Desciple - something different from the norm (for me)
I found some old vacation videos and decided to score some music for them. This is the first song I wrote, an instrumental titled "Desciple". I've written instrumentals in the past, but not with the modern tools I have today. Other than Superior Drummer and Jamstix, I stayed in the box with X1, using z3ta-2, Rapture, and Dimension Pro. Nothing is set in stone, so if you all have suggestions, I'm all ears. BTW, the ending on this is very abrupt by design, as if it were swallowed by a black hole. That, too, isn't set in stone, yet. I want to thank in advance all who take the time to listen to this piece. I remastered this today (8/9) to reduce the volume of the mp3 file. Hopefully this will not distort. This has been remixed today (8/11) to address the "jump cuts" issues and to put a fade on the ending for those who didn't care for the abrupt end. It can be found here: http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?q=hi&songID=11816663

Great! Composition is great. Those synth sounds are perfect, the reverb and production are great. There seem to be a couple of jump cuts in the last half of the song, like record needle skips. Not sure what those are but other than that it's great all round!

Lynn this was a really nice piece to listen to, especially since I also just upgraded to X1 and I am using out-of-the box tools. You covered a range of synths here in this! My first listen to this hurt my ears, as I had the sound up enough to preview most others' songs on here - how do you get such high compression without clipping? I took in several of your others and they're at the same level. *lol* I'll just remember next time to roll down the gains a tad before previewing one 'a yours! haha Nice job though on the synths and production. I think you should create an actual ending though, rather than the black hole effect! Perhaps a fade-out on a loop of what you have going near the end would be great. Nice work! - John

Moe, thanks for giving this a listen and for you kind comments. I'm not sure about the "needle skips", but I hope that it's a fault of the server because I don't hear them on my end. JD, thank you, as well, for taking the time to listen and comment. Sorry about your ears. I use Sound Forge to create my master before mp3 conversion, and set my limiter (Ozone) to a -0.1 ceiling. I find when listening to other submissions that I'm in the middle of the pack as far as volume goes. I have no idea if that's standard or not, and perhaps others could give me an idea if this is acceptable. As for the ending, it actually coincides with the video I scored this to, but could easily be faded on the last few measures.

This takes me back to Enigma. I like it but to me it needs vocals. That was an abrupt ending. I like it! Well done!!!

I like this Lynn, but the mix sounds a bit too hot or else there is too much fizz in the patch. (I know fizz is not the right word... I'm a guitar player OK ) I like the movement changes. That bass sounds killer, what did you use? Daryl

Hi Daryl, thanks for taking the time. I think the fizz you are hearing is a result of mastering the wave file too loud. I will reduce the volume by several db on the next pass. The bass samples come from Dimension Pro. The one at the beginning and end is called Modern from the Synth Bass patches, and the one in the middle section is Artificial Fretless, also from the Synth Bass patches. James, I'm glad you liked it. Some of your own work inspired me to do this instrumental, so thanks for that. Daren, I'm glad you liked it, as well. Your own venture into experimental music was on my mind, too. I enjoyed this project so much that I'm going to continue scoring old videos that I have lying around.

Hi Lynn, Nice song...it does kinda hearken back to Enigma. A couple notes - I do hear the "jump cut" that was referred to earlier in the thread. It happens between 2:32 and 2:33 and I think it's either a cut/trimmed waveform at a non-zero point or an artifact of the Z3ta patch you're using. You may want to experiment with a reverb tail at the end just to give the listener the impression that the song ends "on purpose" as opposed to checking his playback device or streaming server. If you still want to maintain an abrupt or black-hole kind of feel, maybe even try adding some reverb to the final cymbal crescendo, bounce it, cut off just the reverb tail, reverse it and cross-fade it with the original reverb tail so that you hear first the cymbal crescendo, then the reverb tail which transitions into the reversed tail and ends abruptly. OTOH, if you like it that way or if it's video scoring and it works with the film, leave it just as it is :) Nice work, Dean

Shawn and Dean, thanks for your time and comments. Regarding the ending, it does fit the video because the video abruptly comes to an end when I run out of film. However, as a stand alone song I can see your point. I could easily fade it on the final loop and might have, except I do that so often. But, if it fits it fits. As for the "jump cut", this is the kind of thing that I look for from my fellow forum members. I will go back to X1 and replay that section to find a fix. Thank you for taking the time for a detailed explanation. To Moe and Dean, I just went to the source and discovered the the "jump edits" you're hearing is the result of an unquantized synth part that started just ahead of the measure by a few clicks. Good ears gentlemen. I'm on it and will post the correction shortly.

This is pretty cool. I don't think it sounds like 'Enigma' but I do think it's got a cool cross-era vibe with touches from synth wizards of the 70s through to up to date stuff. Good job, love the bass patch and the choice of synths is good. Cheers, Terry.

Terry, I appreciate your comments because this style of music is more up your alley than mine, I believe. I want to bring to your and others attention that I remixed and reposted this song just minutes ago to address the jump cuts issue and to put a fade on the ending. Thanks to all who pointed this out to me.

Well, Lynn, I didn't expect this from you. I'm not sure why but I'm glad I was able to get up here and listen. I am not usually one for instrumentals but I found this one entertaining. I think it is all done well and the volume worked for me on my system.
