From what I've read (on the internet, so it must be true! ) it's been Mangini's job all along.  Big shoes to fill with Portnoy's departure.

While I've enjoyed DT over the years, I'm torn on this one.  Could Dream Theater replace one great drummer with another great drummer and go on to make interesting, brain twisting music?  Sure.  Should they?  That's another question.  It's kind of like considering what would have happened if Mick Jagger left the Stones and they tried to replace him.  They could do it, but should they?

The Who did some excellent stuff after the Keith Moon's untimely departure.  At the same time, I wished that they had just renamed the band because it was never the same.  (Who fans can form a lynch mob later when they wake up.)

On the other hand, we could have two Dream Theaters in the same way that we had two Foghats.  Ok.  I'm not saying that worked out well, but it's still a precedent.

Oh.  And this post is still 20% - 40% shorter than if it were written by a certain ****pit.

    it's only the drummer....LOL

the choice will influence how things go, if (as expected) it's mike mangini then you can expect the prog quotient to increase, whereas if they go for someone from a metal background (roddy, minneman) then you can expect that part of the sound to be more pervasive...

James, I agreed with you up until the 84th blah.  I must take exception with this blah for trivial and nonsensical reasons that illustrate only my own complete and total ignorance as well as my outrageous inability to comprehend your post.  How dare you, sir!  I challenge you to take this upstairs!

First, however, I must create a new screen name with which to do battle.  Give me a few days to think of a good one.  Ok.  I'll settle for an insignificant name.  By that time, of course, my incessent ranting will be even less relevant than it is today, thus increasing the liklihood that I and my incomprehensible argument will be ignored in a humiliating manner.  Ha!

    where mike portnoy's been:

    http://guitarinternationa...standing-in-his-field/

making and album with steve morse

Steve Morse: Yeah I can tell you, all they can do is get mad at me. [Laughs] I’m recording with a really good lineup of people and we just finished arranging the songs. There’s myself, Dave Larue, Mike Portnoy on drums and Neal Morse from Spock’s Beard, well formerly of Spock’s Beard. He’s done a lot of things with Portnoy, the latest thing was Transatlantic. So they’ve done a lot of Prog type albums.

Then, our vocalist is Casey McPherson, who’s in a band called Alpha Rev and was in another band Endochine. He’s like the young guy in the band, with a great voice and a great songwriter. So we’re meeting in this place in the middle of all our different influences and writing stuff together.

This is really enjoyable stuff Mark, thanks for the link! I have to admit I'm a bit green where DT are concerned. I have 'Scenes from a Memory' but I suspect that wasn't a great place to start - any recommendations?

But I enjoy Kevin Moore's stuff post-DT stuff a lot, especially OSI.

I think that's why I didn't go any further than the one CD. His voice seems a bit 'wimpy' over that powerful music.

And, for full disclosure, I'd want someone who actually can sing - not a replacement who sounds like he's puking into the mic (i.e., "Cookie Monster" vocals).  CAN'T STAND THAT!!!

    hey James
all the albums are good, the last few are a lot heavier, for your tastes 'falling into infinity' is the least heavy, personally 'scenes' is my fave! but 'images and words' is the classic album...

Since Funeral for a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding used to be my favorite Elton John song/s when I was young I really like Scenes as well (I used to bug the crap out of the DJ to play it and they hated to since it was so long).

I love their version of Perfect Strangers on that as well.

That was so cool.  I like what Mike said afterward that now he feels he has a purpose.  I would love to be in his shoes except I don't play drums and his shoe size is smaller than mine, plus he's wearing them.

Man Craig, is there anything you post that I don't agree with? Scary. LOL! I&W was what sold me on DT. I felt they had the perfect mix of prog, hooks and musicianship on that album...and to me, James actually sounded quite good. From there, though I love musically stimulating albums, I felt they substituted hooks for wankage with less of what drew me to them in the first place.

James started getting rough because his voice has been toast. The poor guy has had a tough time over the years but refuses to give up. He's actually a bad singer now because his voice just can't handle it. He pushed it too much. The guy that would be the perfect singer in my opinion, would be Tony Harnell from TNT, remember him? He'd be the only guy I'd consider because he sounds a bit like James did in his prime...but better in my opinion.

I really think this band had the best of all worlds at one time. But they felt the need to change directions and hey, who am I to say anthing...they have remained successful and are definitely legends. I always would tell people...
