from what I've heard from you before. This is a really good song, and your arrangement is quite nice. Your mix is nice and open, no crowding, with everything audible. The drums don't bother me, but they could be simplified a bit and use the flam more as accents periodically.

Regards,
Dan

Daryl, thanks for your kind comments.  I'll explain the drums in a minute.

Wookie, as always, thanks for listening and replying.

Adrian, I appreciate your comments and taking the time for the extra listens.

Eph, thanks for your comment.  You're on to something about the drums.

Freddy, wow, you always encourage me with your comments.  So grateful.

Dan, thank you so much for your observation about going into new territory.  Sometimes you just get lucky when trying to be creative.

As to the drums:  Now, I'm going to spend a bit of time listening to alternative parts, which I don't mind doing at all.  The current part is a simple straight 4/4 beat from Superior Drummer's Avatar beats.  I like it because of the double snare beat, which reminds me of something Bill Bruford of King Crimson does a lot.  It is something that I don't use when I program my own patterns because I'm not a drummer, and I do like counterpoint very much.  I use a different pattern in the chorus.  I consider the verses the part of the song that's most affected by gravity, and the choruses are the parts that "defy" gravity ;)

Lynn

Lynn,

Great song and really like the chord and melody choices.

Vocals could come up a hair.  Distorted organ could come down a hair during the chorus.

Some of the string parts at the end seem a little off starting around 3:38.   Just a timing thing.

Have had a couple listens through after running across this post yesterday.  Really excellent songwriting.

Mark, thank you for your comments.  I will give your ideas a try on my next pass.  As for the timing, the part's actually quantized, but that's where the key change occurs.  I think you're hearing the transition note that leading to the change of scales.  I played around with different notes, but chose that because it's in the scale of both keys.  I wondered about that part.

Mesh, thank you for your time and kind words.

Steen, I appreciate your time and comments.  I just listened to "Scirocco" and I love that song.  You could easily get that wide sound by panning a few elements 75% L and R, which is what I did.  It helps create space and separation.  Put a few things in the 30 to 40 percent range, as well.  Good luck.

Hi Lynn

Listened through twice - I really enjoyed this - it has a nice original feel to it. Let's be honest, a few of us round here will have no trouble empathising with the lyrics. Lovely production, lots of space and air. Your voice suits the song perfectly - good job. Had to google ebow - new world for a guitarist eh? Bet you are having a blast!

Very nice song, i like the panning of the instruments.
Great vocals, but i would probably raise the volume of them a tiny bit.
Maybe some more compressor on the vocals as well, with a fast attack to make the vocals more IYF.

But its very good as it is right now! :)

Link doesnt work but i navigated via your soundclick link.

Great, much better! :)
Now i can feel your vocals much closer and "in my face".
Previous version was a little bit like you where standing in the middle of the room singing.
You could probably go a little bit higher still. But that is all a matter of taste.
Most singers (i know) are a bit uncomfortable with their own vocals and tend to mix them too low.

Great song.

Hi Lynn,
Finally I could hear this tune . Previously the link was not tip top..
It seems that you did work on this tune and according to me you did well.
The song takes me by the hand for a kind of voyage in the soundscapes of a land which lies somewhere between British productions and pure american blues.
The intro reminds something of Pink Floyd then the voice comes ,firm and clear.
Don't know what to think about the strings ,they don't bother me though I am not completely fan..
Great job.
Cheers.
Olivier

Yep very cool tune! I like how you are stretching yourself as a songwriter! I must have listened to the newer mix. Ebow is way cool and the vocals are great, too. Vocally, a bit of Colin Hay, which to my mind is really quite good territory! you have a good thing going here.

As for the drums, I don't think it's the drums, but that little guitar or organ part up top - it's imitating a European police siren - "daa-dooooo   daa-doooo"  forgive my stupid rendition! I think that's coming in ahead of the main beat sometimes.   Check :50  area?

Jimmy, thanks for stopping by and commenting.  Hopefully, I'm growing.

Bjorn, I'm happy to hear from you.  That chord progression actually started with the guitar in the right channel that's playing intervals.

Tom, thanks for your kind words.  That part you are referring to is, I believe, a strange, plucked sample from Rapture Pro, or it's the arpeggiated djembe sample from Expand!2.  I heard it, but decided to leave it as is.  I was just trying to stay away from my usual cookie cutter production ;)

Steve, that's a great tip that can help all of us.  Thanks for sharing.

Lynn,

Your re-mix sounds much better.   Vocals are more upfront and everything is very well balanced.   Sounds good through headphones too:)   Great work.
