Maybe Robby wants every forum member (over .5M) to not only listen but comment?

That's Juan way to keep your song on page Juan.

I listen to almost everything that's posted on this forum, but for various reasons, I don't always comment...
One thing is for sure... If you do not comment on mine or others' music.., I will not comment on yours... unless you're a newby...

There are some here I admire very much, as players, and/or producers, but sadly, I guess my pride won't allow me to comment on their music, when experience shows they'll probably never reciprocate...

Interesting thread.  I find that I 'listen' to songs in batches, like this morning, and I've commented on most that I heard, but I did not listen to all of them all the way through.  If I like the style or genre, I usually do listen to the whole song.  If I comment, I try to say something positive about the song, or the mix, or the musicianship.  On occasion I offer a suggestion, but as a relative newcomber and novice, I'm not really comfortable doing that or consider myself knowledgeable enough to.

I think I can tell from the comments on my songs that some are essentially encouragement, 'Good so far', 'Keep going', while others are much more than that.  It never occurred to me that a poster didn't listen to 'any' of the song though.

This is kind of a bogus issue for me.  I'm always grateful if anyone responds to my posts.  I can tell the difference between chuff and the real advice that I'm seeking.  I guess that I don't take myself "seriously" enough.

All the best,

There are some here I admire very much, as players, and/or producers

Since you do comment on songs I've been involved in, I must NOT be one of those.

I would much rather see "good job", or "nice tune", or "keep going", as opposed to someone posting 2 paragraphs about their life in a post that I was truly looking for some meaningful feedback on. My 2 cents.

Even when people comment within 2 minutes of posting it does not mean they did not listen.  Considering how common things like posting while at work is, it would n ot surprise me if people sometimes commented at a different time then when they actually listened.

I can tell whether a song is good or bad within the first 15 seconds. If it's really really good I listen to the end. If not, I quit after a minute and I either comment or I don't. If a some part of a song, say the vocals perhaps, jumps out at me as sounding dreadfully horrible, I will choose not to comment. I'm sure others do the same. Is that wrong?

Probably no need to be harsh (hint hint Frank ) about horrible vocals.

Well Robby how are you bro?

I think its a good topic to bring up in light of enhancing the forum credibility.

When I usually get a "good job" or whatever, I appreciate the comment and time but I know its not worth anything to me per se. Like us all we have come to know who posts the generic dribble we want to hear but often doesn't help and we all know the people that when we see their name appearing our hearts jump a little bit before we read the comment!

I would say about 75% people don't listen to a song fully and unless its in our field of liking or just a very damn captivating song, we may listen to the end. I rarely listen to the very end but I hope that I always try to offer something besides generic comments and come up with other useful details ,i.e. some issues and improvements based on my own level of skill.

It is case specific too though. Your not gonna screw a newbie over by highlighting flaws, you need to criticise constructively, however the guys that are experienced and throw out the good stuff here can be nailed every now and again! I love honesty even though I hate hearing it, but that's because I want to create the best I can, others just like to mess about and have fun, they don't need the full brunt bearing honesty IMO.

Anyway, I hope this topic as a result make people comment ultimately in a more positive light to help progress and develop each musician/producer in their craft based on their level of career motivation, skill level and a little bit based on their inherent character sensitivity!

I won't be false here: I don't listen to a lot of music here. But I'll be honest in that I also don't listen to much music at all anyway. I do comment on the ones I listen to... I'm trying to get more accustomed to listening to others. Sorry guys, haha

Re: Do they all really listen? 2014/01/06 21:21:30 (permalink)
I'm fairly new to this thread, I tend to listen to a song once and make an observation based on first impressions. I'll give it a second listen if I really like it, or I think I can contribute. There are certainly times that I'll stop before the end, or even not long after the start. But I won't make a comment on those songs until I can go back and have a listen when I'm in a better frame of mind.
I think life's too short to go to the effort of posting a "good job", "well done" just for the sake of it. If that's what's been posted I mean just that, and don't feel I have that much to offer in a critical sense, it's kind of like "I've had a listen and thanks for posting". I don't think I've been here long enough to offer deep criticisms of others works, and I don't think I would have the credibility if I did.
I do try to write a comment that makes sense(obviously) in the context of the question from the person that posted. I do hope that I can contribute, and I hope that my strengths and weaknesses in that regard become apparent as time goes on.
Cheers from an aging jazz/rock musician from Stawell, Australia.

Re: Do they all really listen? 2014/01/06 21:47:06 (permalink)
I listen to almost every song or piece of music and 95% of the time I listen to the whole piece/song all the way through. My reasoning is they put forth an effort to create it and being part of a forum I feel almost obligated to give it my effort of listening, even if I know the person has never left a reply on my own music. Why, you may ask? Because I don't want to be like them. If I listen all the way through a song or piece of music then I get the full impact or point of what maybe they were trying to create, plus it gives me a better idea as to how I want to comment. Otherwise, I might as well not even bother being in a forum at all. Sometimes our responses are helpful to others and sometimes all a person needs to hear is nicely done and it helps to build their confidence in becoming better. I even have found myself being a bit crude at times and for that I am always sorry and have gone back and deleted statements, because I know better. We are all human and not perfect and we all certainly make mistakes, and I'll be the first here to admit to that. Some people are only hear for their on glory and so I hope that is working for them. I have learned a lot in this forum because of people taking the time to listen and commenting on my mistakes and then learned how to correct them. It is a long and slow venture, unless you go to sound engineering school, which  is very expensive, more than I could ever afford. So, listen and learn, this is a good thing!!
