Edirol PCR-800, ACT and Sonar X2?

I have been looking to buy a Roland A-800 but recently I found for a good price a used Roland PCR-800. Has anyone any experience with Sonar X2 and the PCR-800? I read somewhere that the ACT is better with the A-800 but can someone confirm that and give more details?

I use a PCR with X2. It's not my main control surface I have an MCU & XT for that as well as a BCF2000 and a MIDI section on my mixer but the PCR does everything I want it to whiile I'm at my keyboards. Don't know about comparisons with the A-Pro series but I see more problems mentioned on here with A-PRO in the title than I do PCR.

That might be because the A-PRO is more current/popular though. I certainly have no intention of upgrading anytime soon though. No need, the PCR works that much I do know.

How is the ACT integration? Is there play pause button? Do the faders work out of the box? Even on third party VSTs? I have an audio kore 1 and tried to map it and all the ACT config wasn't too fun.

Works pretty much out the box as long as the right map is loaded. Faders, knobs, buttons, transport etc, all works here. Great bit of kit. I use it to control Sonar when I'm at my keyboards, change map to control my synth (Sonic Cell), change back again to control Sonar. Simples.

Can I jump in with some questions on it as well?

Are you guys using the PCR on Win7?
Have you found a download for the 64bit Editor for it?

All I can find is XP and down and that the Editor wont be supported any longer.

I can program the Pads but thats about all I know how to get it to do on Win7.  Cant figure the rest out

    Hi Mike

This video on my youtube page may help. Although I'm using my ZED-R16 the PCR set up is almost identical. It just has the extra fader/knoband transport controls etc.

    The principle is the same.

As Chregg has said I'm sure the editor works okay although it's been a while since i used it. I tend to edit controls via the keyboard itself.

    Thanks Karl,

Dont know how I missed yours.

I did come across it though finally.  It squared me away setting up the PCR on the preset for it.
Sliders and Panning, etc...  all do as advertised
The only thing I couldnt figure out was how to do the L1-L4 to make it Play, Stop, Record...

Gonna spend a lot of time getting it burned into my eProm on all the other stuff though.

    Thanks for the link though

I don't own the PCR so I don't know if this is true. See my recent thread on A-Pro for reference (if you haven't).

Despite the limitations/inconveniences of A-Pro control surface plugin, A-800Pro is a great keyboard (especially the key action).

PCR needs firmware 1.05 for smooth knob control. if you're buying second hand or old stock you may want to check that.

I screwed up my PCR trying to update the firmware and Roland UK didn't want to repair even though I was happy to pay. They put me in touch with an engineer but he couldn't help.

Any PCR firmware gurus out there?

Did you use Roland's update SMF to transmit the p00001.mid file to the PCR?

Here is the procedure to use this application:

    1) Copy the file "updateSMF.exe" to your computer.
    2) Launch the application by double clicking on the appropriate icon.
    3) Click on the arrow by MIDI Out Device and select the MIDI output
    you wish to use.
    4) Click on Path and use the browse dialog box to locate the
Standard MIDI Files you have downloaded (they should be in a
directory by themselves) and click on OK.
    5) Click on Scan SMF, you should see a number of files appear
in the window immediately next to this button.
    6) Press SEND to begin transmitting the files. The application
will send all of the files sequentially.
    7) When the update is completed, press Exit.

Download SMF to do your update

    SMF

What happened after you went through this process? Does the controller work at all?

Hi Marcus, thanks for your post.

At first I used x2 (30bpm) to send the sysex update and it choked and I have an FFF message on the display when the underneath dip switch is set to the receive update position. The keyboard does not power up with the dip switch in the normal operation position.  I then tried the SMF player several times with no success.
If I hold down V-Link and L1 and power up with the dip switch in the receive update position
the display reads 1.04 (the factory shipped firmware).

Someone suggested trying to resend 1.04 but I haven't been able to locate a copy.

I am going to search my archives and see if I can find 1.04. I save everything. no promises though. I won't be home for a few days, but I will put it on my to do list the minute I get home on Friday.

resending 1.04 may not do the trick but it is worth a shot.

This is a helpful thread.  I read through it and realized that I have not checked my firmware version on my pcr800.  Guess what?  It was not 1.05, but 1.03.  So I am going to update the firmware tonight.

    Thanks for this thread!

    Bugger.

I just tried to update the firmware on my PCR800, and halfway through (when I hit the C3 button) the display switched to FFF. Not only can I not get rid of this, when I flick the switch (under the barcode) back into the 'normal' position, the PCR won't even switch on.

    Any ideas?

Sorry to derail, just hoping someone else familiar with the PCR800 might know what to do.

Also make sure you haven't touched the other switch under the barcode, that'll stop a power up.

if you get it sorted let me know. I'm in the same position. If your keyboard is less than 3 years old Roland will fix it but I don't suppose it will be if you are on 1.03. Mine was just over 3 years old and they didn't want to know and weren't helpful.

I won't be buying another Roland keyboard as a result.

Cheers Karl, I didn't even get as far as sending the update. After I turned the unit on as directed with the switch in the 'reset' position, I followed the bumph on which buttons to press on the unit:

    2. Use a USB cable to connect the PCR to your PC, and set the PCR's power switch to the USB position.
    3. When the PCR's display indicates 103, press the [ENTER] button.
    4. When the PCR's display indicates "ERAS," press the [DYNAMIC MAPPING] button.
    5. When the PCR's display indicates "SURE," press the [C3] button.

I got the 'ERAS' message in the window but when I pressed the Dynamic Mapping button, that's when I got the 'FFF' error.

And yup, I have been using the correct switch mate.

The connection via the USB is definitely still working because whenever I have the switch in the 'Update' position, the unit fires up (with the FFF message); it's only with the switch in the normal position that it's completely dead. I also double-checked in X2 and it 'sees' the PCR in update mode, but not in normal mode.

    Hi Martin

I've tried posting this problem on the Roland forums HERE, and I've also just stumped up £11 on JustAnswer to see if an 'expert' knows how to sort it out.

I'll let you know if I get an answer that actually solves this.

I also double-checked in X2 and it 'sees' the PCR in update mode, but not in normal mode.

Have you tried sending the sysex file from X2 or is the unit itself locked up completely? (And if that works I'm only a tenner. )

    Woo-hoo!!

I'm not quite sure how, but I think I've cracked it. And thanks for the advice Karl

Martin, if it helps, here's what I did:
    1. Make sure the switch is in the 'update' position on the underside of the PCR800
    2. Turn the PCR on while holding down the Enter button, this seems to clear the FFF error message and puts you back where you were before it 'crashed' - in my case, the message showing was ERAS
    3. Carry on the installation from that point in the process (i.e. in my case it was to press the Dynamic Mapping button)
    4. Run UpdSMF, select your PCR, navigate to the downloaded p00001.mid file and hit Scan SMF:

    5. Once you get the message to tell you the transfer is complete:

... follow the instructions to switch off the PCR, put the switch back and then perform a factory reset.

A bit of a long shot..........Have you tried to resend it?

Also make sure you haven't touched the other switch under the barcode, that'll stop a power up.

    Steve

if you get it sorted let me know. I'm in the same position. If your keyboard is less than 3 years old Roland will fix it but I don't suppose it will be if you are on 1.03. Mine was just over 3 years old and they didn't want to know and weren't helpful.

I won't be buying another Roland keyboard as a result.

    Hi Martin

I've tried posting this problem on the Roland forums HERE, and I've also just stumped up £11 on JustAnswer to see if an 'expert' knows how to sort it out.

I'll let you know if I get an answer that actually solves this.

So sorry to here this.  I have not tried to update yet, and given two of you having what looks like the same problem updating the firmware, I think I am going to live with vers 1.03 for a while.

Please keep us updated as to any remedy you find.

We must have posted at the same time.  Are you saying that you now have v.1.05 working?
