It's 2.5 months since Leopard was released already (and they must have had a beta before!).

I sure hope that there will be some info about an update at NAMM...

I have a slight suspicion or at least some hope the new 10.5.2 update could fix a few of the DM Pro errors since other applications (e.g. lounge lizard) had similar problems on the new Leopard. Ideas anyone?

Which leaves us either today or tomorrow. Hopefully they will deliver cause I am really looking forward to use my cakewalk plugs on my mac.

RE: Dimension Pro on Leopard/Cubase 4.1 2008/01/30 13:18:56 (permalink)
As a funny side effect to not having Dimension Pro and Rapture for the past 3 months:
I've started playing around with instruments I've otherwise neglected, which has been illuminating.

In particular: NI's Massive and FM8 (which combined can pull off many of the tricks that I used to use Rapture for, frankly), as well as Absynth and Sculpture (which pull off what I used to use Dimension Pro for: funky, whacked out atmospheres). Granted, these come at their tasks from quite different points of view and are pretty different in architecture from the Cakewalk stuff.

I still miss my Dimension Pro and Rapture, particularly for existing projects that are sort of baking on the hard drive, but for new tracks going forward I actually think I'll use them significantly less than I used to. That's a good thing, I think, since it makes my tracks less one-sided than they were.

So, in a strange and unexpected sense, I'm actually happy that the break has occurred. I wouldn't have explored other options had the patches been more forthcoming, as the NI synths were (unexpectedly also, since NI has a reputation for being slow, and Cakewalk has a reputation for being fast).

Hopefully soon, however, I'll be able to open the projects that contain Rapture and Dimension Pro. That would be very nice, indeed.

Take care,
- zevo

But it doesn't yet work if DimPro isn't already installed (i.e. one upgraded from Tiger->Leo after installing DimPro).

got the first error:

when I try to load the patch "Alto 3v Alternation" (Saxophone Multisample) I get an error message:

"Couldn't create Logfile ...Library\Audio\Plug-Ins\Dimension Pro Content\\sfzlog.txt"

Is it the "\\" ?

And then

"Multisample not found...pink.wav"

I Installed DimPro from scratch using the 7z extraction tweak (by copying all the CD contents on my HD, replacing the 7z applications and running the installation).
Could there possibly went something wrong? I suspect it didn't copy all the audio sample files.

I just installed the 1.3 update and it finished installation. But when I loaded Logic 8 I got an AU error "Logic Pro quit unexpectedly while trying to Audio Unit "Dimension Pro...."

I also am unable to install either of the expansion packs. I get an error about not finding certain samples in the dmg or on the harddrive.

Something is definitely not right. Please help.

Is this 1.3 update mean I have to have the original installed first?

I hope not cuz the DimPro installer disk would not work in Leopard!!!

sorry Dude, you will have to - like me ;)
The original installer copys the basis library on your hard drive.
To make the installer work on Leopard, just use the common tweak here from the forum:

1. copy the contents of both installer cds on your HD, creating two directories for each CD
2. download the latest version of the 7z compressor from here: http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
3. use Pacifist to extract the 7z executable to the directory /Install Data/Multisamples into both of your copied directories
4. run the installation from both of your copied directories

However, that's just what I did. And it still doesn't work correctly. A lot of multisamples are missing.
I think there's a lot of work left for the Cakewalk developers.

OK i found the latest 7za unix executable. I copied the disk image to my drive. copied over the existing 7za in the multi samples directory. Installation still fails saying "An error occurred that kept the installation from completing"!

wrong link. sorry. you'll get it from here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/27156
you will get a .dmg file which has to be mounted. within it, you will find a .pkg installer. Pacifist makes it possible to browse through that package file and retrieve the 7z application.

By the way, I just found a way to make some of the Multisamples work again. Just copy every folder from the installer CDs which resides in /Install Data/Multisamples/ into your Sample library folder on your HD. I just got the saxophones to work without any error :)

I'll let you know if I find out more.

Geez... this is a bummer.

Sorry Cake, and respectfully:
Mac development happens quicker than Windows development. 3 months isn't acceptable on this side of the house... Apple moves at light speed in comparison to Microsoft. Gotta keep up!! You're 1/4 the way to the release of 10.6!!!

- zevo

(ps - I'm only half joking. If you take 3 months to patch Mac software, you'll get a bad rep, and it will be over... I'm trying to help)

Just out of interest: why do Apple seem to break everything whenever they release an update to the OS? Is backwards compatibility such a bad idea in their minds, even for smaller updates? I can see why some devs don't like coding for the Mac platform, as they have to do extra work on their plugins whenever Apple updates the OS and they generally have to do it for free...

Well, inside point upgrades things don't usually get broken. Could it be that they really improve the system in bigger updates like from Tiger to Leo and don't want it to be clogged down by providing internal hacks for backward compatibility?

Most software companies don't seem to have a big problem with this. My guess is that DimPro or it's protection were coded in a difficult way, that's why it takes so long.

I really do think they're fine. I was just kidding around.

They're still very new to Mac development, and it takes several iterations to really learn the system inside and out, so when a change happens it can take longer.

This is in contrast to companies that have 5+ years experience coding multiple apps/plugins for Macs. They'll see fixes more, and will consequently release fixes more quickly.

No biggie.
Sorry if I sounded harsh.

Incorrect. I can think of lots of examples, such as the FW break with 10.4.8...

Not from what I've seen (and I work with quite a few software companies). If Apple doesn't get a pre-release out to the developers in time, there's usually trouble...

Apple gets betas out to registered devs before all releases. They currently have the 10.5.2 beta out to devs.

Maybe cake is waiting for that to be released I dunno, but i'm confused as to why they released a broken DimPro 1.3

They could have just release it working later on and not tease us.

Is anyone seeing this 1.3 release working in Logic?

hey guys,

I tested the new DimPro1.3 for a few hours and played almost every patch. I am using the VST in Cubase 4. Everything is just fine except the sounds from both expansion packs. Somehow, the installer didn't copy all samples here, too. As I can't access these files because they are built into the installer app, I would have to ask Cakewalk for a solution on this.

Lucky me I am not using Logic, huh ;) Damn it and I was thinking about switching to this app.

I said usually. Leopard has been out for over 3 months. Leopard betas have apparently been out for like 7 months.

-Download this: http://homepage.mac.com/krmathis/applications/p7zip%204.57.dmg and extract the "7za" executable

-Mount your cakewalk cd. The apple+click and drag the volume in order to create a copy of it on your hard disk.

-Eject your cd

-In the copy you have just made navigate to /Install Data/Dimension Pro Content/Multisamples/ and replace the "7za" executable with the one you had previously extracted from that dmg.

-Then run the Dimension Installer.app, now it should not hang.

This helped for me partly, installation aborted later, while copying the multisamples (the multisamples were not complete). But I found a solution to solve the problem: just install the plugin on a Windows machine (or OSX Tiger) and copy the multisamples manually.

This worked for me, I'm using Logic Studio 8 and Dimension's now running (although I can't install Expansion Pack 1, aborts with an error that says a file wasn't found)...

welcome to the club ;)

cakewalk needs to rewrite their installers in order to make them function on leopard systems. I already dropped them a nasty support mail :)
