I always edit - record and set-up the mix in track view. I do however make my first basic automation moves in console view - because working with envelopes is such a pain that I only use them for final automation edits. It's much easier to see relative fader moves in console view and the aural - visual ques take on some meaning there.

Bob Oister I start out in Track View, to insert markers, apply fades and crossfades, general track cleaning and clip gain envelopes, and then I switch to Console View for track and bus volume adjustments, panning, eq and applying effects. Bob Same here.

JSGlen Can anyone confirm that the Console View uses more CPU? Good question... I never noticed a performance drop while in Console view...

I don't see any difference CPU wise Console vs Track View. I do most of my mixing in the Console view, I find it more convienient except when I need to move around in the time line, or do envelopes. Dan

I run dual monitors so have track view on one side, console view on the other. I use both, depending on what I'm doing at the time. I generally prefer to do the tweaks with the console view as it's good to have everything all in view, ready for tweaking as needed. Spaceduck, you said the strips were too wide for you? Is this with the narrow strips option turned on? If you don't know about it, there is a button somewhere to narrow the strips, and another one to remove the side bar on the left (can't remember what it's called). But if you can fit 16 strips in on a screen, sounds like it may already be on. I don't know how many I can fit though. Or you running widescreen?

bitflipper Console view is great for showing off how cool your DAW looks with dual monitors. I bring it up if I want to impress someone who knows nothing about DAWs. But for mixing? Nah. haha!!!! I think I just spit some of my beer on my "comnsole view" screen. I only bring it up to impress high rollers that stop by as well lol

I found the button (it's on the left side bar right below Tracks/Buses/Mains). Now I have 36 tracks on widescreen. I may have to start using this crazy console view after all; it's a lifesaver when working with FX bins. Man I'm gonna have to buy a 2nd monitor now. Why oh why did I have to read this thread

I started using Console View (along with track view) a couple of years ago. There are things that seem to be much more efficient in console view like copying effects using ctl-drag from one bin to another, and other tasks. I let track view occupy the top half of the screen and console the bottom. Using track folders, I organize my tracks into about 5 or 6 main folders, and open only one folder at a time so I can still see most or all of the project in track view. Like was mentioned earlier, I hide midi tracks in console view and use the condensed view so I can see everything. I have a high res monitor (I couldn't do this without a high res monitor). I have found this to be the most efficient for my work flow than using only track view - which I did up until a couple of years ago.

I use both as well. Mostly I live in the track view, but I switch back to console view when I'm routing buses, inputs, outputs, plugins. My "Perfect DAW" would actually allow full customization of the view, so I could have one view that covered everything for me. I grew up on consoles, and I've held onto 'virtual' consoles ever since migrating to a DAW. So my ideal view would actually be the console view with the WAV files scrolling vertically (which is basically the track view flipped over on it's side). But I've come to accept the 'horizontal' layout of track view, and I realize that the rest of the world likes it that way. It'd be nice to have some more options though.

Interesting to see the variations here. I typically record in track view, but, except for establishing envelopes and fades and such, mixing is done in console view. Really, it's a lot of back and forth. The REAL problem is finding time to do it!

I tend to use both, depending on what I'm doing at a particular time. I definitely use track view more often, but I like the console view for tweeking plug-ins and levels as it allows you to see everything and select this and that easily. Guess I still have that hardware mindset from the years of using analog gear.

I am not aware that ctl-drag of effects works better in CV than in TV. It seems to work equally well in both. I suppose that when you are in track view, and you have both the source and destination tracks open at the same time so you can see the Fx bin of both, you could ctl-drag easily. But because of the layout of track view, it seems that on projects with many tracks, you can't visually see as many fx bins in track view as in Console view (monitors are wider than tall). In console view I can see a ton of fx bins, where I can ctl-drag between any of them. However, this is more related to an individual's work flow. If it works for you in track view, great. I used to do everything in track view for years. When I started trying console view, I noticed there were things that were easier to do in console view. I have both open at the same time and use them both. Some things are easier in track view, some easier in console view - for me. to each his own.
