Do you exercise regularly?

I try to stay fit by utilizing an elliptical trainer 30 minutes at a time at least 4 days a week.   I also perform some ab exercises as well as light weights and stretching.

However, it seems like I'm not seeing any results.  Meaning, I just had to get a new belt because the old one no longer circumvents my girth.

Not unless you count what I do for a living (gardener), and walking the dog. My waistline increases during the winter when I'm not busy and decreases from spring to autumn.

I go to the gym regularly and find that doing fitness classes is far more effective than working out on my own because the teacher is barking orders at you for 45 minutes or so and there isn't much opportunity to slack, which I'm prone to do in a solo workout.

Yes, I lift regularly. My doctor (who is amazing BTW) gave me two great quotes:

"You put muscle on in the gym, you lose weight in the kitchen"
and
"you can't out exercise a bad diet"

My experience is that 30 minutes of cardio with light weights even every day isn't going to dent your fat - unless you are already programmed to be skinny.

You're going to have to honestly re-assess your diet...

It's not just diet, it's lifestyle. The heaviest I ever got was 197. When I got laid off in 2004, I weighed 183.

Since then, I've acquired two dogs (who get one long walk (average 3 miles), plus 3-4 short walks (1/4 to 1/2 miles each) per day), gotten rid of a wife who wanted nothing more to do with me, and moved up the hill to Flagstaff from Scottsdale, where I can spend a LOT more time outside on my feet and moving around instead of parked on my a$$.

I drink a couple of beers a couple of times per week, otherwise water, tea and smoothies. I mostly eat stir-fry with GABA-activated brown rice, with one cook giving me 3-4 meals (only one chicken breast or one boneless pork chop goes into each stir-fry).

I now weigh 140, and have been stable at that weight for 3 years.

Giving up hard liquor and wine was easy. Giving up daily beers was kind of tough.

But giving up cookies, when some of my medical marijuana strains are total munchie starters? Geez, but that's been a REAL beatch!

I also use an elliptical 4-5 days a week.  My sessions are 40 minutes, targeting the mid 20 @ an 85-90% max heart rate.  I also walk Nikki multiple times a day with a 2-3 mile target in total, weather depending.  Hot weather wears on both of us, so hot weather walks are shorter.  My results have been longer times required to achieve higher heart rates & sweat.  It doesn't seem to matter much for weight

Absolutely.... I have already logged over 100 miles biking since Jan 1 this year, and a bunch more walking..... we do a 3 mile bike/run weather permitting.

My fitness coach insists that I work out with her on a regular daily basis.... Without the daily run we do, and the walking, she's a bundle of energy.... so she is my motivator to get off my butt and work out.

come on...lets run...

you paddle, I'll enjoy the scenery.... and letting my tail drag in the water..

yep... she's my fitness coach.... unrelentingly so.

Now I am motivated more than ever to keep trying.

The diet thing will be much harder.  I did just turn down a corn chip though.  Sometimes I eat just to be doing something.

Re: Do you exercise regularly? 2016/03/09 11:30:24 (permalink)
Hi,

I went from 285 to 245 in 6 months ... and then in the next year gained it all back ... and I will be starting it all up and going back down, and this time the goal is around 225, or less, so I can get back on the tennis court again ... I waddle too much at 245/250 and my playing weight used to be around 210 for my 6ft frame.

It's not difficult ... but the continuity is the issue ... I lost that amount, and then had some serious blood pressure and stress issues that did not help with sleep and rest and the weight went right on back up ... and now after the changes this weekend, it will be time to relax and get the weight under control again.

As an example, I was in bed yesterday all day from 1PM to about 8PM, then back to bed at 10 to get up at 5AM ... had what appeared to be a cold/flu ... that finally went away around 8PM with the stomach going all sick and crazy for that whole time, but I stayed in bed! Hopefully it will be easier as time goes by!

Here's a fuzzy snap taken by the foster on the day I adopted Ollie (the Italian Greyhuahua) 4 years ago. My other dog, Sparky, is a poodle/jack russell.

Edit: Here's a very effective weight loss tip that I highly recommend you DO NOT follow: spend a year going through a divorce. I was just starting to get my weight back up in that photo. I wasn't eating or sleeping and got down to 130 lbs. That's when I took the ring off and fired my ex. Took me 6 months to get back up to 140.

Even four-five times 45 minute intense training doesn't cut your weight, if you're not carefull with what you eat, because intensive training does not burn fat. More likely it leads to excessive meals after the sessions.
AFAIK, the most effective exercises for losing weight are long walks/slow jogging with pulse below 120. When pulse goes over 120 approx. you start using short term energy instead of your bodys restored resources.  But that takes time, three times a week at least one hour. Blaah.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

That's what I'm hoping dog walks will address in the long run (walk?).  There is no doubt that my cardio health has improved tremendously though.  And blood chemistry has also improved by a large margin.

I forget to mention earlier that my "studio" is on the lower level, so add ~20 round trips down/up the stairs to my regimen

Apparently the "fat burning zone" is a myth:

http://www.active.com/tri...f-the-fat-burning-zone

I have to say from my experience I agree - the most impressive weight loss I ever made was by doing intensive interval training. I would get on the elliptical, do a 3 minute warm up and then do 20 minutes of 60 second flat out followed by 30 seconds of rest. During the 60 seconds I would push myself to the absolute limit (to the point where the last 10 seconds felt like the longest 10 seconds of my life). I was quite fit to start with but had gained a few extra pounds. Not recommended if you have a weak heart, and it's best to start off with a gentler ratio (e.g. 30 seconds flat out then 60 seconds rest), but I lost a solid 10lbs in a month. And that was despite having gained muscle mass (especially in the legs).

The only problem with intense interval workouts is that they can make you look forward to the gym a little less - I got to the point where I really had to force myself to go because it was just 20 minutes of what felt like hell. I have to say though, you feel absolutely amazing later :)

Here's another link which explains the fat burning myth very well and also talks about the "afterburn effect" - the fact that the body continues to burn calories long after an intense workout, something which doesn't happen after a low intensity workout.

It is virtually impossible to exercise away excessive food intake. The exact numbers depend on primarily your weight, but as a rough estimate you will use a bit over 500 calories by doing high level aerobic activity for one hour. At 3500 calories per pound of fat, you would need to do seven hours of exercise to lose a pound in a week. Or you could reduce your diet by 500 calories per day to get a similar result. That would be the equivalent of cutting out three beers or four apples per day (depending on which you think is healthier). Starvation is the key to losing weight. Exercise is helpful, in that it tends to keep the body from adapting to starvation, and resistance exercise that builds muscle is also useful in that muscle tissue has a much higher resting metabolism than fat.

I do 50 pushups every morning. I also mountain bike, ski and ww kayak and hike when I have time. My day job requires me to be on my feet most of the day along with keeping up with my little guy (sports etc.). My phone pedometer records 5 walking miles a day on average. I wish I had time to go to a gym but I would probably spend any new found time playing music.
