Thanks Cian... this is a rough mix of what I had in mind for your song...
kind of a Level 42 groove...
Besides the bass, I also added a little guitar part about half way...

Ohh Frank this does sound super funky, takes the song to a different place, infact, initially I had wanted to have the song with a more chilled groove kind of soul rnb playin in convertible drivin in the sun, this certainly brings it closer to this.

The only thing Im worried about there is that it might become more top heavy because the bass aint a consistent drone now and its moving, but it would be a shame not to use this.

I would love to know what other people think of this difference on the forum (and dont say you like it just cos frank done it!!!)

With added bass

My version
Cian

I can hear the difference in fidelity between your mix and mine, that was done using an mp3...

I'll clean up the bass track, make a few changes, and send you a better mix using your wav file...

again, very cool song Cian...

Cian: Excellent song, vocals, lyrics, hook, everthing. My only crit is something with the kick just seems to be masking with the bass. Like it needs more identity in the lower end. Like for example...where the bass low end is....that's where I'd accentuate the kick and I'd thin out the sub lows on the bass guitar. I think we just need a little more kick "oomph" so to speak. I listened to both mixes and felt the same about both of them...something just sounds strange with that kick to me....but everything else is stellar and I'd not change anything else.

Subjective of course, as the tune is fine as is with either of the 2 mixes. I just keep on hearing a kick with a bit more 50-60Hz and less bass guitar sub low "oooom" if that makes any sense? Great tune...hook stuck in my head for life...so it's a winner! :)

hey whack very cool, again you show your ability to write a killer 80s influenced tune, but we've on from u2 to something kinda culture club meets level 42 meets michael jackson...which shouldn't work, but certainly does! mix sounds great, Frank's bass takes it to a new level. fantastic sir!

Yea Frank I could spot that mine was a little crisper and more defined.

Hi Danny, prob need a little carving by the sounds, maybe I cut a little to much lower frequency below the kick, did you find it on both tracks?

Thanks mgh, yes again another fusion track. I guess thats one for Frank, I do think his bass does give this something extra, I have asked him to do it again on a wav track.

Re:RnB/Pop Track - Drop Dead Gorgeous 2011/05/03 18:41:09 (permalink)
Hi Cian, yeah it seems to be the same on both. Like the kick drum is accentuating higher low end frequencies...like maybe in between 90Hz to 120Hz. I almost wasn't going to post my feelings on that because I can't really pinpoint it and didn't want to upset you. I'm not one that ever posts without info to help an issue I hear...but this one has me a bit stumped. I guess I'd need to load the song up in my mastering rig to really see what's going on here.

At the end of the day, what I'm saying is subjective and if it sounds good to you to where you're nothearing any issues, leave it as it is. My reason for stating it though is because I master stuff like this all the time and for the most part, it's always been the other way around. The kicks in this type of music have more of that "boom" sound than the bass guitar, if that makes sense? With yours, it seems to be the opposite...which isn't a bad thing man, honest....it was just different than what I've been used to hearing when working on tunes like this.

But make no mistake, all the rest of the tune is fantastic and I'd not change a thing. If you don't hear what I'm hearing, don't even worry about it. :) Sometimes though, we get so close to our material we miss the obvious and I was thinking maybe that may have been the case. Please keep in mind...it doesn't sound bad at all....just "different" than what I'm used to. No one else has made a mention of it, so chalk it up as me being a fruit-cake. LMAO! Awesome song Cian, honest. :)

Ok... here's my latest bass track with the changes we discussed... I used your wav file and rolled off the low-end a bit... I think the kick and bass sound a little better...

I like what Frank has put in, and all I would add is try to get a good compressor on it. The volume fluctuations are sort of out of control for a pop track like this.

I agree with James, it's an unfortunate occurrence in pop music but the genre is compression happy and I think the kick drum needs to be felt more than it is. Still it's a fun and funky song bro (gonna have to step my "pop R&B" game up)

This is a new mix with a more compressed bass track, and I also compressed Cian's original wav file slightly hopeing to bump the Kick a bit...
Thanks again for the help Cian, James and Tony... fun project

nat, much better...now we got that kick in a better place in my opinion. Still a bit boomy on the bass but this is the right direction in my opinion. Nicely done! :) Are you mixing with a sub by chance? If not, this could be why it's reacting the way it is on my end. I have a pretty nice rig set up here with tuned monitors etc...the bass still seems a little subby to me. Like I now hear the kick where it should be, but the bass has like a constant "ooom" sound if that makes sense? Definitely on the right path though. :)

Hey Danny, thanks for your input and ears, I have left frank look more at the mastering end, but I would agree that the kick prob needed a little more whack and I can certainly hear more of that in the latest version, Thanks Frank! He didnt have the easiest of tasks Id say, my wav didnt leave overly much headroom for him + I may have tweaked the bass and kick in my original mix.

Thanks Tony, Im glad you liked it cos for that type of music I would rate you one of the best on the forum at it and yea man, step that **** up, nothing like friendly competition!!! Im patiently awaiting your next "Happy" type/styled song.

Danny, thanks for the help...  I watched the excellent video tutorial on your website...... really outstanding, and enlightening...

Thanks again Cian for allowing me to play around with your really cool new tune... I'm still not completely satisified with my bass track so I may try something different...

This is really sounding more polished.  I love the funky bass....the whole thing feels tighter and glides.

I listened subjectively and not critically because my critical listening skills need some attention

I liked the second mix and could hear a marked improvement to an already great mix and song. The mix is tight and comes across plenty loud in my earbuds here at work. I actually had to run my computer volume almost all the way down.

Thanks Starise, can never be too loud in this competitive pop industry!

Yea, Tony's vocals would certainly suit those high bgvox on the chorus.

This is great. It’s very catchy and on several levels – the lyrics, the feel and the vocals. Very pro-sounding. There’s a BeeGee quality in the bvox – take that as a compliment please (I know it sounds like I am “dating” the sound but I don’t mean it that way – they have great voices). This is a fun tune with a positive, up vibe to it and it is very well done. I can see from the comments that it has gone through some changes – the end result is wonderful.

Well, I'll be whacked! Just thought the high vocal in the chorus was a tad-bit too loud compared to the other voices, though??

Sound fine, some other people like it also. I tell the forum but then.............maybe later.

Whacked, out!

Manny, no offense taken, I love the bee gees man! Thanks.

Fair point spacealf, I was pondering on that myself, but the chorus just needs that little lift after the relatively duller verses, I still aint entirely happy with how the choruses came out mind, but Ive been fooling round with it for so long that I cant bare to go back at it!
