Does anyone shop regularly at Whole Foods?
I've been shopping in various NYC Whole Foods for years, and I almost always pay with my card. Just been having a look at my bank statements over the last couple of months and it appears that nearly every time I shopped there, there have been two charges made on my card for different amounts. Sometimes from two different Whole Foods locations. Now I don't think I have ever made two separate purchases there in one day (in fact I know I haven't) and certainly not at two different locations. Wondering if my card is being scammed, or if there is some weird reason why a WF purchase shows up as two separate amounts (I'm clutching at straws here). I guess I'll find out tomorrow when I call them, but anyway if you shop at WF in New York then it's worth looking at your statement.

Every week. I'll ask my wife to verify, as everything goes through her account.

Single transaction every time. Hopefully they'll have a logical explanation, though I can't figure out why they'd do that.

I'm usually regular when I occasionally shop there. LOL. I haven't noticed any extra charges. I'll certainly take a closer look. Maybe start using cash. Thanks for the heads-up.

Hmm I think something is definitely afoot. Of course the trouble is that I don't keep my grocery receipts (who does?), which would settle everything. This makes it tricky to find out which of the charges are genuine. I guess they would have to ascertain the exact times of each transaction and look at camera footage. Will provide updates.

This does look odd and I've never noticed it in my bill. However, if it's from two different locations, that shouldn't be too hard for them to track down (providing you know the date of transaction and the two locations).

Unless I pay cash, I save all my receipts (however my grocery receipts also contain what I paid on my card - in other words, I don't get two separate pieces of paper). YMMV!

Well it's been explained (sort of). What I wasn't taking into account is that any card purchases made at the weekend won't get posted on my statement until Monday. So If I shop at Whole Foods on Monday as well, it'll appear that multiple charges have been made on that day. Going back through my statements from the first instance of this I could find (from the earliest statement I can access online), it appears that the vast majority of these multiple charges have been made on Mondays. And also discounting multiple charges on Tuesdays on weeks in which the Monday was a Federal holiday, I can only find 4 other instances of double charges, and these occurred on Tues, Wed and Fri. They all happened over a year ago and I'm not sure I have the inclination to investigate whether or not I made two trips to Whole Foods on those days. It's unlikely because my schedule only allows for one shopping trip a day, but I'm not confident about it enough to risk sitting in a Whole Foods security office seeing camera footage of myself making two trips (provided they even have footage going back that far). Don't know why the weekend thing didn't occur to me - I guess I never really pay that much attention to dates when I skim over my checking account. It's funny but I go over my business account with a fine tooth comb every week, but my checking account not so much. I've even stopped paying attention to things like utility bills, phone, internet etc. This is what happens when bills come out of your account automatically, you get complacent....

I do. Not intentionally though. I just throw them in one of the bags and use the same bags for as long as they last. I always have a few months worth of receipts.

Unless you are using a very unusual credit account, the store will not let you walk out the door until your account has been debited or a hold has been accepted. That will leave a transaction date on the credit card company server. Your credit card company should be able to provide you with two dates for each single transaction: one the date of the transaction, and the second the date of the posting. If you are trying to audit a charge, both are very useful. My statements always include both unless I download them from the website, in which case only the posted date is listed. That is I suspect because the kind of financial software that gets used for downloads (Quicken et al) can't handle two dates for one transaction.

I went through my fridge, pantry, and anything that holds food and found ALL of it contained sugar as the 2nd or 3rd ingredient. I was shocked by this. I had no idea. Food you wouldn't imagine having sugar like spaghetti sauce. I could go on and on with this list but my point being NO WONDER I Am DIABETIC!

One of the reasons why I try to not buy prepared/processed food. Sugar is only one major offender - try not to exceed the recommended daily sodium intake and you'll be pulling your hair before you're even done with your breakfast. As much as possible, I try to follow this very simple rule (I borrow the phrasing) : Shop the perimeter of the store. That’s where all the fresh foods are. The less you find yourself in the central aisles of the grocery store, the healthier your shopping trip will be. Make it a habit — work the perimeter of the store for the bulk of your groceries, then dip into the aisles for staples that you know you need.

Hi, Over here in Vancouver, the nearest thing is Trader Joe's. They are not great, but are ok, and sometimes I wonder if there is a difference between them and Fred Meyer's across the street! No issues on the debit card, but now you got me worried and I will look just in case!

Whole Foods is pretty good in that most of their staples are way more healthier than the staples you find in other supermarkets. Things like cereal...it's possible to get a really tasty breakfast cereal at Whole Foods which only has 6-8g of sugar per serving as opposed to the 10-15g you find in similar cereals from companies like Kellogg's etc. The same goes for things like pasta sauce and canned goods. Having said that, recently the girlfriend has persuaded me to get back into making all my meals from scratch. I used to do it, but over the last couple of years have gotten into the very lazy (and expensive) habit of eating from Whole Food's $8.99/lb salad bar. It really sucked - I was paying upwards of $10/meal for food that wasn't particularly fresh, that was prepared by God knows who, and which was probably covered in germs (those sneeze guards aren't 100% effective). Recently we've been making our own meals along with a big tasty salad every night, and I've been saving a fortune. I also feel a lot better, and enjoy meals far more. I'll never eat another Whole Foods salad again.

Have you crossed the street to find out? LOL I like TJ's for some stuff: salads, cheeses, fruit & veggies. They also have some good frozen meals. Their prices are generally lower than Whole Foods, but they don't have the selection that WF does. Do some comparison shopping figure out which one is more to your liking. Whole Foods has gjetost(Norwegian goat cheese), but it's pretty expensive. So, they have things that the others don't. TJ's has a nice bruschetta sauce that cost around $3. I've tried others that don't taste as good and cost $7-8.

Trader Joe's is our other stop on grocery day. As Jan says, their prices are a bit lower - that's where I buy cottage cheese, nuts, yogurt, a few gallons of water, etc. Saves us a couple of dollars. My wife likes their prepared salads more than Whole Foods', so she always grabs a few of those. By the way, if anyone thinks Whole Foods is expensive... I still remember that one time where we went to that place called Sprouts (farmer market). Now that takes the palm...

The nearest thing Pedro? There are a few Whole Foods markets up here just a mile or two on the other side of the river. There are also a lot of New Seasons grocery stores on both sides of the river that are similar.

I''ve lost most of my movie appreciation and reviews because I can't make it to the theaters at night ... and you are telling me that there are plenty of those stores ... good for them! There has been some interesting research (and a lot of ill-informed opinion) lately about sugar metabolism. I suspect that when the smoke clears it will likely be similar to the situation with sodium. Some people are sodium sensitive and a substantial amount will cause their blood pressure to rise. Others can tolerate larger amounts of salt and not have any noticeable adverse effect. The adverse effect on people with heart failure is much more dramatic. As a public health measure advising low salt makes sense. You will definitely benefit a small percentage of the population by targeting the entire population. But you can be nearly certain that most of the population is not getting much if any benefit. I have not been able to find any reference for the number needed to treat to prevent associated conditions with sodium restriction in an unselected population, but I expect it is pretty large. Still if you have the time to read labels and can afford specialist foods there is a chance you can do yourself some good.

I used to LOVE salt - the saltier the better. Then I started taking better care of myself and reading label - and that's when I realized just how much there was in everything... Only a 10th of your intake comes from the shaker. An entry consisting of a bowl of soup w/ 2 or 3 crackers and a tiny bit of butter and you've exceeded your suggested daily intake. And I don't know about you, but I'm a big guy and I need a whole lot more than soup and crackers for my meal... Incidentally, I remember that, at my parents when we'd have soup like Campbell's or such, we'd actually ADD salt to it. By the way - if you can't cook your own, don't trust the low sodium labels. The aforementioned Campbell has been sued over that. The good thing is that when you start reducing your intake, you quickly recover a proper sense of taste and it doesn't take 10th as much.

I have low blood pressure so I don't worry too much about salt. I figure, I don't eat any big brand/processed crap, and I don't put it on anything I make myself (except some in the water to cook my quinoa flakes in the morning). My only vice at the minute is Marmite which is quite salty, although I'm sure the B vitamins offer the salt in the health stakes.

That pretty much takes care of it. Last summer in NY, my wife had an issue w/ pressure in her inner ear causing vertigo - which, as you guess, can be quite problem if you're singing upside down suspended by a wire. To reduce pressure to a minimum, they put her on a low sodium diet - not just healthy low, but LOW. I'm used to eating healthy, but figuring out a way to go that much below the recommended intake and staying there for a while proved to be almost a full time job.

TJ's is fine ... but there are times when I look at some of that garbanzo gob ... and go ... yukky! I keep trying to figure out if the bananas from TJ's go dark faster than the ones at Fred Meyer, and right now it's a dead heat ... they about the same. Or see when the tomatoes lose their coloring ... it's also a dead heat. Next test: Head of lettuce. Go home, and wash it in plain water (not bottled!). Let it sit on the fridge, and see which one goes bad first ... FM's or TJ's. This is fun! I keep wondering how different their low fat ranch, or low fat nonexistent honey mustard dressing really is! Ohhh ... sorry ... I forgot my lunacy pill this morning!
